SEPARABLE HINGE.
Application filed July 21, 1917. Serial No. 182,013.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD. J. FELLMAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of /Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,'and exact description thereof. 7
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in separable or loose joint hinges, particularly those adapted for use in connection with window screens, storm sashes, shutters and the like.
It is well known that separable hinges of the ordinary loose joint type are prone to rust very easily and quickly at the pins and in the knuckle joint and thereby render them unserviceable within a short time.
It is therefore primarily the object of the present invention to provide a loose joint hinge which is proof against rusting. This result is obtained by the peculiar, yet very simple nature of the parts forming the hinge.
It is also the object of this invention to provide means whereby various types, such as surface or mortise hinges, may be constructed from blanks of substantially the same shape. This is not possible with the usual shutter or window screen hinge.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a hinge consisting of two parts which are reliably held against becoming accidentally separated.
With these general objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
- In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of a half mortise hinge constructed in accordance with my invention, parts of said hinge being broken away and being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is .a horizontal sectional view of a half mortise hinge taken on the plane of the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of a surface hinge.
Fig. 4 is still another view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating a full mortise hinge, and
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail plan views of the blanks from which the two parts of my improved hinge are formed.
By reference to the several figures of the drawing, wherein simila reference charac- Specification of Letters Patent.

. tise type consists of three parts, a pintle carrying part 1, a ear carrying part 2, and a pintle 3. I The first two parts are readily stamped from sheet metal of appropriate gage to form the blanks shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
The-blank of the pintle carrying part 1 consists of an attaching portion 4 and a pair of laterally extending arms 5 and 6 which are spaced apart and have disposed therebetween a lip 7, the lower end of the latter being spaced from the arm 6 as at 8. The attaching portion 4 is provided with screw holes 9 to receive fastening screws 10.
The arms 5 and 6 are rolled upon themselves to form knuckles, the openings of which are alined to receive said pintle 3. For con venience in description the knuckles will be designated by the same numerals as the above mentioned arms, that is to say, the
' knuckle formed from the arm 5 will bear this numeral, while that constructed from the other arm will bear the numeral 6. These knuckles have a slight spring action and before application of the pintle are slightly smaller in diameter than the major portion thereof. Said pintle will thereby be held tightly within the knuckles without additional fastening means other than the natof the metal forming said knuckles.
The end of the pintle 3 which is normally disposed at the top when the same is positioned vertically projects slightly beyond the knuckle 5 as shown at 11. The intermediate portion of the pintle between the knuckles 5 and 6 is reduced as at 12, said reduced portion extending from the inner end of the first mentioned knuckle to a point spaced from the inner end of the other knuckle.
As shown in Fig. the blank for the ear carrying part of the hinge also has an attaching portion 13 provided with screw apertures 14. Connected with the attaching portion 13 by a contracted neck 15 is a portion 16 on the opposite ends of which ears 17 and 18-are formed. The ears are constructed by bending this portion 16 laterally at its opposite ends. The ear 17, which is the upper ear, has a circular opening 19 for engagementv with the preferably cylindrical end 11 of the pintle. The other ear 18 has an open end slot 20, the inner portion of which is substantially circular to thereby provide a contractedinouth 21. The circular portion of the slot is designed for engagement with the cylindrical part of the pintle between the knuckles 5 and 6.
in assembling the two parts of the hinge thus formed the ear carrying part isso positioned that the slot in the ear 18 may engage thereduced portion 12 of the pintle with the other ear 17 positioned above the end 11 oi said nintle;
Now upon downwarc. movement of the ear carryingipart-Jhe ears ca ried t will be engaged with the cylindrical portions of the pintleo The mouth 2" :E the slot is sufiiciently wide to receive reduced portion of the Pll'llllC-B, but is less han the width of the-ma or portion thereof.
wherebv the two parts will beheld in rote 7 tire relation when the are scateu on. the
upper ends of the knuckles as shown V 1 in order tohold the two parts against separation except when ii one position, the stop lip T has been provided. This lip, as has been shown iuthe se rc" l figures wil engege the ear 1 except when the uncut of In o the'slot 20 is alinel therewith.
V .s, noveincn will be limited by the l'nuc A the end of said lip exceptwhei position.
From Fig. 1 will be noted that the 17 will eftectively core the inn ckle 5 and form in eiiect a. cover hereior to prevent rusting of the severalparts, particurern" said knuckles. This protection will he or forded even thoughthe opening 19 is sonic wl at-larger than the end 1 of the pintle which is necessary to allow the screen and window'traine, or other parts on which the hinge 1s to be used, to move together to compensate for any slight inaccuracies in the posltionin of the parts of the hlnge.
Figs; 2, 8 and show four positions into which the two blanks 1 and 2 may be bent to ccnstuict. hinges Fig"; 2 shows two 13 hinge, one position being indicated end-dash lines.- h other two figures illusrate surface and r uil mortise hinges repectively.
