This invention relates to improvements in overslioes or gaiters, and particularly to types adapted to be worn upon inclined suraees or slippery places, and has as its prineipal object the provision of means whereby a relativelyI firm toot-hold is secured irrespective. of the condition or inclination of the surfaces trodden upon.

The invention is composed of a relatively stift sole 10, of leather, to which the upper l] is attached by stitches l2 around the edges Vwhich also hold in position one or more thicknesses 11i of pliablle fibrous material, sueh as felt, the salue being,r adapted to cling and adhere so as to avoid the slipping of the wearer.

'lhe upper .ll is also preferablyr made of thinner and lighter felt and provided with a lining` 16. the lining and strap like extension l0 of the` upper being bound around its edges with a binding* 18 as best shownl in Fig. 1.

0n the opposite side of the upper is a short extension 20 in which are set a plurality of snap fastener elements 22, the cngaging elements 23 of which are secured to the inner side of the strap 19 near its end.

It; will he understood that the material comprising,r the upper portion of the overshoe, together with the lining, is of a flexible nature so that it may readily conform with and be securely held to the shoe of the user.

In order, however, to render the gater available with different sized shoes, the end ehments shown in Fig. 4 may housed, the same having in the end 19 a plurality of slits 25 acting in the manner of buttonholes 26 secured by stitching 27, the buttons being arranged in rows gageal'ile within the buttonholes 25, thus alw lowing a relatively wide range of adjustnient of the gaiter.

From the foregoing. will be seen that a gaiter has been described which is applicable particularly to the feet of carpenters working 'upon the roof of a building and painters or others exposed to work on inelined surfaces where, the danger of slipping.,lr and falling is considera ble.

Having' thus described my invention, what elam as new` and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A traiter eonsisting,r of a stiff sole, an upper consistingr of a toe portion secured upon the edges of said sole, one side of said upper formed with an elongated extension and the opposite side thereof having a short tab extension bevond said sole, a reinforcing marginal strip secured upon the upper longitudinal edge of said upper and also upon the transverse end edge of said lirstY and second-named extensions` a transverse series of fastener elements secured upon the tab extension, and a transverse series of coperating fasteners secured upon said irstnalned extension and adapted to interlock with the other fasteners` the marginal strips of both extensions adapted to Contact when said fasteners are interlocked.
