Description
I J. S. JENKINS. GLASS COVER AND RECEPTACLE. APPLICATIO'N men o cnan- 91s.
Patented Mar. 26, 1918.
GLASS COVER AND RECEPTAGLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented iirar. as, rare.
Application filed Qctcber 30, 1916. Serial No. 128,572.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN S. JENKINS, a citizen of the United Patates, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State oi? Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glass Covers and l-tecep tacles, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to a cover for a medicine glass and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character adaptedto fit the top of a glass receptacle or medicine container and be provided with means for indicating the time at which the next dose of medicine is to be taken.
As a further object of the invention the cover is provided with a supplemental container for receiving pills, powders, tablets or other similar forms ofmedicin'e whereby the cover may be employed for use in connection with both a liquid and a dry form of medicine. 7
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a cover having a curved flange "for suspending the supplemental container within the glass or liquid container whereby the indicator hand on the cover may be employed to indicate the intervals at which either the liquid medicine or the dry medicine is to be taken.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a cover which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character areordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;
Figure 1 is a plan view of the cover.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showing the medicine glass partly broken away.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the closure for the supplemental container. 7
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 4:. 7
Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my inven tion, and in which like numerals of reference indicate cor-responding parts throughout the several views, the medicine glass or container 1 receives the liquid medicine which is to be taken at pro-determined intervals. The cover comprises a circular disk 2 of a diameter less than the diameter of the container 1 and is provided around its marginal edge with figures or numerals as shown in Fig. l of the drawing which are arranged in regular order similar to the arrangement, upon the face of a clock or watch. A central opening is formed in the disk 2 and a pivot pin 3 is mounted in the said opening. Pivot-ally mounted upon the pivot pin 3 is an indicator hand l having its point terminating in close proximity to the edge of the disk 2 whereby it may indicate the time set for taking the medicine.
integrally formed with the marginal edge of the disk 2 is a convex flange 5 which-extends completely around the edgeof the disk and is designed to rest upon the marginal edge of thecontainer 1. The convex configuration of the flange 5 permits the disk to be disposed below the plane of thcupper edge of the container whereby accidental displacement of the cover trom the container will be prevented. A relatively narrow annular rim 6 extends from the outer edge 01"? the flange 5 and is disposed in a horizontal plane. integrally formed with the flange 5 and the rim 6 and extending outwardly for a short distance therefrom is a pair of retaining fingers 7. The terminals of the fingers '2' are disposed in close proximity to each other. Formed in the rim 6 is a notch 8 in vertical alinement with the space between the terminals of the fingers 7 and this space is of a width suilicient to receive the narrow portion of the handle of a'medicine spoon (not shown). The space between the terminals of the fingers 7 permits the handle of the spoon to pass through when the handle is turned edgewise, after which the handle may be disposed in the notch 8 and the fingers will embrace the wide portion of the handle usually formed at the end of a spoon handle and thus suspend the spoon in position whereby it may be conveniently held for use at all times.
From the point at which the convex flange 5 joins the circular disk 2 I have provided an integrally formed annular wall 9 which depends vertically from the disk for providing a support for a supplemental container for pills, powders, tablets and the like. The supplemental container 10 comprises a circular closure disk 11 having the annular wall 12 integrally formed adjacent the periphery of the disk and adapted to fit snugly within the space embraced by the annular wall 9 so that the interior surface of the annular wall. 9 and the exterior surface of the wall 12 are in close contact when the supplemental container is mounted in position. Formed on the interior surface of the wall 9 is a pair of oppositely positioned tongues 13, and these tongues are adapted to lit in the grooves 14 formed in the exterior surface of the wall 12. This groove 14: communicates by means of the passageway 15, with the marginal edge of the wall 12 whereby the tongues 13 may be admitted into the groove 14. 33.8 shown by Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawing, the groove 14.- is deepest at the point at which the passageway 15 enters the groove and the groove, from this point, gradually merges into the outer surface of the wall 12 thus providing an eccentric surface 16 in the bottom of the groove 141 which is adapted to contact with one of the tongues 18 for retaining the supplemental container in operative position.
Physicians will often prescribe medicine in both liquid and dry-form for the same patient, the liquid to be taken at pre-deter mined intervals and the dry medicine in the form of pills, powders, or tablets, to be taken also at pro-determined intervals but varying from the time at which the liquid medicine is to be taken. Therefore, in using this device in connection with both liquid medicine and dry medicine, the pills or powders will be placed in the supplemental container 10 and the liquid medicine placed Within the glass container 1. In order to avoid the necessity of remembering the time at which the next dose of medicine is to be taken, the indicator hand 4: will be turned to the hour, or fraction of the hour, at which the patient is to take the medicine and assurance is thus given that the dose will be administered at the proper time. For instance, a pill or a tablet might have to be taken on the even hour and a spoonful of liquid medicine on the half hour. In this event it is merely necessary to remove the cover from the glass container and turn the supplemental container until the same is released from its connection with the cover, whereupon a pill or tablet may be removed to be administered to the patient. After replacing the supplemental container the device is set to the hour at which the liquid medicine is to be taken and the spoon for administering the liquid is held in a con venient place so that every necessary element for the proper administration of medi' cine is contained within a single device.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable cover has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire itto, be understood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
I claim:
A cover of the character described comprising a circular disk including a convex flange having a relatively narrow annular rim extending from its marginal edge, a pair of retaining fingers projecting from the said convex flange and extending over the said annular rim and having their terminals spaced apart, the said annular rim having a notch below the spaced apart ends of the said retaining fingers and of a width greater than the distance between the said ends of the fingers whereby a spoon handle may be passed edgewise through the space between the said ends and received in the said notch.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
