SOAP-POWDER DISPENSER.
To all "whom z't-may concern:
Be it known that I, J one W. BECKMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond Hill, L. 1., in the city of New York, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Soap-Powder Dispensers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to devices for supplying soap powder in the limited quantities required for toilet use in public lavatories and similar places, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple in construction, easily manufactured and operated, and adapted to resist successfully the severe usage to which mechanism of this type is subjected, and also to maintain theclean and tidy appearance desired in such service.
iinother important object is to provide the dispenser with locking mechanism which while simple in construction and operation, is sufficiently complex to protect the contents and prevent its removal by the user except in the small quantities delivered by operating the dispensing mechanism.
The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafterdescribed and claimed.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show the invention as it has been carried out in practice.

Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
The present improvement is based on Letters Patent to me for toilet powder containers, dated Aug. 1, 1916, No. 1,193,223, in which is described a device designed to bold face or like powder and. supply it upon a puff or the like in the small quantities desired for such purposes. The present invention is an adaptation of the same mechanism tothe dispensing of soap powder or the like.

A is the cylindrical container forming the body of the dispenser, having a funnelshaped bottom A terminating in a short nipple A The body is supported in the desired relation to a wash basin, not shown, by a bracket A secured to the body. or by other suitable means, and A is a tubular skirt or extension mounted on the under face of the bottom A and surrounding the nipple A to direct the discharge of powder to the hand held to receive it.
Extending axially of the body is a vertically movable valve rod C guided at the upper end in a bridge "D extending diametrically across the interior of the body, and carrying at the lower end a conical valve C adapted to match against the lower end of the npple A as a seat and control the passage therethrough. The rod is held nor mally in the elevated position -with the valve closed, by a spiral expansion spring F abutting at the lower end against the bottom A and at the upper end against a splitkey C inserted in the rod. The latteris depressed to lower the valve and open the passage, by an arm C extending radially from the rod below the valve C through a slot (4 in the extension A The arm is provided with a thumb-piece (1* by which such downward movement may be conveniently performed, and the downward movement is limited by a stop 0 shown as a split key near the top of the rod, striking the upper face of the bridge or guide D.
Thus arranged and the container supplied with soap powder, a downward movement of the thumb-piece and rod opensthe passage through the nipple A and permits a portion of the contents to escape'through the extension A, and on releasing the thumb-piece the rod is raised automatically by the spring F and the valve again seated on the nipple. The spring also serves as a stirrer or agitator for the soap powder in breaking up lumps and preventing (raking.
In a device of this character it is necessary to provide means for protecting the contents against unauthorized removal in bulk; this is accomplished by a cover G having an annular flange G closely inclosing the open upper end of the container A, and a means for locking such cover in place. The means shown consists of a dog H pivotally mounted in a vertical position at 71. in the bridge, having a hookv H? at .theupper through such slot, a removable cover for said body, a spring-actuated dog pivotally mounted in said bridge, a head on the interior of said cover arranged to be engaged by said dog, and an annular flange on said cover inclosing the upper end of said body and having a notch in its edge, said body having a hole located to register with said notch to admit means for disengaging said dog and head.

In a device of the character set forth, a body, a bottom therefor having a valveopening therein, and an extension surrounding such opening and having a vertical slot, a bridge extending across the interior of said body, a spring-actuated valve rod extending through such opening and bridge, a valve on said rod below and controlling such opening, an arm on said rod below said valve and extending radially therefrom through such slot, a removable cover for said body, a spring-actuated dog pivotally mounted in said'bridge, a head on the interior of said cover arranged to be engaged by said dog, and an annular flange on said cover inclosing the upper end of said body and having a notch in its edge, said body having a hole located to register with said notch to admit means for disengaging said dog and head, said rod having an orifice therein arranged to be located in alinement with said hole and notch.
8. In a device of the character set forth, a body, a bottom therefor having a valveopening therein, and an extension surroundmg such opening and having a vertical slot, a bridge extending across the interior of said body, a spring-actuated valve rod extending through such opening and bridge,

9. In a device of the character set forth, a container, a removable cover therefor, an endwise movable rod, a controlling valve carried by said rod, a pivoted latch en ageable with the cover for holding the Iatter in locked position to prevent its removal, and means, operative only when said rod is in predetermined position, for moving said latch to permit removal of the cover.
10. In a device of the character set forth, a container, a removable cover therefor, an endwise movable rod, a controlling valve carried by said rod, a pivoted latch mounted in said container and engageable with the cover for holding the latter in locked position to prevent its removal, and means, operative only When said rod is in predetermined position, for moving said latch to permit removal of the cover.
