CLOSURE FOB DISGHARGE APERTUBES IN PACKAGES.
aser.
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known-that I, CHARLES L. Wnm, a citizen of the United States of America, re-
' siding at Port Huron, in the county of St.
Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in as salt, and it is the object of the invention to provide a simple form of closure for an aperture in said. package .which may be readily opened for discharging the contents. It is a further object to facilitate the pouring of the granular material by a construction of closure which when open directs the stream vertically downward and prevents a lateral overthrow. With these and other objects in view the invent1on comprises the '7 construction as hereinafter set forth.
' In the drawings:
Figure 1 isaperspective view of a box or carton provided with my improved form of det closure, shown in open position;
Fig. 2 is a cross section showing the closure 1n closed position;
Fig. 3 is a similar view in open position;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional perspective view through the closure and adjacent portions of the receptacle;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the receptacle showing the aperture therein with the closure removed; I I r Fig. 6 is a section illustrating the by the closure; and
Fi is-a perspective view of the closure A is thebox or receptacle having formed therein the discharge aperture B,'which is shown as arranged in the cover of the box near the periphery thereof. This aperture is preferably of substantially rectangular form being provided at one end with an inwardl projecting ton e ortion C separated y slits D om e. a jacent side escrtions. E-is the closure referably form of sheet-metal and of a su ntially U-shaped cross section, being provided with a flat to F having a projecting lip G at one end, an
dependin sides-H. The latter are of. triangular orm having curved or tal ends I and at the opposite ends Specification-of Letters Patent.
1 open the closure, by engagin the finger nail beneath the projecting lip' with the inner e' pivotal motion of g tongues projecting beyond theend of the top portion F. These wings H are also preferably provided with laterallydeflected flange ortions K at their lower ends, as shown m Fig. 7. The closure E is so proportloned that the sides H will fit within the aperture B, the tongues J beingfirst in serted and hooked under the cover at the ends of the slots D. The end of the top section F will lie over the tongue C and the opposite end having the outwardly-curved 111) G, as shown, will overlap the opposite end of the aperture B. To first engagethe closure the sides H which are slightly resilient are sprung inward enough to pass the laterally-deflected flanges K within the a erture, and upon releasing the pressure these sides will spring outward so that the flanges K will'form stops preventing disengagement of the sides.
With the construction as. described the top portion'G of the closure normally lies flat upon the cover of'the box overlapping the ends of the aperture B, and its sides fitting tightly against the sides of the aperture, thereby forming a tight fit. The friction is suflicient to hold the parts inthis position even where the box A is inverted. To
of the closure E the latter may be raised until the stops K prevent further movement. The material may then be poured from the box, 'in Fig. 6, the closure forming a. which revents the stream from shooting out as shown late y and compels a vertical downward mrgeme'nt. f h J y reason 0 t e projectin tongues on the closure and the tongue 0 on the box cover a pivotal engagement is secured without hen or stressing the parts.- The sides H may if desired he 10d ment of the closure and at the same time 7 slightly concaved, as indicated at L, so as to relieve from friction during openingimovemaintaining a, tight fit in closed and open positions.
What I claim as my invention is 1 1. The combination with a receptacle havof, ad acent the edge-oi said face, of a closure or said aperture pivotally enga ed thereof, said closure ing outwardly. adwstable to a deflector ing position, and means. ouard Patented June ll, tflll.
