Be it known that l, Gnonen Encan lvLLxX- riem), by occupation machinist, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Greneral Hospital, Rockhampton, in the State of Queensland, Commonwealth of Australia, ha ve invented new and useful improvements in improved iVoodworking-lvlachines, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to an improved wood working machine and refers more especially to a machine for producing or dressing a number of woodv forms such as table legs and the like of either square, oblong or octagonal or other shape from blanks. The machine may also be adapted to produce circular a'rchitraves moldings and the like and at the same time do the smoothing and finishing.
The objectof this invention is to provide a machine in which a number of wood forms of any desired angular shape in cross section may be produced and finished E at the one time with greater facility and less labor and expense'than can be done at present.
l accomplish these objects by providing a machine which comprises a revolving carrier which supports a number of wooden blanks upon its periphery, a series of saws for making the necessarj7 cuts in the blanks, a series f revolving cutters for facing and dressing the said blanks, rotating mandrels of the required shape suitably faced with sand or powdered glass for smoothing, revolving brushes for finishing off, and also revolving grinders for sharpening the aforesaid cutter. also provide an attachment to this machine whereby it may be adapted for producing circular architraves moldings and the like which comprises means for clamping a circular wooden blank upon the face of one of the disks of the aforesaid carriers in conjunction with rotating cutters of the required shape with corresponding finishing tools.

Each section or segment of the left side member has its supporting arms 8 hinged at 9 (see Fig. e) in order to allow each section to be swung back or opened as shown by dotted lines Fig. 3 to enable the whole periphery of the carrier to'be lilled with the blanks A. These carrier members 7 are furnished with rabbeted rims or ledges 10 adapted to support the wood blanks while each section ot' the left side carrier member is locked about the wood blanks A by draw rods which extend through each carrier member and furnished with turn buckles 12 and pivoted locking cams 13 as shownrthus firmly clamping the'wood blanks endwise between the vertical portions ot the rims of the carrier. The wood blanks A are' further secured endwise in posit-ion between the carrier rims by projecting steel band blades or the like 14k (see Fig. 7) attached to cleats or the like 15 which in turn are attached to the vertical portions oi the rims of the carriers 7 by suoli as screws. These proj ecting band blades 14 are arranged in concentric rings on the face' ot' the right side carrier member and also extend the full length of each section of the left side carrier 7 and are adapt-ed to be forced into the ends of the wood blanks when the carriers 7 are closed or drawn vtogether by the draw rods 11 thus the whole or any portion 01"' the periphery ofthe rabbeted portion of the rim 10 can be filled with the wood blanks A which are firmly held in position endwise by the aforesaid projecting` band blades 14e. ln order t0 enable octagonal wood forms to be milled angular shaped wood blocks 10a are secured to the rabbeted rims 10 and the wood blanks A supported between the said blocks 10a as shown in Fig. S. To prevent the wood blanks sagging at the center, a central support or carrier 16 is mounted on the mainA spindle 2 and furnished with a wood rim 17 upon which the wood blanks A are supported as shown in Figs. 2 and 8. This central carrier 16 is made preferably in halves in order that it can be readily remoif'ed from the main shaft :2 when it is to be used tor producing circular architraves as will be hereinafter described.
. rllhe circular' saws B which are adapted to produce the necessary cuts in the wood blanks in rder to t'acilitad'e the operation 0i. the knives or tools G and to remove 'the surplus portion of the cut are mounted on a spindle 18 carried in bearings 19 mounted on the machine trame, the said saws C being held in the desired position on the spindle 18 between distance pieces or sleevesQO and a locking nut- 21. rlhe swivel bearings 19 are supported on sliding brackets 22 mounted on the stepped portion oit the machine trame and are capable oit adjustment by the screw rods 23 one end of cachot' `which passes through a tapped lug 2e'- projecting down from each bracket 22 andthe outer ends of said screws are furnished with sprocket wheels 25 having a connecting` chain 26 operated by the hand wheel 27 through the medium of the sprocket pinion 27a. lhus the saws canbe moved to or trom the wood blanks A7 while Vthe bearings 19 being swiveled vertically enable one end olf the saw spindle 18 to be placed slightly in advance of the other end accordingv to the cuts desired to be formed in the wood blanks A and to remove the surplus portion of the same.
'l` he cutters or forming tools C which are oit the desired shape according to the form to be produced, are mounted on holders 28 (see l? and 6) having dove rail extension pieces 29 adapted to titvin dovetail slots 30 formed in a circular revolving head piece or carrier 31 and held in position by set screws 32. rlhese cutter heads or carriers 81 are securely mounted on a transverse spindle at the requisite distance apart by set screws 33a'. The spindle 33 is mounted in bearings 34, that upon the right side having a dove tail base 35 adapted to slide in a similar shaped groove or slot 36 v'formed m the machine aine 1 and held in position by bolts 37. ,The dove tail bases 35 and slots 36 enable the bearing on the right side to be readily renioif'ed when it is desired to remove or replace the circular cutter heads 31 and knife holders 2S.
The sander or nishing tool D is in the form or" a suitable mandrel made from suitable composition molded to `the desired shape or pattern and faced with sand or powdered glass. This sander ori'inishing tool D is situated at the side ofthe machine to the cutters as shownand mounted on a spindle 37 carried in adjustable bearings 88 which can be adjusted by the screw rods 559 and hand wheel 40, the bearing brackets 38 being mounted upon a slide 41 adapt-ed to move in a suitable slot 42 in the machine frame as shown in Fig. 2. The sander D is adjustably mounted upon the spindle 37 by a collar 43 at one end and a lock nut 44 at the other end. rIhe revolving brushes E are formed with projecting bristles or steel wire secured to a Wooden base securely mounted on a transverse spindle 45 carried iu adjustable bearings 4-5 which are capable of being readily adjusted in order to set the brush E at the proper position.
The grinder F which comprises an emery wheel is supported on an adjustable spindle 47 above the cutting tools C as shown in Fig. 1 and is adapted to be utilized to grind the cutters C without having to remove the same from the machine. The said grinder is mounted on a sleeve 48 which is held in position with set screws 49 engaging a longitudinal slot 50 in the spindle 47 to enable the said grinder to be rotated and at the same time be moved into engagement with the cutters C by hand, for this purpose a loose collar 51 is mounted on the aforesaid sleeve 48 and prevented from moving longitudinally thereon by a pin or screw 52 fitting into an annular' recess 53 in the sleeve 48.
To enable the grinder F to be placed at any desired angle to grind the cutters C the spindle 47 is made in two lengths connected together by a universal joint 54, and mounted at one end in a bearing 55 formed at the top of a pivoted telescopic standard 5G pivoted to the machine frame and capable of adjustment to suit the height of the spindle 47 and angle of the grinder F. The other end of the said spindle 47 is mounted in ad justable bearings 57 mounted on a suitable frame 58 which is hinged at 59 to the machine franie 1 as shown in Figs. 9 and 10. '.lhis frame 58 can be set at the desired angle by a screwed spindle (50 which passes through a tapped hole in a swivel block or like 61 pivoted at 62 to the frame 58 as shown. and operated by the hand wheel 637 the said screw spindle being adapted to slide in a vertical slot 64 in the machine frame 1 and held in working position therein by convex collars (35 arranged one at either side of the frame 1 as shown.
ln order to prevent the wood blanks A chattering while being operated upon by the cutters C see Fig. 12) a friction roller (S6 shod with india rubber or the like is mounted on a pivoted arm 67 and adapted to bear against the wood blanks A and force same against. the rim 17 of the central carrier 18 by means of a suitable weight 38 and flexible connection 69, while to adjust the po tion of the said roller 66 a set screw 70 is adapted to bear against the underside of the machine frame.
ja somewhat similar pressure roller 71 adapted to bear against the wood blanks A is arranged in close proximity to the circular saws B and mounted on a pivot-ed arm 72 and operated by a flexible connection 73 and weight 74 and regulated by an adjusting screw 75 (Fig. 12).
Referring to Fig. 12 which is a. diagrammatic view of the driving gear-100 is the main driving shaft driven from any suitable motive power, 101 the counter shaft driven from the main shaft 100 by the belt 1027 this counter shaft 101 is adapted to operate the carriers 7 at different speeds, and for the purpose of a high speed the said shaft 101 is furnished with a sprocket pinion 103 operating a sprocket wheel 104 mounted on Vthe main shaft 2 of the machine by the chain 105, a sliding clutch 106 (Fig. 2) being mounted on the said machine shaft in'order that the sprocket wheel 104 may be put in or out of gear with the counter shaft 101, the usual clutch lever being employed.
For the purpose of a slow speed drive for the carriers7 a worm wheel 107 is loosely mounted on the shaft 2 and adapted to gear with a worm 108 carried on a spindle 109 which is mounted iu bearings 110 secured to the upper ends of adjustable vertical rods 111 passing through guide blocks 112 secured to the machine frame, the position of the worm spindle 109 being adjusted by the set screws 113 passing through the lugs 114 and locked in such position by the studs 115 in the guides 112. 0n the outer end of the worm spindle 109 is a loose driving pulley 11G which is driven from a pulley 117 on the counter shaft 101 by the belt 118.
The pulley 116 on the worin spindle 109 is furnished with a suitable friction clutch adapted to receive ythe sliding friction clutch member 119 which is operated by the levers and rods 12 (See Figs. 1 and 2.) Thus it will be understood that the machine can be driven at either a comparatively high or low speed as desired.
In order to take up the slack of the sprocket chain 105 when the machine shaft 2 is moved along the frame 1 in order to bring the milled forms ik into contact with `the sander D an idle sprocket pinion 121 is provided mounted on the end of a pivoted lever 122 on the other end of which is an adjustable weight 123 adapted to cause the sprocket pinion 121 to take up the slack in the chain.
The revolving saw spindle 18 is driven from a counter shaft 124 by the belt 125 which passes about suitable tension pulleys 126 mounted on a hinged arm 127. This counter shaft 124 receives motion from the driven shaft 100 by the belt 128.
The cutting tool spindle 33 is driven from a separate counter shaft 129 by a belt 130 which also passes about tension pulleys 131 mount-ed on a hinged arm 132. rlhis counter shaft. 1.2.9 is also driven from the main drive-n shaft 100 at the desired speed by the belt 133 as shown.
The sander spindle 37 is driven by a 'belt 134 from a shaft the said belt passing about tension pulleys 136, this shaft 135 being driven Iroiu the inain driven shaft 10Q by the belt 13T.
The reif'olving brush spindle is also driven from the shaft 135 by the belt 138 which passes about idle or tension pulleys 139.
it will be understood that the various shafts are so geared to the main shaft 100 that tbe required speed is obtained for the tools.
The inode of operation is as follows The wood blanks ii say of square section and of the requisite lengtl'i are placed in position upon the peripheries of the rabbeted portions-1() of rims of the carriers 7 and tirmly locked by the cams 13. The carriers T are set in motion to the speed desired; then the revolving saivs lil are brought into operation by the hand Wheel 27 in order that the necessary transverse cuts or incisions may be formed in the blanks A. After this operation the saws i3 are Withdrawn and the carriers 7 brought for fard by moving the bearings 3 by operating the hand Wheel G until the Wood blanks A come into contact with the cutting tools C and the blanks milled to the form desired on the one face.
The bearings 3 are then moved in the opposite direction along the machine frame by the hand Wheel G until the carriers l are in the desire-d position for the Sanders or iinishing tools D and 'the brushes E to operate on the formed face of the blank.
The blanks A are then removed and replaced in position on the carriers in order that a, fresh face is exposed to be operated upon as before described.
in order to adapt the machine for producing circular architraves or the like, the central carrier 16 is removed from its position between the carriers 7 and secured in position on the main shaft 2 near its outer end as shown in Fig. 1e and attached to the arms of the said carrier is an annular ring 1&8 made preferably7 of Wood and built up as shown and to which is suitably attached the circular Wood blank 149 of such a shape in section to correspond with the architrave to be formed.
F or the purpose of operating upon the circular Wood blanks 14:9 an attachn'ient is provided Which comprises a pair of trunnions or shafts 150 rigidly mounted in the upper portion of pillars 151 and further supported about the center of their length by an adjustable hanger 152 and clamp 153 from the main shaft 2 (see Fig. 16).
The cutters or forming tools C are supported on circular heads or carriers conlessees structed as before described While the spindle `is `mounted in adjustable bearings 15ihaving dove tail bases 155 fitting in similar shaped grooves in a sliding block 15e mounted on the trunnions or stationary shafts and adapted to be held in any desired position thereon by such as set screws 157 While the position of the cutters C can be regulated by a rack 158 formed on the underside of the bearings 15st and gearing with a rack pinion 159 operated by the hand wheel 1GO. The cutters C may be formed having members so as to produce any form of architrave such as shown in section in iilig. 1e.
ln order to form the return bead of circular architrave such as shown in the drawii'igs a separate cutter C (Fig. 15) is mounted on the trunnions 150 in a similar inanner to the face cutters C but is adapted to operate at right angles to them as shown.
The sander D is also mounted in a similar manner to the cutters C and is capable of similar adjustment having the necessary rack 15S and pinion 159 operated by the hand Wheel 1GO.
l claim 5- 1. in a Wood working machine the combination of a frame, a revoluble carrier journaled on the frame and comprising a rigid section and a section having hinged segments, said sections having rabbeted peripheral portions adapted to receive Wood blanks of polygonal cross section, rods having cam elements connecting said rigid and segmented sections and adapted to hold the weer blanks on said sections, members cai'- ried by the segmented section adapted to penetrate the Wood blanks at the ends thereof and secure the same against displacement, saws and cutters for acting on the Wood blanks, and means for moving the carrier to bring the blanks to engage saitL saws and cutters, substantially as described.
