Application f led; October 11, 1917. SriaLlflTl esgoe.
To all whom it may concern. H v
Belt known that I, LLOYD C; MnARs,a
citizen of the United States, residing at Locustville, in the county of Accomac and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'flaine Tugs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hame tugs and the main object of the invention is to provide a tug of this character which is reliable and efficient in use, of substantial and inexpensive construction.
Another object-of the invention is to provide a tug of detachably connected sections whereby it can be quickly and readily attached 0r detached from a hame.
, A further object of the invention is to provide the tug link with a pivotal bar section which can be readily opened to facilitate easy attachment of the trace chain, means being provided that will maintain the bar section in closed position against casual opening.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be fully described hereinafter and afterward specifically claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the tug attached to a hame,
Fig. 2 represents a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the tug,
Fig. 3 represents a vertical transverse sectional view taken through the connection of the link with the U-shaped member, and
Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of the link and the U-shaped member separated.
Similar characters of reference are used to denote like parts throughout the following description and the accompanying drawings.
In order that the construction and operation of the invention may be readily understood, I have illustrated an approved embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings and will now proceed to fully describe the same in connection with said drawings, in which 1 indicates a substantially U-shaped member adapted to embrace the usual hame loop 2.
Removably positioned in the open end of the U-shaped member is the head 3 of a Specification of Letters Patent.
' clined slot 12 in the tongu Patented Apr.
The upperportion of thelink embodies a bar section6, one end of which isbevel'ed andbifurcated' as at 7 and 8. The upper return end of the link is reduced to provide a tongue 9 'and beveled shoulders 10; The free end of the tongue is also beveled in. a direction parallel with the shoulders 10 and is adapted to fit against the inner end of the bifurcation 8. A pivotal pin 11 extends through the bar section and an in- The opposite end of the bar section is beveled as at 13 for engagement with a similar beveled surface 14 on the head 3, which latter is provided with a depression 15 for the receptionof one end of a spring pressed catch pin 16 slidably mounted in the bar section. This pin is operatively held in place by a pin 17 extending transversely through a slot therein.
From the foregoing construction, it will be seen that when the bar section is swung upwardly on its pivot 11, the beveled ends 7 will ride down on the shoulders 10 and force the pivot pin 11 upwardly in the slot 12. And when the bar section is swung inwardly to a closed position, the beveled end 13 will ride down on the beveled surface 1 1 forcing the bar backward until the pivot pin rides down to the bottom of the slot 12 and the catch pin 16 snaps into the depression 15, so that when closed the bar will exactly fill up the space between the head 3 and the shoulders 10, thus making a solid and substantial link structure.
By constructing the tug in separable arts it will be manifest that it can be qu1ckly disconnected from the hame and replaced by another one without the necessity of special appliances for removing it as is ordinarily the case.
It is also to be noted that by virtue of the converging opening in the tug link, the trace chain link cannot work back and force the bar section open.
While I have described the principle of the operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that such changes in the construction and operation of the parts may be made as are within the scope of the invention set forth in the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A shame tug comprising a U-shaped member, a link embodying a swinging bar section, the ends of said bar section being beveled to converge and exactly fill up the open space in said link, a pivotal pin extending through one end of said bar section, the pivotal portion of said link having an inclined slot through which-said pivot pin 'extends ,whereby the bar section can be swung open, and means for detachably connecting one end of the link in said U-shaped member. I
' 2. A hame tug comprising a U-shaped member, a link embodying a swinging bar secti0n,;the end of said bar section being can 01 this patent may be obtained for beveled to converge and exactly fill up the open space in said link, a pivotal pin extending through one end of said bar section,
the pivotal portion of said link having an LLOYD O. MEARS.
