DISPLAY-CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1918.
Application filed April 12, 1917. Serial No. 161,610.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. Grrrns'rnoir, a citizen of the United States, residing at Red ing, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Display-Cabinet, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cabinets for the display of merchandise, and the main object is to provide a convenient and eflicient cabinet for the display of package seed, that is, seed sold in envelops or similar packages. A further object is to so construct such cabinet that it will hold also a stock of seed packages beside the smaller stock displayed; and to make such cabinet foldable for storing and shipping.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of either side of my improved cabinet set up for use. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the cabinet with its legs in folded position. Fig. 3 is a side view of the cabinet on a reduced scale and knocked down for shipping. Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line aa of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on the line b-o Fig. 2 with the legs in open position. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the main partitions in the displaying portion of the cabinet. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the smaller partitions inserted between the main partitions like Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals. 1 designates the horizontal main frame or body of the cabinet, which frame to save material has its inside made up of flat bars 2 and 3. In the four corners of the hollow underside of the frame are pivoted at 4 four legs 5, which may be folded into the cavity of the frame in the positions shown in Fig. 2. Each leg has its lower end provided with a cavity 6, in which when the leg is folded, engages a spring catch 7 which is secured to the frame at 8 and extends with its other end as a spring arm 9, which when the leg is set up holds it firmly against the vertical side or end portion of the frame. When the leg is to be folded said arm 9 is simply pressed upward until the leg can fold and be held folded by the catch 7.
Slidable upon the bars 3 are two oppositely arranged drawers 10 with pulls 11; and upon the bars are normally resting, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, two trays 12, each of which is divided into cells 13 by vertical fixed partitions 14 having vertical side grooves 15 for the edges 16 of thinner partitions 17 to be pushed or dropped down into. Said partitions 17 are preferably made of sheet metal and formed at the lower end with a horizontal portion 18. To bring the cells into vertical position as shown in Fig. 4, the trays 12 are raised with their adjacent edges or sides 12 inclined in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 4; and to hold them in said position, a wedge shaped strip 19 is placed between them and retained by having one or more catches 20 engaging under the adjacent bottom edges of the trays. In said strip or wedge 19 is fixed a sign board 21, upon the sides of which is painted or printed words to indicate the general contents of the tray, for instance Seeds; and in the various cells are placed in vertical positions packages containing seeds, the names of which are printed across the end of the package or envelop displayed above the cells, so that the merchant and customers may readily find the kind of seed wanted, as for instance, Carrots, Beets, Peas, Turnips, etc.
The stock of seed for some time not displayed may be kept in the drawers 10, and also on a large shelf 22, which has its edges supported in notches 23 in the legs 5. Said shelf also aids to make the cabinet stand firmly; and when .the cabinet is to be knocked down for shipping or storing, the wedge 19 isremoved from its place, the trays lowered to parallel position with the top of the frame and the latter closed by placing upon it the shelf 22 as a cover which is secured by screws 24, as shown in Fig. 3, where also the legs are shown folded and the cabinet ready for shipping. In Fig. 2 the diagonal dotted lines 19-21 indicate how during shipping the wedge 19 and sign board 21 may be placed in the space between the folded legs 5. To accomplish this more conveniently the wedge and the board may be made somewhat narrower than shown, or the downward rails of the frame may be made deeper than shown.
5 'frame and divided into pockets for holding goods to be partly exposed above the pockets, a wedge-shaped member interposed between the adjacent edges of the two trays to hold the trays inclined one of them away from each side of the Wedge.
2. The structure set forth in claim 1, in which the Wedge-shaped member is detachable to allow the tray to occupy a horizontal position in the frame.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
