Description

J. H. BRUCE.A COAL CAR COVER.
APPucATlon man JUNE 12. 1911,
Paten Mar. 5, 1918,
ATTOR N EY JOHN H. BRUCE, 0F WEET-memoir, IntimiscoAL-oan covnn.
Application filed .Tune 12, 1917. Serial No. 174,315.
To all who/m it may concer/ni Be it known that l, JOHN H. BnUona citi-` zen of the United States, residing at Whit-` tington, inthe county of Franklin and State of Illinois, have invented certain Vnew and useful Improvements in Coal-Cal' Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to coal carrcovers and has as its primary object the provision of a cov-er which will prevent the coal from falling from the car, prevent it from being stolen and which will protect it from'the weather.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a cover of this character which will entirely inclose the contents of the car and thereby retain the saineV in an intact condition. V
Janother important object is to provide a cover for open cars and the like which is ieng-itudinally movable over the car so that the car may be loaded from either end of the same.
Still another object 0f my present invention is to provide a cover of this character which is absolutely burglar proof. v
An additional general object resides in the provision of a Cover having the .above features which may be readily adjusted to inclose the contents of the car, which consists of few parts that may be readily assembled and disassembled, which may be used in connection with any open type of car or receptacle, and which may be manu-v factured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.
Other objects and advantages will be fully s apparent from the following detailed description and accompanyingk drawing, wherein one embodiment of the invention is illustrated. I
The invention consists of combinations', constructions, arrangements and operations which will be hereinafter fully set forth and the inventive features will be explicity recited in the subjoined claims.
On the drawing,
Figure lshows a side elevation of the body of an open coal car or the like having my improved cover mounted thereon, part of the cover and the car being broken away,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; part of the cover being broken away to show the interior of the car, and Y Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof.

meral 5. designates the body of an open carv suchA as, for instance, a coal car which includes side walls 6,andendwalls., Mounted in the car-body'and inclose proximity to-theendwallsf are partitions 8; which eXTA tend transversely across the cary andare of iaheight equal to the height of the end walls 7. Accommodated'between eachof thefpartitions 8 and the endwalls Zia-nd adapted forV vertical movement therebetween are; panels 9. These panels 9 have their side edges beveled as at l0, while-the upperV edge of each is fla-t. v i e.
Mounted in brackets lll disposedy adjacent and extending; outwardly from the saine are horizontally disposed guide rods Also mounted upon the upper edge of the side walls 6 atY their opposite extremity are brackets les which extend vertically. Guide rods l5 identical with the guide rods l2 eX,- tend longitudinally of the side walls 6 and above their upper transverse edges and are supported by the brackets 14.
The vnumeral lel designates a. movabley cover section which is preferably 'Ollfned fromV a plate of sheetrmetal possessing the necessary qualities. This cover section 16 includes divergent sidewalls 17 and' a top wall 1S which isperfectly flatl as clearly illustrated in the drawing. LongitudinalV extensions 1:9 entend from the lower longitudinal edge of each of the side wallsl? andl are formed with a laterally extending per` forated ear 20, at each end thereof, which re# ceives the guide rods l2 and is capableof longitudina-lv movement thereon.
A second section 2l which is constructed identical-'ly the same as the section 1,6v is mounted on the :guide rodsl and likey the.,
.Section 16, thisl Section is. adapted for Ylongitudinal movement onits respective guide rods. This latter section iS. not as wide asthe section 16 and it `will thus be Ythe upper ,edge of eachl of' the side walls 6.4
manifest that thesesections maybe telescoped. Owing to the sloping or divergent sides 1T of the sections, and the like `will be caused to run to the ground and not settle upon the sections. It should also be noted that the panels 10 are of such shape as to be snugly embraced by the sections when in operative position.
A keeper22 is mounted at the outer end of each of the sections and at the apex of the same which are adapted to receive hasps 23 carried by the panels 9. Locks 41, which may be or" any conventional type are adapted to be engaged in the hasps 23, and lock the sections and panels together. It Will be the cover sections shoved to the opposite endv and the car loaded from that end or merly covered by the telescoped sections.
rlhis embodiment of the invention is disclosed merely for the purpose of illustrating my rinventive idea, and I'Wish to here 'state that the invention can be carried out in constructions other than the one herein shown and specified, and that my limits of modification are only governed by the herewith appended claims. v Y
What is claimed is:
l. f he combination with an open top car body of a plurality of sliding panels carried thereby, V`and a plurality of telescoping sections arranged to close the open top oi' the body and adapted to be secured to said panels.
2. The combination With an open top vcar body of a plurality of telescoping sections movable'longitudinally along said top, and a plurality of sliding panels positioned at the opposite ends of said bodyto close the outer ends'of said sections, and fastening means for securing the panels and sections together. v
3. The combination With an open top car body, ,of a pair. of guide rods extending along the opposite sides of said body, a second pair of guide rods extending along the Vupper edge of said sides, la sliding section provided with eyes adapted to be slidably mounted on said lirst mentioned rods, and
a ysecond section likewise provided, with eyes adapted to vbe slidably engaged with said last mentioned guide rods and arranged to telescope Within said first section. Y
, 4l. The combination with an uncovered conveyance body, pairs of guide rods mounti ed on the body, one pair ofV guide rods being disposed over the others, telescopic cover sections slidably mounted on the guide rods, and panels adapted to close one end of each copies of this patent may be obtained for of the sections, and locks forV locking the sections and panels together.
5. The combination with a coverless conveyance body, of a plurality of telescoping cover sections mounted thereon, each of said sections including divergent side Walls, vertically movable end panels mounted at the, transverse ends of the conveyance adapted to be snugly received by the sectionsand means orlocking nthe"`sections Vand panels together.v l v 6. The combination With a topless coni veyance body, ot guide rod mounted upon each side'oi: the body and extending longitudinally thereof, a second guide rod disposed abore each "of the iirst mentioned guide rods and also extending longitudinally of tlie'body, a cover section loiigitu- 'dinally adjustable on the vfirst mentionedV guide rods, a second cover section longitudinally adJustable on the second mentioned guide rods, and a panel for closing the outer end of each of the sections.
7; The combination With a conveyance body including side Walls and end Walls, of vertical partitions mounted in the'body adjacent each of the transverse ivalls and eX- tending transversely Vacross the body, a panel vertically movable between each 'of the partitions and the adjacent transverse Wall orp the body, a` plurality of telescopic cover sections overlying a car body, and means for locking the panels and cover section together. 4 S. rlhe combination with a topless conveyance body, oi' a horizontal guide rod mounted upon each side thereof, a second hori- Zontal guide rod mounted above eachuof the first mentioned guide rods, a plurality of telescopic sections, each comprising aV fiat top Wall and divergent side Walls, perforated ears carried by one of the sections and slidably engaged with the loivermost guide Y rods, ears alsocarried by the other section and slidably engagedvv'ith the uppermost guide rods, and an end panel mounted at each end ,oiu the conveyance adapted to'closev one end oli 'each olf the cover sections.
In testimony whereof l.'V affix my signature in presence oltivo Witnesses.
Y JOHN H. BRUCE.
