COMBINED NAIL HOLDING- AN D SPACIN G MEAN S.
' Application filed December 12,1916. Serial No.
To all/whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. FISCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing atv Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Nail Holding and Spacing Means, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to a combined nail holding andspacing strip and has for one of its objects tdprovide convenient means for holding nails, pins or similar impaling ob ects which are to be driven by use of a hammer or similar tool, so that the time, or a considerable part thereof, required by a workman in picking up, placing or spotting the nails may be saved.
Another. object isto provide means by use of which nails, when driven, may; appear m straight lines, horizontal or otherwise, and will be uniformly spaced. Still another object is to provide for the mounting of the nails, an adhesive so arranged that when the nail has, been driven h me, the adhesive may have a bearing under e nail head and will partly fill the puncture produced by the nail, this being of advantage upon buildings where shingles or roofing sheets are employed.
The invention includes a new article of manufacture consisting of rolls, packages or spools of flexible strips, each strip'being provided at longitudinal intervals with nails, pins, brads or the like, these being disposed transversely of and connected with one of the sides of the strip by means of suitable adhesive material.
-With the foregoing objects in view and others to be hereinafter mentioned, the in ventlon presents a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing,.where- 1n,
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a flexible strip with nails or brads adhesively connected therewith, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are broken away, perspective views, respectively, of sheet roofing and shingles employed in roof construction, illustrating use of the device for disposing the nails in alinement and at uniform distances from each other. sheet, a driven nail, and impacted adhesive material, to illustrate one of the uses of the invention. Fig. 7 illustrates a modified form of mounting for the flexible ,strip. now to the drawing, numeral Referring a flexible strip of any suitable 10 indicates material and nails, brads or other impaling objects 11 mounted thereon.
The invention is particularly useful in building construction for securing fiber roofing sheets 12 or shingles 14 upon a roof 13 as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5.
In the Work of covering a roof and nailing the sheets 12 thereon as heretofore practised, the brads or nails, on account'of a lack of means or facilities for measuring, are often disposed at too great a distance from each other; also the fibrous sheets frequently become broken or punctured by the nails being scattered thereon. and tram ed I brad or nail is not driven at right angles to I the roof boards. Also on account of changes of the weather and particularly the effects of extreme heat, the nails or brads-become partly drawn or loosened. By use of the herein described invention these objection- 95 which, in
able features may be avoided; and for securing composition shingles width, are uniform, the use of the-invention is of great advantage.
In carrying out the invention the nails means, the means herein shown being small portions of adhesive material 15 which connect the nails with and'at uniform intervals upon one of the sides of the strip 10, the adhesive material, when the device is used in connectionl-with roofing sheets or shingles being of a kind which will be imperviops to the weather. In instances where it is desired that the nails, after being driven home, will be disnails are mounted upon the strips as shown of any desired length, its width being somewhat less than the length of the 85. I and the fingers while posed at right angles to the support, the
in Fig. 1, each nail being disposed at right partly surrounds a nail or brad, the loop beangles to the strip 10, the lower ends of the ing formed by bending the strip and connails being disposed below the lower edge necting it by use of an adhesive materlal to Y of the strip so that said edge will be mainother parts of the strip, said adhesive ma- 5 tained above the support or roof boards,'to terial engaging the nail or brad as above 40 facilitate operation, and by referring to Fig. mentioned. llhis modified form'jor means 9 it will be seen that an operator by use of for a mounting of parts is considered to be a thumb and finger may conveniently hold within the scope of the invention since 0pthe strip in an uprlght position to cause the eration is practically .the same as described.
