Be it known that I, DOROTHEA Sorrwincan, a citizen of'the UnitedStates, residing at Faribault, in the county of Rice and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings. i

This invention relates to an improved protecting device and has for its primary object to provide an article adapted for ap-' plication to the thighs of the user'to protect the same against cold, the device being particularly advantageous for use by invalids or others having poorblood circulation;

It is a more particular object of the invention to provide a device for the above purpose including an inner lining preferably of flannel, an intermediate blanket and an outer casing or covering, said blanket being detachably connected at each of its ends to the outer casing, said casing having a draw string in one end to encircle the waist, and additional means connected to the blanket whereby the device maybe suspended from the shoulders. 7

It is a further general object of my invention to provide a device for the above purpose which is simple in its construction, may be easily kept in a thoroughly clean and sanitary condition, and is highly convenient and serviceable in practical use.-

With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the. accompanying drawing, in which, V

requisite size. This flannel lining sheet is provided upon itsinnenface and adjacent to its lower end with opposed pockets indicated at 6, which are adapted to receive a hot water bottle or other suitable heating means. l V

i To the upper end of the lining 5, the edge of an outer case or linen cover is stitched, the stitching being omitted at spaced intervals to provide openings or slits8 for a purpose which will be later explained. lln this edge of the cover or case 7, a draw string 9 is arranged, whereby the upper: end of the case and the lining sheet may be contracted about the waist of the user. said blanket being of continuous circular form in plan and stuffed between the. inner and outer walls with down or goose feath- V ers, as indicated at 11. The blanket at one end is provided with snap fasteners 12, whereby said end of theblanket can be par tially closed, and the corresponding end of the outer cover sheet is provided wlth similar fasteners indicated at 13 for a like purpose. The case 7 is preferably provided with a ruiiie 1a to give the article a finished appearance.

Cords ortapes 16 are also secured to the upper edge of the lining sheet 5, each of said cords being suitably secured at spaced points to the lining sheet to provide a loop 17 therein extending across the respective slits 8. One end of each of the cords 16 is adapted to be tied to one of the loo'ps15 the upper edge of the blanket 10.

To the outer wall of the blanket 10 approximately midway between its ends, spaced loops 18 are secured, and tothese loops the inelastic tapes 19 extend. One portion of each of the tapes also extends through a loop 20 whichis secured to the inner side of the cover or case 7 adjacent the upper end thereof. The two portions of the tapes19 are extended through the slits 8, one portion of the tape also extend and l ing through the cord loop 17. As indicated,

four of these inelastic tapes are employed, and one terminal of each tape is permanently secured to the end of an elastic suspender strap 21 while the. other end of the tape is adjustably and detachably connected to said strap by a suitable buckle indicated at 22. a c

In the use of the device, it will be understood, from reference to Fig. 1, that the same is drawn upwardly over the legs and upon the'thighs of the user, the draw string in the upper edge of the case or cover 7 being tied around the waist in the usual manner. When applied to children, the device may be drawn upwardly above the hips and the outer string tied around the neck.' For use upon adults, however, the elastic suspenderstraps may be employed, preferably in addition to the tie string, and will permit or" the free movement of the legs in walking. The opposed portions or the blanket 10 at its lower edge are fastened together between'th-e legs by means or the fasteners 12 so as to prevent-the upward passage of cold air drafts. The front and rear portions of the outer case 7, at its lower end, may also be connected together at the inner sides of the legs by means of the fas- 'titi'n, what "I desire to cl'aiiio and teners It will be understood that the device can be used either with or without Water bottles or other heating means in the pockets 6 of the inner lining sheet. For use upon invalids, who'are confined to their beds, the suspender straps may, of course, beenti're'ly dispensed with.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of use and several advantages of the invention will be clearly and fully understood. The device can be very easily and quickly applied-to or removed from the limbs or body of the wearer and will afford complete protection against cold air drafts or low temperatures. The device will be found to be very serviceable and convenient by those persons whose blood circulation is below normal. The blanket can 'beeasily and quickly removed by simpl'y'untying the strings 16so that the inner 'linings'heet and the case or cover can be thoroughly washed and cleaned. It will, of course, be apparent that the article can be constructed "infvarious sizes and any desired materials I'nay be employed in the making or. itsseveral parts.-

-While I have hereinshown and described the preferred construction and arrangement "ofthe several elements, it is to be borne in'inind thairthe same are susceptible of coi'isider'able modification and I, therel fe re, reserve the privilege of adopting all stich vle'gitlmate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

5. An article of the character described including a tubular blanket, an inner lining sheeet therefor having pockets to receive a suitable heating means, an outer casing or cover sheet for the blanket permanently secured at one of its ends to the lining sheet,

and means for detachably connecting the corresponding end of the-blanket to the lining sheet.

An article of the character described including a tubular blanket, an inner lining sheet therefor, an outer casing or cover sheeet for the blanket permanently secured at one of its ends to the lining sheet, means for detachably connecting the corresponding end of the blanket to the lining sheet,

and means for retaining the article in applied position 'upon the body ofthe user.

An article of the character described including a tubular blanket, an inner lining sheet therefor, an outer casing or cover sheet for the blanket permanently secured at one'of its ends to the lining shect,means for partially closing one end of the blanket, means for detachably connecting the other end of the blanket to the connected ends of the lining and cover sheets, and

means forsecuring the latter end of the device around the waist of the user.

8. An article of the character described including an underskirt, an inner lining sheet therefor secured at one of its ends to the wall of the underskirt, a blanket inter posed between the wall of the skirt and the lining sheet, and means for suspending the blanket from the shoulders of the wearer.
