RAIL-BOND.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 4, 1918.

ing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rail-Bonds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in rail bonds and is closely related to, and
covers a modification of the rail bond constituting the subject matter of my prior application filed May 3, 1916, Serial No. 95051.
In said application I have disclosed a rail bond as well as a process of producing the same, wherein the end or terminal of the conductor of the bond, which may be a bundle or group of wires or ribbons, is surrounded by a sleeve or terminal in such "a way that on one face of the bond, that is, the face which is designed to be secured to the rail, such ,as by an electric brazing process,"is exposed as far as the sleeve is concerned, thus permittin the individual strands, or the terminal end of the conductor itself to be brazed directly to the. rail. A. strip of brazing material is interposed between the rail and the exposed face of the conductor, the said strip in said application previously referred to, being at one end attached to the terminal'part'of the bond, and overlying the said face of the conductor which is exposed or not covered by the sleeve.
In said application the sleeve referred to becomes intimately 0r integrally attached to the terminal portion of the conductor when the bond is brazed or attached to the rail, in
which time the sleeve, in accordance with the disclosures in said application, is solidly brazed to the conductor by reason of the fact that there is interposed between the sleeve and conductor an intermediate or inner brazing sleeve which is employed for the purpose of intimately attaching or uniting the sleeve to the conductor. In said application the sleeve is non-intimately attached to the conductor (in the process of producing the bond) by a bulldozer, or by any other suitable device by which the sleeve, conductor is accomplished in such a manner as to leave one face of the conductor exposed so that it can be brazed directly to the rail without being in any manner held away from the rail by the terminal sleeve.
My invention may be briefly summarized as consisting in certain novel details of constructions and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be described in the specification andset forth in the appended claims. In the accompanying sheet of drawing, Figure 1 is a front view, Fig. 2- is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a cross sec tional view substantially along the line 33 of Fig. 1, showing one form of bond made in accordance with my invention; Fig. d is a face view, Fig. 5 is an edge or side view, and Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view alon the line 6-6 of Fig. i, showing a second form of bond made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 7 is a face View, Fig. 8 is a sectional view substantially along the line 8-8 of Fig. 7; Fig. 9 is a cross'sectional view substantially along the line 9-9 of Fig. 7, showing a third form of bond made in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 10 is a cross sectional view showing a brazing strip applied to the bond.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 3, 1O represents the conductor of a bond here shown as consisting of a group or bundle of wires. Applied to each end of the conductor 10 is a terminal sleeve 11 which is either brazed or welded to the conductor, the brazing or welding of the sleeve to the conductor and the flattening or shaping of the entire terminal end of the bond being preferably accomplished in the same operation 01- by the same stroke or strokes of the dies. The dies in which the brazing or welding is accomplished are so formed as to flatten the portion which is designed to be attached or brazed to the rail, and at the same time securely braze or weld the sleeve to such fiattened portion but where the conductor emerges from the sleeve or terminal the terminal rather loosely surrounds the conductor e. is not brazed. or welded to the conductor, so that the strands will not be cut or crushed at the point where they emerge from the sleeve. This sleeve is so formed that when it is applied to the conductor in the manner just explained, one face 10 of the conductor is exposed through the sleeve so that the said face of the conductor can be brazed directly to the rail by any suitable bonding apparatus such as one or two high'resistance heating electrodes'which are designed to be pressed against the reverse side 10 of the terminal, in other words, the side which is completely covered by the terminal sleeve 11.
The edge or side portions of the sleeve partially surrounding the flattened portion may terminate a short distance from the face 10, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3, or
such edges may come up flush with said face, or they may, if desired, slightly overlap the side edges of the face 10 of the conductor, but in any event, during the welding or brazing process by which the sleeve is applied or' attached to the conductor, the edges or edge portions of the sleeve will not project beyond the fiat face l0 or otherwise prevent the conductor being brazed directly to the rail.
In brazing this bond to the rail, as well as the bonds shown in the succeeding figures, a suitable strip of brazing material 12, see Fig. 10, will be employed, which strip may be placed between the face 10 of the bond and the rail just before the bond is brazed to the rail, or this strip or piece of brazing material may form a part of the bond, in which event it can consist of a strip or sleeve partially surrounding the terminal of the bond, and may be slipped onto the terminal, or attached thereto by any suitable means, such as by riveting.
In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 I have shown a conductor which in all material respects is like that first described, except the conductor here designated 15, is a ribbon conductor, that is, one wherein the strands are flat and are arranged face to face. The terminal sleeve here designated 16, is, as in the first described construction, welded or brazed to the terminal portion of the conductor in the process of making the bond and at the time the terminal end of the bond is shaped. At the point where the conductor emerges from the sleeve, the latter loosely but completely surrounds the conductor, but at other portions partially surrounds it so as to leave the flat exposed face of the conductor, here designated 15, adapted to be brazed directly to the rail.

minal portion, by brazing or welding, a terminal sleeve 21 which wholly and relatively loosely surrounds the strands at one point, and at other points is integrally or intimately attached to the conductor and partially surrounds the same, leaving the fiat exposed face 20 to be brazed directly to the rail in the manner previously explained. Here again, as well as in the preceding ligures, the edge portions of the sleeve which extend around the perimeter of the face 20 of the conductor may be flush with said face 20*, or if desired, they may slightly overlap it or terminate a short distance from the face 20, the latter being shown in the drawlugs.
As here shown, the rear face 20 of the terminal of the bond, in other words, the face which is designed to be engaged by the bonding electrode or electrodes which create the heat necessary to brazethe bond to the rail is completely covered by the terminal sleeve, but it is not essential that the sleeve extend from end to end of such rear face, but the complete covering of such face is deemed advisable to avoid the electrode or electrodes gouging or cutting the strands.
I do not desire therefore, to be confined to the exact details shown, but aim in my claims to cover all modifications which do not involve a departure from the spirit and scope of my invention. 1
Having thus'described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A .an article of manufacture a rail bond a apted to be attached to the adjoining ends of two rails, and comprising a conductor having a terminal part and a sleeve intimately attached to such terminal part, said sleeve having a portion which only artly surrounds said part of the conductor caving exposed through the sleeve one face of the conductor which is designed to be at- .attached to the conductor adjacent said terminal part.
