HARLEY H. LA VERCOMBE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
DIE FOR RE-EORMING REMVIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2f, i913.
IApplication filed April 25, 1917. Serial No. 164,347.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, HARLEY ll. LA VER- coMn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful ltmprovements in Dies for Reforming Beamers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a die for reforming reamers or the like whereby reamers which have been worn can be readily swaged to size without great trouble and with considerable regularity and accuracy..
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
rlhe drawing is a view in detail in end elevation of a pair of dies which embody the invention, the work on which they are employed being shown in section between them.
As herein indicated, a bed die 1 is adapted to span under the body 2 of a reamer and catch the oppositely disposed ribs or flutes 3 and 4 thereof, at one side on the working or under cut facet 6 and on the other side' on the supporting or beveled back 7. Arranged to coperate therewith is a punch die 8, that spans over the reamer and operates with one spur 9 on the undercut facet on one side and on the other side with a part 10 on the facet 6.
As a result, a heated undersized reamer or worm tool that is inserted in the die has its cutting ribs projected by the action of the die in swaging the root or body of the rib, beyond the required diameter of the finished tool so that it may be readily ground to form or arrangement of parts within the scope of the claims.
What I claim is 1. Means for reforming reamers, Huted tools and the like, comprising a bed die and a punch die correspondingly recessed to clear an inserted tool and provided with gripping facets on the margins of the recesses that conform substantially to the opposite sides of the cutting flute or rib of the tool between the root and cutting edge thereof, the pairs of opposing facets on one side of the recess being dressed reversely to the pair on the opposite side.
2. Means for reforming reamers, fluted tools and the like comprising a bed die having a gripping facet that is the obverse of one flank of the rib` of a tool and a punch die having a gripping facet opposing the bed die facet and dressed obversely to the other side or flank of the rib of the tool.
In testimony whereof l aiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HARLEY H. LA VERCOMBE.
