citizen of the United States, residing at Caser, in the county of Natrona and State of yoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Bar Holders, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in printing devices, in which provision is made for adjusting the type to control the distances between the lines, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devices of this character. Another objectl of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device' wherein means-are provided for supporting a plurality of type bars carrying lines of type, and arranging them to be adjusted to con'- trol the distances between the bars without structural change inthe device. l

The improved device includes a base member or block 10 of any suitable size and of any suitable material, the block being larger than the largest sheet upon which the printed matter is to be impressed. Rigidly connected to the upper face of the member 10 are metal strips 11 upturned at the ends as shown at 12-13, the members 11 with their upturned ends providing means for coupling the base member 10 to the type bar supporting portion vof the printing device.

T he member 10 is provided with a recess indicated at 18, into which the member 16 enters when disposed in its lower position. By this arrangement the member 10 is firmly locked 1n position relative to the member 1'4 and prevented from lateral displacement thereby, while'the member 16 and the recess 18 are caused to coact to prevent longitudinal disv placement between the parts. The other upturned end 13of the other'member 11v is providel with a threaded aperture to receive a binding screw. 19 .which bears lagainst the adjacent lnclined face of the member 14. The locking bar l16 of the set screw 19 thus coacts to rigidly couple the member 10 to the supporting member 14, while at the same time the member 10 and its attachments may -be easily removed and attached when required. Any suitable means may be employed for actuating the supporting member 14 to cause the impressions to be made upon the sheets of paper, but for the purpose of illustration a conventional inking and impression device is shown, comprising an ink pad of suitable construction, represented as a Whole at 20, and a yieldable bed member 21 upon which the sheet to be printed is placed. A lever device represented as a whole at 22, is pivoted at 23 to the frame-work 24 which supports the pad 20 and the bed member 21, and is likewise pivoted at 25 to bracket devices 26 extending from the platen member 14.
The lever devices 22 are coupled at their upper ends by a hand grip member 27. By
this arrangement itwill be obvious that the` supporting member 14 may be arranged as `:shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and in Fig. 4
in position to impress the type upon the pad 20, and likewise adapted to be disposed in the position shown in dotted lines in Fi 1 to d1spose the platen member abovethe ed 21 to complete the printing action.
Attached to the lower face of the base member 10 are a plurality of type-bar holdf ing devices, arranged side by side and in parallel relation as illustrated in. Figs. 4, 5 and 6. Each holding device is pressed or bent from a metal strip substantially into L shape, whereby lwebs 28-29 are produced and extending at right angles to each other. The holding stripsare attached to the lower face of the member 10 with the webs 28 bearing againstthe latter and preferably in engagement edge to edge. The webs 29 are thus supported at right angles to the member 10 and in spaced relation. ln Figs. 4 and 5 each of the webs 29 is formed with an exten# sion portion 30 which is bent inwardly to- Ward the web 28 and in flattened V shape as shown more clearly in Fig.A 5, -the Vshaped portions'forming guides for the type-bars.
The type-bars are preferably formed in two portions, a supporting-portion 31 of resilient sheet metal bent into channel shape as shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, with one side web further. bent to form a Aflat V shaped channel or depression 33 to receive the rib 30 of the portion 29 of the support, and with a plurality of apertures 33 in the connecting web, as shown 'in Fig. 3. The 'type bearing portion 32, preferably of a rubber compound or like material, usually employed in rubber stamps, is disposed upon the perforated face of the member 31 and secured thereto by vulcanizing, a portion of the stock or bed of the type bearing portion entering the apertures and thus lockin the member` 32 to the member 31. By t is arrangement the typebars may be inserted either endwise between the webs 29 and held in place by the coaction of the portions 30 of the webs 29 and the 31 may be forced bodily into spaces between the portions 29, the channeled web of the member 31 yielding to a sufficient extent to permit the channel 33 to engage the rib 30.
Each type-bar may thus be lifted bodily vfrom its bed or inserted therein without disturbing'the remaining bars. By arranging the holding device 28-29 in close proximity it will be obvious that the type-bars may be arranged at any required distance apart, and any required number employed. If the lines of the matter to be printed is in close relation then the spaces between the holding members will all be occupied by the typebars, but if the printed matter is to be displayed, or the lines spaced. one from the other, then only the required number of the type-bars will be employed, and spaced yas required. y
In printing fbills of fare, for instance, the spaces between the lines of printed matter is of considerable width, so that comparaposition shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in contact with the 'sheet upon the bed 21,.
the latter will be instantaneously printed It will thus be obviousthat as many sheets' of paper as may be required can be expeditiously printed. It will also be obvious that the printed matter may be very quickly changed when required. The type-bars will be made u to contain the names of various dishes to e served, or arranged to contain matter which may be frequently required, sothat the labor required to change the matter to be printed is materially lessened.
In Fig. 6 a modiication is shownl in the form of the rojecting portion 30, which consist@ in substituting therefor a rib device 35 bent froml the material of the web 29, while the portion 32 of the type-bar is formed with a channel corresponding to the shape of the rib 35, but this does not constitute a de arture from the invention. The improved evice is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, and applied without material structural change'to operating devices of various forms and shapes.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the ,class described, a supporting fbase, a plurality of holding members each including coacting webs in angular relation transversely, one web of each holding member being connected to the base and the other webs directed substantially in parallel relation and provided respectively with a longitudinally directed guide rib, and type bars each having coacting resilient webs to engage between the webs of the holding members, one of said resilient type bar webs having a channel to engage the guide rib of one of the holding members.
2. A device of the class described comprisinga supporting member having an operating means attached thereto, a base member detachably coupled to said supporting member, a plurality of coacting holding members vconnected to said base member in spaced relation and 4each provided with alongitudinally directed guide rib, and type-bars engaging between said holding members and each having a yieldable web formed with a longitudinal guide channel engaging the adjacent guide rib.
3. A device of the class described including a base member, a plurality of holding members each including coacting webs in angular relationtransversely, one web of each holding member being connected to the base member and the other-webs directed in parallel relation to each other and each provided with a reversely beveled eXtensionl directed toward the base and forming a guide rib, and type bars each having coacting resilient webs to engage between the we'bs of the holding members, one of said resilient type bar webs having a channel to engage'the projection of the guide rib.
