BENJAMIN BECKER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
DOOR-OPENER.
7 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1918.
Application filed October 27, 1917. Serial No. 198,871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN BECKER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Openers, of which the following is a specification containinga full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to an improved device for opening doors located at a distance from the operator, whether he be situated upstairs, down-stairs, or on the same floor on which the door is located; and my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim found at the end of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved door-opener which shall be cheap, simple, reliable in operation, and which can be readily applied to doors already in use, as well as to new doors and the locks thereof.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a door and its lock, having my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of parts of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the door lock, and a portion of the door, having my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the spring-lever detached from the knob-shank.
The numeral 1 designates any common door, say the front door of an apartment, which is to be unlocked and opened by an operator who is in the apartment above; or it may be in an apartment on the floor below, or several floors above or below the door to be unlocked or opened.
The numeral 2 designates the shank of the door-knob 3, on the interior of the hall or room.
On this shank 2 I have mounted a lever 4 having an integral ring at its base, in which is formed a slot 5, in which projects a screw or pin 6 fixed in said shank, to limit the movement of said lever on said shank.
A suitable spring 7 is coiled around said shank, and has one end fixed to said screw 6 and its opposite end fixed to said lever, so
that the lever will be returned to its normal position by said spring after the bolt 8 has been withdrawn from its keeper 9 by the action of said lever.
The spring also holds the said lever yieldingly in its normal position, and so permits the said bolt 8 to be retracted by turning the said knob in the usual manner, without disturbing the position of said lever, which will remain in its normal position when said knob is turned by direct contact of the operators hand. A cord, chain, wire cable, or similar flexible member 10 has one of its ends attached to the free end of said lever 4, and is then run upwardly to the pulley 11 on the wall 12, and from thence to another pulley 13, and thence upstairs, or downstairs, or to whatever location it is desired to operate the door from, wherever that may be.
A suitable handle 14 is attached to the operating end of said flexible member 10.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood, without further descrip tion.
I do not limit myself to the exact form of the various parts shown in the drawing, nor do I limit myself to the size or proportions of the various parts of the mechanism, as it is apparent that the same may be changed by skilled mechanics within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
In a door-opening device, a rocking-lever having an integral ring at its base in which is a slot, a knob-shank on which said slotted ring is loosely mounted to rock, a pin or screw fixed in said shank and entering said slot of said ring, to limit the rocking movement of said lever on said shank; a spring coiled around said shank and having one of its ends fixed to said pin and its other end applied to said lever, and a suitable flexible member attached to the free end of said lever and extending to a distant point, whereby said shank may be turned from said point, to unlock the door.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- BENJAMIN BECKER.
Witnesses:
FRANons Hoovnn RosENBAUM, JOHN C. HIGDON.
