SWAT-HOOK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'Emsns'r N. Hui-IP11 parts designed as to be capable of rapid manufacture at a small cost.
In the accompanying drawings: 7
Figure 1 is a view showing a front and side elevation of one of the elements, namely, the hook and loop.
Fig 2 is a similar view of another of the elements, namely, the spring.
Fig 3 is aview illustrating a front, side and end elevation of a third element, namely, the clip.
Fig. 4 is a view showing a front and side elevation of certain elements partially assembled.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view relatively enlarged of the finished article.
Fig. 6 is a side view of the finished article partly in section.
The main portion of the device comprises an integral or one-piece hook and loop member, 1 being the hook portion and 2 being the loop or cyeportion. This elementis preferably formed from a single piece of wire bent to give the desired hook formation and desired loop formation. '3 is an offset at the rear end of the wire which offset is preferably arranged alongside the shank of the hook portion as best seen in Fig. 1. 4: represents a bladc'springthe rear end of which is hooked or bent back to form a short extension in. v5 is a spring holding clip having two side flanges -66 which are arranged to wrap around the base of the hook shank adjacent to the loop to give a proper finish thereto by covering up the rear end of wire. At the bottom of the channel between the sides 66 of the clip is preferably formed a shallow groove 7 shaped to receive the end 4* of the spring. Projecting rearwardly from the opposite corners of the base clip 5 are flaps 8-8. These side flaps are designed to be wrapped around the wire of the loop at opposite sides of the hook shank, thereby forming bushings which not only gives a finished.

appearance to the article, but which also serve to hold the clip 5 against displace ment on the shank ofthe hook forward of the loop. The two side flaps 8-8 may be provided with shoulders 99 which may slightly overlap the opposite sides of the clip as to hold the sides of the clip when the latter are closed in. 10 is a lug or tongue extending rearwardly from the base of the cli a, the function of which is to wrap around the rear end or bend of the spring s so as to hold the same in place, as seen in Figs. 5 and 6. In assembling the device, the wire hook and eye member and the clip are first secured togctl1er,the sides 66 being turned down around the wire of the shank as shown in Fig. 4 and the flaps 8-8 being wrapped around the wire of the loop at opposite sides of said shank. The spring at is then applied. the short hooked end i being slid into the pocket formed by the recess 7, the long end of the spring being slipped under the bill of the book. The lug 10 is then bent aroundthe rear end of the spring so as to hold the same in its operative position. If for any reason it should be desirable to replace the spring, the lug 10 may be bent back and the spring removed and a new one inserted, whereupon the lug would again be bent down. If desired, the sides 66 at the rear outer edges may be pro vided with ofiset lugs 11-11 which may serve as guides to keep the springl in alinement with the hook bill as shown. By makingthe hook and loop integral, or in onepiece, great economies are effected, since the same may be made of one contlnuous length of wire bent by suitable automatic ma-v chinery into the desired final form, after which the spring and clip may be quickly attached thereto so as to produce the finished article.
While I haveshown my improved snap hook in'its preferred form, it should be understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the particular arrangement, design or proportions herein'illustrated, since the same may be modified in a variety of ways without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A snap hook comprising a one-piece hook and loop member, the loopextending transversely to the plane of the hook shank, a blade spring bent near-its rear end and hooked around. that part of the loop in line with said shank,a clip extending around said shank forward of said loop, the rear end of said spring projecting into the space between said clip and the hook shank, a lug projecting rearwardly from said hook to hold said spring in place, means projecting 1 rearwardly from the opposite corners of the baseot the clio to wra around the ad'acent parts of the loop for the purpose described,
and spring guarding means carried by said clip to hold said spring in operatire allneinent with the hook.
3. A snap hook comprisinga one-piece,
hook and loop member, the loop extending transversely to the plane of the hook shank, a blade spring bent near its rear end and hooked around that part of the loop in line with said shank, a clip extending around said shank torn rd of said loop, the rear end of said spring projecting into the space between said clip and the hook shank, a lug projecting rearwardly from said clip to hold said spring in place, and means projecting rearwardly from the opposite corners .01: the base of the clip and extending around the adjacent parts of the loop and overstanding the opposite sides or the clip at the inner end V of the latterto reinforce the latter.
