Be it known that we, ALFRED STELL and JOHN STELL, subjects of the King of Great Britain, and'residents, respectively, of Greenhill, Steeton, near Keighley, in the county of York, England, and 30 Devonshire street,
Keighley aforesaid, have inventedfa certain,
new and useful Improvement in Dot'fing Apparatus for Spinning and like Machines, of which the following description, together with the accompanying sheets of drawings, is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in dofiing apparatus for spinning, twisting, doubling and like machines used inthe production of yarns or threads of fibrous substances, particularly of the typeknown as flier spinning machines, and wherein the spindles are supported in bearings at their upper ends. Our present inventionconsists in the application of improved devices to do'fiing apparatus of this description for the purpose of holding uponand releasing the full bobbins from their spindles, the same device beingalso employed for supporting and moving the empty bobbins and for guiding or moving the yarns or threads to the desired sides of the spindles at the time and in the manner hereinafter described. These devices are carried by the parts which operate or movethe railsupporting the spindles, by which means they are at all times simultanously moved, although portions thereof are separately movable relativelyto the spindles in the manner and forthe purposes hereinafter described.
In the accompanying sheets of drawings Figure 1 is a sectional end elevation of a suliicient portion of a machine for spinning, flax, hemp, jute, or the like, to show the application of our invention thereto, the spindles being shown in thespinning position.
Fig. 2 is a similar viewto Fig. 1, but illustrates the-spindles as though cantedormoved at an angle to the vertical plane.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a portion of said spinning machine the spindles being shown in dotted lines in order that our improved parts may be more clearly seen.
Our improvements are equally applicable to machines for spinning or treatlngwoolen ior' worsted yarns, or flax, jute or other similar yarns or threads.
In the accompanylngsheets of drawings represents the spindles upon which the fliers 1 are mounted, these being supported at their upper ends by the rail 2, and are driven by whirls 8. The plate 2 is movable upon its fulcrum l'which is supported by brackets 5 from therail 6 which extends across-the machine. The spindles A are steadied at their lower ends by bearings 7 in the spindle. rail 8. Racks 9 and pinions '10 operated from the shaft 11 raise and lower said rail 8, the shaft 11 being oscillated by an appropriate handle of well known type mounted at the end of the machine, the oscillations of the rail 2 being also effected by anotherhanolle mounted at the end of the machine. The lifterplate 12 is traversed in any well known manner as by the rod 13, chain lhchain pulleys 15, and a shaft 16, these beingautomatically rotated from the building motion: of the machinein order that the bobbins BInay be reciprocated atthe desired .rate of speed between the lower ends of the fliers 1 to regulate the winding of theyarns on thebobbin's B in their proper positions thereto. Means are also employed for rotating the shaft 16by hand for, the purpose of manually raising and lowering the lifter plate 12 as and when ever desired. The crossbar 17 is employed as a guide for the racks 9 and other parts,
as will be readily understood. lln the case of machines for spinning flax and the like, tension is applied to the'bobbinsB by the bands 51 and weights52 the former resting against the surfaces ofgr'ooves formed insaid bobbins, and means of any desired constructlon are employed for snnultaneously applying and removing said tension bands.-
Incarrying our invention into effect we mount quadrants 18 upon the cross rail'Q and these quadrants 18 gear with other quadrants 19 fixed at'desired intervals upon the shaft 20' any suitable means, such as the well known quadrant lever (not shown) being employed to hold said shaft, so that it definitely. occupies two positions, one when the spindles are in their vertical positions, 7 as shown'by Fig. 1, and the other when they are in their inclined positions as shown by LFigQ. In both cases one of the series of pegs is in alinement or atthe same inclination as the series of spindles A. The
yarn is' severed in any suitable manner, a 86 well known form of device 42, being conv'entionall illustrated.
