To all whom t may concern: Be it known that I, JAMES A. SCRocGIxs, a citizen of the United States,` residing at Springfield; in the county of Greene and have invented new and useful Improvements in Springless Door- Locks7 of whichV the following is a specifica` tion. l This invention relates lto improvements in springless door locks and contemplates the provision of a devicev of this' character having a gravity blocl;r for operating the engaging position, and provided with a simpler and more efiicient device for lockingthe gravity block to hold the bolt in the operative position. Y
Another` object is to provide a gravity handle, themeans `for manually moving the bolt to the inoper- 0 ative position, and themeans for locking the bolt, so arranged that the bolt may be locked or disengaged as desired without removing the `hand 'from the handle ofthe lock.
` A further object is to so reduce the nu1ny ber of parts and simplifytheir form and ary rangement that thecost offmanufacturej is reduced and the lock is rendered less 'liable' to get out of order. A form which is conpreferable is shown in the drawings to the description below, the' novel features of the invention being recited in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical section, partly fragapplied to a Fig. 2 is a vertical Section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Q
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showing the method of applying an auxiliary locking de- `vice to the bolt.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation showing a modied form provided with the 1 conventional knob handle such as `used for residences.
Fig. 5 shows end views of various forms or' keys for operating, the lock.
Referring to the drawings more specicasing 1, which a one piece holthe side plate?) Specification. of Letters Patent.

manner as by screws 4. The front of the casing lor that portion adapted to'lie flush with the edge of the door, is provided with an opening .in a lower portion having slidably inserted therein the usualbolt 5 further supported by guides 6 on the inner walls of the casing'. For normally retaining the bolt 5 in the outer position a gravity block 7 has a downwardly extending arm S having the end engaged in a notch 9 provided in the upper surface of the bolt 5 and a laterally extending arm 10 having a terminal portion disposed in proximity to an opening 11 provided in the casing. The block 7 is suitably pivoted to the casing at the inter-section of the arms 8 and 10 as by projections 11 on the block engaging recesses 12 in the casing, and it is provided with'a web12 extending between the arms and formed with a transverse notch 13 having the lower adjacent shoulder preferably horizontally disposed. For holding the block in the downward position to restrain Ather bolt 5 from'inward movement I provideacatch or keeper element 14 slidably mounted in a. suitable guideway 15 formed inthe casing whereby the end of the element 14 is adapted for engagement in and disengagement from the notch 13. An escutcheon plate 16 is provided with a convenient handle 17 and is adapted to be secured to the door adjacent the lock in any convenient manner. The escutcheon plate is formed in proximity to the handle with a pair of openings 18 and 19 respectively, preferably spaced apart vertically over the handle. vSlidably mounted in the opening 18 is what may be termed a release stud 19 having a shank extending inwardly throug an opening in the casing and terminally connected to the keeper element 14 as by engagement in suitable recesses in the element 14 and provided outwardly of the escutcheon plate with a suitable head for manual actuation. The other opening 19 has pivotally mounted therein a thumb lever 20 extending inwardly through the opening 11 in the casing 1 and terminally engaged under the substantially horizontal arm 10 of the block 7. The outer end of the thumb klever 20 is conveniently disposed over the handle 17 for actuation of the thumb of the operator to move the bolt 5 to the inoperative position.
It will be seen that either the thumb lever 35 left hand4 doors.
