KNCKDOWN COT.
Applicationiiled 'May 14J 191'?.
knock-down cote,` and the primary object thereof is the `provision of a ldeviceof that character which may be readily folded into a small compact body for` convenient transportation.y
A further object resides `in providing a collapsible cot so constructed that it mayV be quickly transformed into `and utilized as a chair or table. My contrivance asa whole is especially adapted for camping purposes.
Generally speaking, my invention consists of a rectangular frame composed of sectional hinged side rails and removable end pieces,
the structure being of suitable proportions to` provide sleeping space; supporting members or legs hingedly and pivotally mounted on the side rails, hinged transverse bracing elements pivotally secured to and connecting the legs, stays for securing the several elements in their adjusted positions, and a flexible cover or top of canvas or other material secured to and adapted to be stretched taut upon the frame.
Further, my invention resides in the various details of construction, and in the arrangement, combination, and specific form of its several parts, which will be hereinafter pointed out, recourse being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal perpsective view of the complete device set up as a cot or couch. n
Fig. 2 is an end eleva-tion of the sam ready for use.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation illustrating its adaptation as a chair.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the same folded for use as a table.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the device completely folded or in knock-down condition.
Fig. 6 is an endwise View showing the relative positions of the parts after the first step or operation of folding.
Fig. 7 is a detail view showing the application and form of one of the latch devices.

one of the fastening devices or stayswhich are adapted to maintain the structure in"y ,rigid set-up condition.
Referring more specically to the `drawings in which like reference characters are used to indicate like parts in the several views, the numeral 1 designates a canvas top or cover which is tacked orbound to the side rails 2. The side rails are formed of short, intermediate and longsections oi'v bars lA, B, and C, respectivelyV Sections A and B are joined together by hinges 3 located upon the upper contiguous ends of the bars,
the latter section being thereby adapted` to be pivoted .upwardly into` the position shown in Fig. 3. `,Sections B and C are joined by means .of the l'lshaped pieces or plates 4 whichare screwed to the pair of legs 5 ,and
mountedpivotally at to the sidesofthe adjoining endsof theside bars. Byfthis latter connecting means the sections'B and ,C may be positioned as shown in` Fig. 3, so as to constitute in conjunction with the legs 7, which latter are joined to the under faces of the side bars of section C at their remaining ends by hinges 8, inclined supports for section B when the latter is positioned as shown to provide a chair back. To retain the legs 7 and the latter bar sections in rigid extended relation (Fig. 3) I provide the latches 9 clearly illustrated in Fig. 7.
To form the contrivance into a table the same is folded as shown in Fig. 4, sections B and C and legs 5 and 7 being superposed above and supported by section A, the latter being left intact.
The legs 10 are hingedly secured to the under faces of the opposite ends of the bars of section A and are thereby adapted to fold up against their respective bars. The legs 11 are pivotally mounted at 11 to the side bars by means of the angle-pieces 11 which are screwed to the legs. In set-up position these legs as Well as legs 7 are rigidly secured by pivoted and folding stays 12 connecting the side bars and legs.
Each pair of legs is provided with the transversely disposed and inclined stabilizing connecting braces 13 which are hinged together centrally of their lengths at 14,`
their outermost ends being adapted to engage the inner faces of the legs at their uplper ends. These members 13 are pivotally Y mounted at 14 upon their respective legs by eled ends of themembers 13 may be cut away as at 13 to better allow for the retention and support of removable end stretcher strips 1G Which are intended to bez inserted Within the looped ends 17 of the sheet or top 1 `and then positioned in place as shown, abutting the outer ends of the side bars and the uppermost ends of the legsV 7 and 11. By this means .the sheet may be stretched taut, 'it being of somewhat less length than'the over-all length ofthe structure When set up. When in position the members 13 are -rigidly'positioned by the extendible pivoted stays 18 which, as shown in detail in Fig. 8, are composed of two lapended sections 18 and 18 pivoted together at'19, the section 18 being formed With an extended pointed finger 20 vWhichV engages a lug 21 on the face of section 18 When the device is in use. Vhen collapsed the lug fits snugly in a groove 22.
To allow for free` movement of the several hinged and pivoted sections and legs the canjvas top is out away as indicated'at 1.
Imc pletely collapsing the structure into portable condition, as illustrated in Fig. 5, the end strips 16 are first removed and the Yentire structure then folded longitudinally throughout its entire length, see Fig. 6.
Then the legs 7 10, and 11 may be folded, and finally the operation finished by folding the sections A, B and C at their hinged and pivoted pointed 3 and 4L.
Having described' my invention, its Construction and advantages, I claim end to lit against a leg, and a flexible sheet adaptedY to be engaged by said transverse strips.
2. The combination in a knock down cot, of parallel sectional, side rails having certain 'ringed sections, and T-plates forming hinged jconnections for other sections, a pair of legs iXed to the T-plates, transversely arranged angle-plates pivotcd to the legs, centrally hinged V-shaped braces xed to said angleplates With their hinged ends resting upon a support, and the upper ends of said menilloers having beveled ends bearing against the egs.
` In testimony whereof, I aHiX my signature.
