Specification o1 Letters :Pa-tent.
Patented Apr. 23, 191e.
Application filed November 14, 1914. Serial No. 872,214.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. MAGUIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Belts, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a belt for supporting garments and which can be conveniently arranged to encircle the waist and support a garment comfortably without any binding effect upon the waist such as would be uncomfortable to the wearer, particularly in warm weather.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a belt having an elastic portion whereby the belt can give with the movements of the body of the wearer, the belt being further adapted to obviate the use of the usual Suspenders, while at the same time it will present a neat and effective appearance.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of the belt looking at its inner face and toward the rear; and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a belt 10 which consists of sections 11, each at its inner end being looped around a Ushaped member 12, formed to provide a bearing for a roller 13 revolubly supported on the member 12 in advance of the said end of the belt section. An elastic member or strip-like band 14-is arranged to pass around the rollers 13 and one of its inner ends has secured thereto an apertured flap 15, preferably formed of leather. The other end of the elastic member is bent to pass around a buckle 16 on which are arranged a plurality of prongs 17, a suitable band or strip 18 being secured upon the elastic member 14 or arranged to slide thereon to accommodate the free end of the Hap 15, said flap being first passed through the buckle, with the prongs 17 passing through the apertures of the flap as shown, thus securing the ends of the elastic member together so that when the belt is Worn around the body the elasticity of the member 14 will permit the belt to expand or contract with the movements of the body, as will be read ily apparent. 4
From the foregoing description it will be plainly seen that the belt described will,
aside from performing the function of supporting a garment, fit comfortably on the body of the wearer and will give readily to any movements of the body. With the use of a belt such as described the usual sus-` penders can be dispensed with and by providing a number of openings or apertures in the flap l5, the length of the elastic member can be increased or decreased by simply adjusting the liap 15 relatively to the buckle 16.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A belt'comprising a body engaging member of non-elastic material, rectangular loop members secured upon the ends of said member, and a member of elastic material of the same width as said non-elastic member threaded through and freely movable within said loop members, and a buckle on one end of said elastic member engageable with the other end thereof, said elastic member constituting the front of the belt with said buckle facing outwardly.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOI-IN ANDREW MAGUIRE.
Witnesses:
