Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led July 19, 1916. Serial No. 110,226.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. BRADY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Autographic Registers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in autographic registers of the class provided with a plurality of strips of paper leading from as many rollsover a writing tablet, and the object of this invention is to provide a register of improved construction comprising a casing in which a draw is slidably mounted, the latterbeing adapted to carry a large number'of rolls of paper.
A further object of the inventionV is to provide a plate covering the writing tablet, which when in operative position, serves as a rest for the' hand of the writer, and also serves to engage the draw to lock and retain the same in closed position.
The invention further consists in constructing both the casing `and the sliding draw with two sheet metal side plates each folded on its upper edge to provide longitudinal grooves therein, these grooves in the draw member serve to hold the roll carrying plates, whereby these plates are releasably supported and are adapted to be readily removed and replaced by others to support the desired number of rolls in the draw.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists 0f certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings 10 designates the body portion ofmy'improved register which is supported preferably on ay wooden base 11.".This casing is preferably'formed with two side plates of sheet metal each hav-A ing its upper edge 12 and its lower edge 13,.
bent outward land thenbackward upon itself as best illustrated in Fig. 4L forming a longitudinal groove therein. A plate. 14- formsy the bottom of the casing and its edges 15 are secured in the corresponding grooves in the lower edge 13 of the side plates formed to receive it. The grooves in the upper edge 12 of these side plates serve to support the roll carrying strips 16, see Fig. 3, in which the guide rolls 46 are mounted, the edges of which are inserted therein and retained by the screws 17. These grooves also serve to receive the opposite edges of the writing tablet. 18 over which the strips of paper are drawn from the different rolls 19 between the carbons (not shown).
Posts 414i are provided in the tablet to enter corresponding holes in the sheets of carbon, and spring pressed fingers 45 serve to grip and retain the front edge of these carbon sheets.
The cover plate 20 is hinged at 21 in the ears 22 on the body portion and its face is cut away as at 23 to expose the face of the upper paper strip t0 be written on, and the plain surface 24 of the plate serves as a rest for the arm of the person while writing.
The front end of this Plate has a downwardly turned lip 25 for thepurpose of engaging the front plate 47V ofthe draw to lock the same closed. A spring pressed binding lip member 26 is hinged onthe ear 27 on the plate 20 and may be raised against the pressure of the coil spring 28 by the operating handle 29 to permit the paper strips to be advanced.

This draw is constructed similar to the casing in that its side plates 31 are formed of sheet metal, each edge of which is first turned outward and then backward upon itself as at 32 and 35 forming a groove 33 at the' top and at the bottom. rlhe bottom groove serves to receive the edges of the bottom plate 36 which are fastened therein whilev the top groove serves to receive the inwardly turned flange portion t0 of the roll carrying angle plate 38. rlhis roll' carrying plate may be constructed 0f anyV desired length that is, long enough to accommodate the desired number of rolls7 if twov rolls are' to be'used, then the :plate will be long enough to accommodate them, and longer plates vmay replace them when a greater' number of rolls is desired to be carried.
This plate has a downwardly lextending body portion. 39 and an outwardly turned flange portion 40' and is provided with slots 41 preferably set-on an angle to prevent the rolls from being withdrawn there` from by the unrolling of the paperstrips and these slots are placed the properdistance apart and are arranged to receive the trunnions 4:2 of the different rolls. By constructing these plates in this way the flange portion 40 may be pressed into its groove at the top of this plateand by the friction of the upper lip is held securely in position therein, at the same time being adapted to be readily removed and replaced by another of the length desired.`
A light metal friction spring i9 is bent'in a U-shape in cross section. and has one of its arms riveted as at i3 to this angle plate, its free end 5l extends upward and is adaptedto press lightly against the end of the roll 19 to control the unwinding of theV paper strip therefrom. r)The middle portion of rthis spring is removed as at 48 to permit the roll' trunnion to extend therethrough and a handle portion 52 is provided for withdrawing the spring from the roll.

Having. thus described one illustrative ernbodiment of my invention l desire it to be understood that although specific termstare` employed they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for the purpose of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined and limited only by the appended claims.
