To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN 0. Homer, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in Vises and its primary object resides in the provision of a vise in which the space between the two cooperating jaws is unobstructed by a screw, bar or other connection.
I attain this object byproviding in a vise of standard construction in which two jaws are joined together by a pivot at the lower ends of their tails, a bearing disposed exteriorly of the movable jaw and formed integrally with the fixed jaw for the support of a clamping screw which abuts against the movable jaw to move it toward the fixed jaw instead of passing through the space between the jaws as in the ordinary construction at present in common use.
The pivotal connection between the jaws of a vise of my improved construction, is preferably made adjustable to preserve the parallelism of the two jaws when moving apart and a spring may be provided to cause the movable jaw to follow the movement of the clamping screw when the screw is 1'0- tated to open the vise.
An embodiment of my invention has been shown in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a vise of the improved construction,
Fig. 2, a partially sectional side elevation of the same, and
Fig. 3, a longitudinal section taken along the line 3-3, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by numerical reference characters, 2 designates the fixed jaw of a bench-vise and 3 the movable jaw of the same.
The stationary jaw has as usual a number of holes 4 for the passage of screws or bolts by which it is secured to a bench or other suitable support and it carries by means of a forwardly projecting connection 5 at the lower end of its tail 6, an upright standard 7 which at its upper end has a screw-threaded bearing 8 for the clamping screw 9.
The movable jaw of the vise which is positioned in the space between the stationary jaw and the upright 7, extends with the end of its tail 1O loosely through a passage 12 in the before-mentioned transverse connection 5 by which the standard is integrally connected with the stationary jaw.
The movable jaw is partially connected with a stationary member of the vise by a cylindrical bearing block 13 which is loosely fitted in a correspondingly formed socket in the lower portion of its tail and which has a transverse screw-threaded bore for its movable support upon a feed-screw 14: which is mounted in alined openings in the trans verse connection 5 of the stationary part of the vise.
The screw is held against longitudinal movement by a pin 15 projecting into a circumferential groove of its shank and its head which is positioned in front of the upright 7 at the lower end thereof, is like the heads of the screws ordinarily used on vises of this character, provided with a transversely extending rod 16 to provide the leverage required for its rotation.
The clamping screw supported in the bearing 8 at the upper end of the standard 7 abuts against the outer surface of the movable jaw and by its rotary movement forces the jaws together for the purpose of clamping an object between them.
A spring 17 fastened at its ends to the extremities of the tails of the two jaws beneath the plane of the pivot of the movable jaw, serves in the operation of the vise to maintain the moving jaw in constant contact with the abutting end of the clamping screw.
To guide the movable jaw in its movemnt about the pivot and prevent lateral displacement of the same, the opposite sides of the bearing 8 have been flattened to provide parallel guide faces and the moving jaw is provided with forwardly projecting parallel arms 18 which loosely engage said faces.
Having thus described the mechanical construction of my improved vise it will be readily seen that the absence of all connections from the space between the jaws above the point at which their tails are joined together, permits of firmly clamping in the vise an object the construction and dimensions of which cause it to project a considerable distance below the contact faces of the aws.
The spring 17 between the tail ends of the jaws, compels the moving jaw to follow the clamping screw in its outward movement when the vise is being opened and while within the spirit of my invention the two jaws may be connected at their lower ends by an ordinary hinged joint, it is preferable to provide a device such as the feed screw 14 for the purpose of adjusting the position of the pivotal axis or the moving jaw and thereby maintain the contact faces of the jaws in a substantially parallel position.
Having thusdescribed my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is:
1. A vise comprising a substantially U- shaped body having a jaw at the end of one of its upwardly extending portions, a bearing at the end of its other upwardly extending portion, and an opening in its transverse lower portion, a feed-screw mounted on the transverse lower portion of the body, a nut in said opening traveling on said screw, a jaw extending through said opening and pivotally supported on said nut, and a screw supported on said bearing, in abutment with said pivoted jaw.
2. A vise comprising a substantially U- shaped body having a jaw at the end of one of its upwardly extending portions, and a bearing at the end of its other upwardly extending portion, a feed screw mounted on the transverse lower portion of the body, a
nut cooperating with said screw, a jaw pivoted on said nut, and a screw supported in said bearing, in abutment with said pivoted jaw.
3. A vise comprising a substantially U- shaped body having a jaw at the end of one of its upwardly extending portions, a bearing at the end of its other upwardly extending portion and an opening in its transverse lower portion, a pivot mounted for adjustment on the transverse lower portion of the body, a jaw supported on said pivot, means for the adjustment of the pivot on the body, and a screw supported in said bearing in abutment with the pivoted jaw.
4:- A vise comprisinga stationary jaw, a bearing fixed with relation thereto, a pivoted jaw cooperating with the fixed jaw, a screw in said bearing to force the jaws together, a spring holding the pivoted jaw in constant engagement with said screw, and a screw feed for moving the pivot of the movable jaw to vary its angular position with relation to the stationary jaw.
