To allcctomfz't concern.' u i .1 Be it `lrnownthat I, HERBERT BRUsiUs,"a
citizen of the United States, residing at Whit? tier, in the countyo'lllios Angeles andState of California, have invented new? and useful Improvements in Adjustable `Chair-Backs, of whichthe ollowingis aspeciiication.
This invention relates to chairs and particularly` to the backs thereof and aims to provide aback which may be adjusted to suit the curvature of the-back of -theuseig Ain order to render it more hygienic and comfortable. I" m- An object of the',presentinvention is to Aprovide a novel form of'baclr which includes a slidablyy mountedexible'member or frame capablei of vertical and horizontal adjustment, the last mentioned adjustment permit. ting of various degrees of curvature, which, together with the `vertical adjustinentjwill enablethepback to be regulated to suitrpersons of various `heights-andbuilds.
. vA further object is to provide a novel means, whereby,Y when the `backis adjusted it may be secured in such adjusted position,
stored, so that when the desired adjustment is obtained it `may be again readily found. With these and other objects in viewthe invention consists in the `following novel combination andV arrangement of parts,
hereinafter more fully' described and illus- Vtrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which." i

corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings. j
In .the drawings, there `is shown rib. i
parts being shown sep a chair .ff
which includesa seat 10 and a back 11 of anyr preferred construction, it being only 'necessary that the back be of` skeleton forprovide aV supporting j mation in order to frame 12.
. The supporting fraineincludes vertical i side bars13 and upper and `lower connecting bars 14: and 15 respectively.
A"llhe invention resides particularly. in the novell, 'form of lexibleadjusting member-w" which is i mounted within. the"v supporting frame 12. This member comprises ai'raine which includes 'the upper` and lower transverse barsl-G and 17 respectively, both of which are pivotally secured to the sidebars f 13 by screwsor boltsr 18. The screws `18 are sidebars 13, by means ofwhich the'bars` 16 and 17 are moved longitudinallyl of the Y frame 12. `interposed between theends of fthehlbars 16` andf17and the side bars `13 are springs 20` which .are providedwith openings 21 which are adapted to receive the screws 18,the said springs .providing` a fric- Vreceived within slots 19 `provided fin` the tional engagement between `the said bars 16 i and 17 and the supporting frame.` `The in- Vnerfaces of the side bars 13 are grooved as indicated at 22,V the width of this groove being co-eXtensive` withthe` width of the springs 21 so as to retain them in proper position.
iieXible connection, inthe form` of flexible bars or rods 23, one end of which is secured The-bars 16 and V17 are provided with a i tothe bar 16, while the other end is `loosely i Mounted `withinthis nut is a threaded rod 1 28, whichlhas one end received within a socket or thiinble 29" secured to a freely `.mounted transverse -bar 30. i The opposite end of this rod 28 is'provided with an Hadtoitlieupper and lower bars 14 *ai `jListing;handle 31. VIhethreaded rod28 is l preferably formed in sections, the inner sec-. tion Which is connected to the transverse bar 30 being detachably secured to the outer Asection which carries the adjusting handle 31, by means of a reduced threaded extension carried by the said outer section, which is 'engageablein a" threaded socket formedy in the inner section. This enables the buter section together with the adjusting handle 31 to be removed if desired, after the back has been adjusted, so that the said handle 31 Will Anot project beyond the plane of the back to interfere or catch in the clothing of persons passing closely thereto.
The bar 30 is slidably secured to each of the flexible rods 23 by means of eyes 32, so that when the threaded rod 22 is engaged with the socket or thimble 29 and moved along the slot 26 it Will carry With it the bar 30, so as to position the said bar at any point intermediate the ends of the rods 23.
By adjusting the rod 28 Vtoward the flexn ible rods 23, they may be flexed so as to proyvide various degrees of curvature, and by 25l moving the said threaded rods along the slot 26 various forms-of curvature may be obtained.- v
l The lower or free ends of the rods 23 are .provided with transverse apertures 33, which yare ladapted to receive angular engaging pins .'34, which are guided in eyes 35 secured to the bar 17.V The pins 34 are carried by a rod 36, Which is slidably mounted in eyes37, Which are also secured to the bar 17. Thus it Will be seen that after the desired lateral or curved adjustment is made, the rods 23 may be secured in .their adjusted position by means ofthe pins 34. After the desired adjustment is obtained to suit a particular user of the chair, the chair may be adjusted to suit other lpersons and again restored to its original adjustment by inserting the pins 33 in the proper openings, so that it Will not be necessary to experiment each time an adjustment is made. i
By the construction above described various degrees of curvature may be obtained and the form of curvature varied to suit.
It is thought thatfrom the foregoing description taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of the .invention Will be apparent and that a more extendeddescription is unnecessary. The right is reserved to make such changes as Will properly fall Within the scope of the appended claims. f
