To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER J. RoAoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county ofMiddlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Chisel-Handles, of which the following is a specification. i i a My'nvention relates to improvements in chisel handles, particularlyof the type having the blade separable from the handle,
and the object of my improvement is simplicity and economy. in construction and convenience and efiiciency in use, and-while primarily adapted. for use-with chisel blades it is understood may also be usedfor some other form ofblade. i

My improved chisel handle comprises a generally" cylindrical body portion 10,
which may have any desired form exteproper, and a handle extension 11 at the front end having. means for removably receiving the blade 12, andpreferably has at the rear end an enlarged head 13,and the i said structureis provided with a bore 14 tapered head 16 on the that extends from end to end thereof.
. The portionof the bore 14 in the extension 11 is in the form of a tapered socket 15 which is a fit for and suitable to receive a shank of the blade 12.

At the rear end of the handle structure the bore 14 is closed by a plug 18 made of some proper form of cushioning material, such as wood, fiber, or raw-hide, which preferably extends a short distance out: wardly of the enlarged head 13,- as shown at 19, to serve as a hammer head.
V The seat for the plug 18 comprises a taper form 20 at the inner end of appreciable length, a flat or annular portion 21 adjacent the junction of the enlarged head '13 and the handle proper 10, and a second tapered portion 22 within the enlarged head 13 and extending from the annular portion 21 to the extreme outer end, and the plug 18 is of suitable form to fit the seat as described. i
It will be noted that the form of the seat for the plug18 is such as to permit. the removal of the said plug'from the handle structure. .Such removal is facilitated by first removing the blade 12 from the handle structure and then inserting a tool or rod in the bore 14 whereby force may be applied to the plug 18 for drivingthe same from itsseat. t i t Some other form of seat may be provided that will permit of removal ofthe plug in themanner described, as for instance, the same may be made with a continuous taper, such as the tapered portion 20 of suitable length. i i a w The construction "described permits of having .an enlarged head 19 on the plug 18 and atthe same time having the plug extend well into thehandle body, and without undue enlargement of the said handle body 10.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the slot 17 is omitted and the means for re: moving the blade 12 is as follows:
It will be noted that the blade 12 is provided with a laterally extending shoulder 23 at the base of the tapered shank 16.
The inner end of the extension 11? in which the tapered socket 15 is provided is exteriorly provided with a screw thread 24. Engaged with the said screw thread 24 isa sleeve-like nut 25 having at the front end an inwardly directed, annular collar 26, which is positioned between the platform 23 and the opposed end of theextension 11?.
The shank extends beyond the socket 15 sufliciently to provide free space between the shoulder 23 and the end of the extension 11" as shown at 27 to house the collar 26 and permit a slight longitudinalmovement thereof.
Normally the nut 25 will be screwed on the. thread 2 1 so, that the collar portion 26 abuts with the end of the extension 11.

The sleeve 25 is threaded interiorly for the major part of the length, and at the front end portion is tapered as shown at 3'0; suitably to cooperate with the tapered or'conical end portion 29 of the jaws 31 so as to effect a clamping of the shank 16*.
That is to say, the bore 33 in the end portion 32 ofthe sleeve 25 is in the form of a cone, having a short and steep taper.
llprefer tohave the said end portion 32 extend beyond the jaws 31'so that the same will engage with the shoulder 23 so as to force the same away from the jaws 31 after the sleeve 25 has been moved away from theclamping positionin case the jaws may become set against the shank, thus operating afterthe manner of the collar 26;
The-extension 11 of the handle andthe sleevenut 25 cooperate as chuck members to engage and disengage the tool handle, andthe nut25 serves as a backing off nut to force the tool shank from the position of engagement with the jaws after the clamping pressure on the said shank has been releasedby the backing away of the conical portion 33 ofthe bore of the sleeve nut 25 from engagement with the tapered end portion 29 of the jaws 31 or extension 11*; The sleeve nut serving accordingly both as a chuclr'member and as a backing-off nut.
The plug 18 as shown has an axial bore 34 that is appreciably smaller in diameter than the inner end face of thetapereda head 16 ofthe, tool 12. A tool of suitable form or a rod may be inserted through the said bore-34 and engaged with the end face and will thus serve as a means for driving the tool 12 from the tapered socket 15.
I claim as my invention 1. A h'andlefor a chisel or similar tool comprising an elongated structure of tubular form, the body portion constituting the major portion of the length, being of suitable size and having a suitable exterior formation to serve as the handle propenand having an open bore, the end portions being each pro vided with a tapered socket, connecting with the said bore, and a plug of cushioning material being seated in one of the said sockets and having an axial bore, whereby atool may be. inserted through the said axial bore for removing a tool seated inthe other of the said sockets. 1 W

A handle for-a chiselbr similar tool comprising an elongated structure having a bore extending continuously therethrough, means for removably receiving a tool shank at one end of the said bore, the other end of the said bore being in the form of a seat, a cushioning plug fitting and engaged with the said seat, and the said seat comorising at the inner end an elongated tapered portion, suitable for serving as a holding portion, the outer end -of the saidseat being approximately cylindrical, suitably to serve as a ferrule in engagement with the said plug, and an annular step connecting the said tapered portion and ferrule, suitable for serving as a seat proper in engagement with the said plug. a 1
