Description

i. HUNGERFORD\ ANIMAL ETESTRAINING DEVICE.
APPLICATION men was. 1911.

/ v INVENTOR fnr 1 IRA HUNGERFORD, 0F MILROY, INDIANA.
ANIMAL-RESTBAINING DEVICE.
eas es.
Application iiledAugust3, 1917. Serial No. 184,319.
To all whomit'mctg concern:
Be it known that 1, TBA HUNGERFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milroy,'in the county of Bush and State of Indiana, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Animal --Restraining Devices, of which the following is a specifica tion. f v
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tools for catching and holding animals for thepurpose of performing ringing, branding or other like op erations.
The primary object of thisinvention is to provide a tool ofthis character which can be manipulated with onehand to securely hold an animal'and thus enables the operator to have the free use of the other hand to perform the ringing orother'operation.
Another object of the invention'is to provide a tool of the character described which has the clamping parts thereof so arranged that the same will be caused to grip the animal with increasingfirmness as the latter pulls away in an endeavor to escape.
A further important object of the invention is to provide a tool of the above de scribed general character which is constructed of a few simple parts easily manufactured and assembled, thus providing a strong and durable device which is readily operated and can be placed on the market at a minimum cost.
The above and other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the application thereof.
My improved catching and holding'tool includes a jaw frame 1 to which is pivotally secured a U shaped loop or mouth piece 2. The jaw frame 1 comprises a curved bridge or nose piece 3 from which extend the parallel side members 4:. At a point remote from the nose piece 3 these side members are curved upwardly as indicated at' 5, inwardly as at 6, and the free ends thereof are then flattened and again extended in spaced parallelism to provide the extensions 7 A handle is indicated at 8 and is provided at one end with a hand grip 9. The opposite end of-the handleis hooked as indicated at lO and is adapted-to secured between the extensions 7 by means of a pivot bolt 11, the hookedend of the handle eXtend'ng beyond the pivot point and adapted to be engaged by a stop '12 connecting the extensions 7 at a 'point spaced from thep'ivotboltll.
The mouthpiece or formed of a -single piece of metal bent into U form to provide the bit 13 and the spaced side members 1%. The free ends ofthese side'members 1e are adapted to be flattened and'pivotally securedto the sides 4 ofthe jaw frame as indicated at 15. v 7
My invention although capable of general' use is more especially adapted for catching and holding hogs while being ringed. In using the tool the bit 13 is placed in the animals mouth and as the latter following its natural instinct pulls away and throws its head toward the ground in an endeavor to escape, the bridge piece 3 will be brought to bear firmly against the nose of the animal. The flexible connection between the handle and the jaw frame is to enable the operator to more conveniently retain his grip on the handle when the animal lowers his head in an endeavor to free itself. The stop bolt 12 holds the jaw frame in a straight line with the handle when inserting the bit 13.
It is understood that the foregoing discloses only a preferred embodiment of my invention and that I may resort to such minor changes in the construction, proportion and arrangements of the several parts thereof as are desired, providing of course that such changes come within the scope of the appended claims and are not a departure from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A tool for catching and holding animals, including a handle, a clamp pivotally secured thereto, a stop carried by said clamp and adapted to be engaged with said handle, and a mouth piece pivotally secured to said clamp.
2. A tool for catching and holding animals including a handle rod, a clamping frame including spaced side members having their free ends pivoted to said handle rod, a stop carried by said side members and engageable with the handle to limit movement of the clamping frame in one be pivotally loop 2 is preferably direction, and a second clamping frame pivotally secured to the side members of the first mentioned frame. 7 c 3. A tool for catching andholding animals, including a handle, a clamp comprising a longitudinally grooved nose piece, side members extending in spaced parallelism from said nose piece and having their free ends pivotally secured to said handle, a transverse pin carried by said side members and engageablewith the handle to limit the movement of the frame in one direction, a
second clamping frame including a bit adapted to be inserted in the animals mouth and having its end bent into parallelism for pivotal engagement with the side members 7 of said first mentioned frame.
4:. A tool for catching and holding animals including a handle, a clamp comprising a nose piece, side members extending in spaced parallelism from said nose piece,
the ends of said side members being curved upwardly and inwardly-for pivotal engagement with said handle, and a mouth piece including a bit, parallel side members in-.
tegral with said bit and adapted to be pivotally secured to said clamp.
5. A toolfor, catching and holding ani mals including a handle having a hooked (lopies of this patent may be obtained for end, a jaw frame comprising a nose piece,
side members extending in spaced parallellsm "from said nose piece, the ends of sald side members being curved upwardly 'and inwardly and then again extending in having its side memberspivotally secured to said jaw frame adjacent the nose piece thereof. v r
6. A tool for catchingandholdinganimals including a handle, a jaw frame pivotally secured to said handle adjacent one end thereof, a stop carried by the vjaw frame and engageable at times with, the end of said handle to limit swingingmovement of the jaw frame in one direction, and amoutlr piece pivotally secured to said jaw frame 7 for clamping cooperation therewith.
In test mony in presence of two wltnesses.
