HENRY E. HUBBARD, 0F OAK PARK, ILLINOIS.
RESETTING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. HUBBARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Resetting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to registering and recording mechanism and has for its primary object the provision of means whereby a plurality of disks each bearing digits arranged in their natural sequence about the periphery thereof may be quickly and easily rotated to automatically return the disks to starting position regardless of the relative angular position of the corresponding digits on the disks.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent as it is better understood by reference to the following specification when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, illustrating the pre- Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4: 1 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a suitable frame or support adapted to provide journals for a rotatable shaft 2. A knurled head 3 at one end of the shaft 2 provides means for rotating the latter, although it is to be understood that where my invention is employed in connection with gangs of numbering machines the knurled head 3 may be replaced by a gear or other means for transmitting power to and rotating the shaft. Loosely mounted on the shaft 2 and in the present instance held against lateral movement by washers 4 are a plurality of disks 5 each bearing a series of digits in their natural sequence. The disks 5 are independently rotatable being provided with ratchets 6 which may be actuated by any suitable mechanism to successively rotate the disks representing units, tens, etc., in the ordinary and well-known manner.
The shaft 2 is provided with a notch 7 and each of the disks 5 is provided with a Specification of Letters Patent. Patentpd Mgy 211, 11%]18, Application filedNovember 13, 1916. Serial No. 130,980.
The mode of operation of my invention will be apparent from the following brief description thereof. The disks 5 being in the positions indicated in Fig. 1 are successively actuated counting from 1 upward until the operator desires to reset the mechanism. By grasping the knurled head 3 the shaft 2 may be rotated and regardless of the relative angular positions of the corre sponding digits on the respective disks they will be successively picked up during the rotation of the shaft 2 by engagement of the tongues 9 with the notch 7 until all of the disks are brought to a position in which the corresponding digits thereon are in alinement. A single rotation of the shaft 2 is sufiicient in every case to reset the disks in the position indicated in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have perfected a simple mechanism whereby the tedious operation of resetting each individual disk manually by the use of some sharp pointed instrument (as has heretofore been customary) is entirely obviated. The simple operation of rotating the shaft through a single revolution is sufficient to automatically bring the corre spending digits on the various disksto the desired alinement and the counting opera- "returned to zeroposition at intervals. By connecting the various shafts to a single manually operable .member and embodying my invention the machines all of the disks may practically instantaneously reset.
It Will-be apparent that various, changes maybemade intheform, construction and arrangement of the parts :vvithout departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, ,the form hereinbefore described 'b iingmerely a preferred embodiment there- 0 I claim:
1. Inlaidevice of the character described, the combination of a rotatable shaft, a plurality of number disks revolubly mounted thereon, radially movable zero members in disks, means on ,the shaft and said members for eifecting operative engagement thereof, and means for rotating the shaft after one ormore of the disks have been advanced to restore allthedisksito initial position. i ii 2. In a deviceof the character described, the eb binationer a rotatable shaft,.a plur ality of number disks revolubly mounted thereon, rad ally movable zero members mounted in said disks and depressed in initial position, means on the shaft and sa d members for efliecting operative engagevment thereof, and means for rotating the innerends ofsaid members forefi'ecting operative engagement thereof, and means for rotating the shaft after one or more of the disks have been advanced to restore all the disks to initial position with the movable members depressed.
l; In adevice of the character described, the combination of a rotatable shaft, a plurality of number disks revolubly mounted thereon and provided with annular grooves, radially movable zero members in said disks, springs in said grooves and engaged with said 'inembers to hold them normally depressed in initial position, means on the shaftand on the inner ends of said members for effecting operative engagement thereof, and means for rotating the shaft after one or more of ,the disks have been advanced to restore all the disks to initial position with (the movable members depressed.
