Be it known thatI, FRANK B. YIN LING,
a citizen of theUnited States, and resident of Hamilton, Butler county, State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tile-Presses, of which the following i a specification.
y The present invention relates to improvements in tile presses.
Such presses are required to operate upon clay or other suitable material in a powdered or fine granular form, which materialhas a tendency to en trap the air within itself when pressure is applied, resulting frequently in wind blown or laminated tile, owing to the contained air preventing close union of the particles of clay. It is necessary that the finished tile be firm and strong and this can only be accomplished by subjecting the material to great pressure and insuring that the air contained in the clay in its J normal loose conditionis permitted to escape before the pressing operation is completed. As the dies by which the pressing is effected must fit rather snugly within the mold case, r
they have a tendency to prevent the escape of airas freely as wouldbe the case if, the dies were only loosely fitted Within the mold. The tile must, of course, be uniform throughout, whichrequires that the material be evenly disposed in the mold and not unto either the top or bottom dies and heat must be supplied around the die and mold cavity to keep the damp clay from unduly adhering to the dies.
A press which meets all of the require ments above noted is provided by the present invention which will be described in connection with the embodiment thereofiillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a side elevation;

Figs. f to 9 illustrate the several relative positions which the essential parts of the machine occupy at different times in each cycle of operation. In these figures several of the parts are shown conventionally as. the views are more or less diagrammatic;

Fig. 11 is a more or less diagrammatic view illustrating the means preferably employed for limiting downward mdvement of the lower die at one step of the cycle of op eration produced by each rotation of the power shaft when it is required that the tile be pressed near the top of the mold or at an intermediate place between the top and bottom of the mold case.
In some of its features as regards ar- E, a pitman F connecting the die toggle with a crank onthe power shaft B, a clay reservoir or hopper G and a reciprocating mold charging device adapted to be reciprocated by suitable cam mechanism actuated by the shaft B to convey a charge from the hopper G to the mold casing.
The support H for the lower die D is carried by slides I fitted in suitable guides on the framework A; and the shaft K constituting the pivotal support for the upper member of the toggle I1 is mounted in bearings in these slides I. The bearing portions of the shaft are positioned eccentrically to the intermediate body section and to one end of the shaft is suitably secured a crank M which is connected by a rod m with one arm of a bell crank M mounted on the frame of the machine and having its other arm provided with a roller m with which a cam M? on the power shaft B cooperates, whereby the eccentric, toggle supporting, shaft will be rocked in its bearings during each rotation of the shaft B. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated the crank M is provided with a sleeve that surrounds the shaft cranks, M, M, and thereby control the amount of second pressure adj ustmentof the toggle L produced by rockin the shaft K.
The pitman F is provide on its lower face with a cam .plate F that is adapted to cooperate with a roller F mounted in the main frame to effect simultaneous vertical movement of both of the dies, for ejecting the tile from the mold. The capacity of the mold or the quantity of material it can re eeive is regulated by stop S and hand-wheels S and screws S.
Clay is suitably supplied to the hopper or receptacle G and a quantity thereof suffieie l; to form a tile or number of tiles to be produced. at each complete operation of the machine is periodically transferred from the hopperto the mold casing by a reciprocating charging device N. It will be understood that with a given adjustment of the parts of the toggle mechanism the ultimate travel of the die plates toward each other is the same, thus producing tile of uniform thickness; but
the density is regulated by the amount of clay in the mold. The charging device comprises a rectangular shapedframe and a rearwardly extendmg plate or cut off member N, which prevents escape of imiterial from the hopper when the tubular section of the charging device is out of alinement with the opening in the bottom of said hopper. The charging device is provided at each side with a rearwardly extending rod or link a, the rear ends of which rods are connected by a crossbar n and are adapted to be engaged by a pair ofarms n mounted to rock about a common axis in the frame of the machine and one of which has at one end an upwardly extending arm n which at its outer end is provided with a roller a? cooperating with a earn 1}? on the main power shaft B.
By the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated herein the charge of clay within the mold box or casi 11g is. subjected to two distinct compressing actions by a single rotation of the main power shaft, the second ofsaid compressing actions being materially stronger or heavier than the first. During the interval between said suceessive conipressions the charge is relieved from pressure of the dies so that the air entrapped in the mold mayfreely escape. The niranner in which these several operations are effected will be clear from a consideration of the: drawings, particularly of Figs. 4 to 9.

This final, heavier, compression completes the formation of the tiles and as the toggle is again broken by the continued leftward movement of the pitman, both .of the dies are carried upward or into the positions shown in Fig. 4 with the completed tile in the path of the ejector. connected to the charging device N.
To adapt the machine for making tile of? different size and thickness the mold box or casing and the faces of the die may be provided with suitable liners or facing plates and alsomeans are provided for positively varying the relation of or distance separating the dies. by means of a suitable wrench for example, the eccentric bushin T can be adjusted as required for determining the thickness of the tile and the parts secured in such and 'usted osition by again tightening the olts V Referring to Figs. 2 and 10 it will be seen that if the eccentric bushing T is rotated so that the section thereof of maximum thickness is above the shaft K,- the toggle will be bodily adjusted vertically relative to the axis of said shaft and thereby the relation of the upper die to the lower die varied so that the machine will press a tile of different thickness from that which will be produced with the parts in relation shown in Fig. 10. The eccentric bushing T is made in two sections, each comprising a cylindrical member having at its outer end a toothed segment T.
As indicated in Fig. 11, positive stops may be provided for limiting downward movement of the upper die and in such event the lower die will be caused to move above the position which it would occupy during the. first pressing operation, as previously described, in order to effect such pressure. As the dies are separated at the completion of such first pressure, means are provided for limiting downward movement of the lower die, said means, as shown in Fig. 11, comprising a longitudinally extensible latch R pivoted on a shaft R mounted in bearings on the frame of the machine, and adapted to be moved to and from a position beneath a shoulder on the lower die. The shaft R is provided with an arm R which is connected by a link R with one arm of a bell crank R the other arm of which has a roller extending into the path of a suitable cam R actuated by the main power shaft. As the shaft rotates the cam R will actuate the bell crank R and rock shaft R to move the latchR to and from position to limit downward movement of the lower die. While the dies are separated and the eccentric toggle supporting shaft is being adjusted the tile will not be subjected to pressure from either of the dies and the air contained therein can therefore freely escape. The second or repress movement first lowers the top die, as far as permitted by the stops thereof, and then raises the lower die. At this time the cam F contacting with the roller- F begins the ejecting movement of the lower die. By the arrangement illustrated in F ig.-11, it will be seen that the travel'of the upper die will be stopped and the lower die raised to effect the first pressure and the lower die held within a fraction of aninch of the clay while the latter is relieved from the pressure of the upper die and the distance between the dies is varied for the second pressure. This results in the pressing of the tile near the top of the mold cavity and as the eompletedtile is required to travel a.
shorter distance in being ejected from the mold than in the arrangement first described the corners of the tile are not so liable to be damaged as it is forced upward. This arrangement also provides for pressing the charge of clay first from the top, then from the bottom, then pressing both the top and bottom and finally applylng pressure to the bottom as the tile is ejected.
It will be evident that the second re press movement or compressing action might be obtained by means specificallydifferent from those illustrated and described.
The press herein described is adapted for making various classes of architectural tile, such aswall, mantel or floor tile. This tile varies in size from 9 inches in length or width by inch to g inch in thickness, to inch square by -1- inch thick. Such tile are made in many different conditions of clay varying from an ordinary native clay to fine English china clay in combination with flint and stone or other material necessary to produce a tile meeting the desired requirements. Such tile must, of course, be true to size as determined, within small toler ances, and this necessitates that the press be of such character that the dies come together within a predetermined distance, regardless of the varying quantity or temper of the clay and that the dies fit rather snu lv within the mold case. The conditions, therefore, under which such presses must work and the material to be acted upon differ greatl from those which are present in the m-anu acture of brick and for these reasons presses having many parts generally similar to those hereinbefore described, althoughadapted to manufacturing bricks, are not capable of satisfactory use in pressing tile.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is, l
1. In a tile press, the combination of upper and lower dies, an eccentric shaft, a sinle to le havin its members res )ectively 235 b connected to one of the dies and to said shaft, means for extending and breaking the toggle to operate the dies twice during each cycle of operation, and means for automatically turning the eccentric shaft to vary the relation'between the toggle actuated die and the other die between the successive pressing movements of the dies occurring during each cycle of operation, for the purpose described. g
2. In a tile press, the combination of upper and lower dies, a single toggle having its lower end connected with the upper die, means for extending and breaking the toggle to shift the upper die to and from operative relation to the lower die twice during each cycle of o eration, and means for automatically varying the distance between the upper die and upper axis of the toggle between the successive pressing actions-occurring during each cycle of operatlon independent of that due to movement of the toggle, for the purpose described.
3. In a tile press, the combination of a support for the lower die, a power shaft,
means connecting the shaft and toggle and adapted to extend and break the toggle twice during each rotation of the shaft, means for effecting simultaneous vertical movement of the two dies, and means for varying the relation of the toggle to the bars or rods connecting it with the lower die between the successive pressing operations imparted to the toggle during each rotation of the shaft, whereby the second of said pressing operations will be stronger than the first.

I11 a tile press, the combination of an upper die, a lower die,bars or rods attached to opposite sides of and extending upward from the support for said die, an eccentric shaft journaled in hearings in said bars, a togglehaving one member connected with the upper die and its other member engaging said eccentric shaft, a power shaft, means connecting the power shaft and toggle and adapted to extend and break the toggle twice during each rotation of the shaft, means for effecting simultaneous vertical movement of the two dies, and means actuated by the power shaft for imparting rotary movement to said eccentric shaft between the successive pressing operations imparted to the toggle during each rotation of the power shaft, for the purpose described.
5. In a tile press, the combination of an upper die, a lower die, bars or rods attached to opposite sides of and extending upward fromthe support for the lower die, a toggle having one member connected to said bars and its other member connected to the upper die, a power shaft, a pitman connecting the toggle with means on the power shaft adapted to reciprocate the pitman to extend and break the toggle twice during each rotation of the shaft, means cooperating with the pitman for effecting simultaneous vertical movement of both dies, and means for varying the relation of the toggle to the bars connecting it with the lower die between the two pressing operations imparted to the toggle during each rotation of the shaft, whereby the second of said pressing operations will be more powerful than the first.
6. In a tile press, the combination with upper and lower dies,- of bars or rods connected with one die and extending past the other die, a toggle having one member connected with the last said die and its other member connected with said bars, a ower shaft, connecting the pewer shat and toggle and adapted to extend and break the toggle twice during each rotation of the shaft, means for effecting simultaneous vertical movement of both dies, and means for varying the positions of the toggle and die connected therewith relative to the other die between the two pressing operations imparted to the toggle during each rotation of the shaft, for the purpose described. a
7. In a tile press, the combination of upper and lower dies, a single toggle for actuating one of said dies, means for extending and breaking the toggle to move the die connected therewith to and from pressing relation to the other die twice during each cycle of operation, and means for automaticallyv efiecting bodily I longitudinal movement of the togglebetween the successive pressing actions occurring during each cycle of operaj tion, for thepurpose described.. a a 8. In a tile press, the combination of upper and lower dies, an eccentric shaft, a toggle having one member fulcrumed about the eccentric portion of said shaft and its other member connected with one of the dies, means for extending and breaking the toggle to compress a charge of material between the dies twice during each cycle of operation, and means for automatically rocking the eccentric shaft between the successive pressing actions occurring during each cycle of operation, including an adjustable member adapted to alter the relation between the eccentric shaft and toggle when the parts are at rest whereby the intensity of the pressures obtained by the successive pressing operations will be varied.
23. In a tile press, the combination of upper and lower dies, an eccentric shaft, a toggle having one member fulcrumed about the eccentric portion of said shaft and its other member connected with one of the dies, a power shaft, means connecting the power shaft and toggle and adapted to extend and break the latter twice in each rotation of the shaft, an arm attached to the eccentric shaft, and means connecting said arm and the power shaft, whereby the eccentric shaft will beadjusted to vary the position of the toggle and connected die relative to the other die between the successive pressing operations occurring during each revolution of the power shaft, said means including an adjustable member whereby the intensity of the pressures exerted by said pressing operations may be varied.

In a tile press, the combination of a lower die, an upper die, a toggle for moving one of said dies toward and from the other, a power shaft, means connecting the shaft and toggle and adapted to extend and break the toggle twice during each rotation of the shaft, means for varying the relation of the toggle and die connected therewith to the other die in accordance with the thickness of the tile to be produced, and means for varying the relative intensity of the pressing actions.
25. In a tile press, the combination of upper and lower dies, an eccentric shaft, a toggle having one member fulcrumed about the eccentric portion of said shaft and its other member connected with one of the dies, means for extending and breaking the toggle to compress a charge of material between the dies twice during each cycle of operation, means for automatically rocking the eccentric shaft between the successive pressing operations occurring during each cycle of operation, adjustable means for varying the relative intensity of the pressures exerted by such successive operations, and an eccentric bushing arranged between the eccentric shaft and toggle and adjustable relative thereto to adapt the press to produce tile of different thickness.
