STREET-SIGNAL.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ROBER'I"; soN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of'Madison,iin the county of Dane and State of lViscon'sin, have invented certa n new and useful Improvements in Street- Signals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. 1 h
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in street or station indicators for streetcars or oth'er vehicles.v
It is in general the object of the present invention to s mplify the structure and improve the. eiliciency' of indicators 7 of this nature, and it is more particularly an object to provide such an indicator VWlIlCh'lS adapted foractuation bythe conductor of the car or other authorized .perSOn whereby to eliminate the mass of mechan sm usuallyassociated. with automatic actuations of the A more specific obj ect'resides in'the provision ofan indicator embodying a pair of rolls and a web wound'thereon, wherein the rolls may be successively wound and=iin wound to properly display the names 7 of streets or stations on: street car oriother routes wherein the car runs hack and forth oventhesainepath. It is in this connection further an object. to provide an "arrangement for rewinding the web whereby the indicator: may be used on routes wherein the car makes a 'continuousloop. V I
A further objectreside's in ltheprovision of an arrangement permitting amost ready removal and replacement of the rolls and web. r 1
With the above andother objects'and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in; the novel combination, formation and arrangement. of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the-appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevational View. of an indicator device embodying my invention, with the upper portion of the casing broken 7 away. i
Fig; 2 is a vertical sectional view of an indicator device, as indicated by the line 22 of Fig. l. V
Referring now" more particularly to the a preferably rectangular casing Si-including 7 Specification of Letters Patent.
V Patented;1\Iar.5;,1918; ApplicationfiledJ'anuary13, 19 17. seriaina 4a15n H T l with a windowi through which desired symbols on a web 8 within the casing nay be selectively displayed;
The casing s mounted in a convenient position by-the engagement of anofi-setde pending tongue 8on its back wall in a socket block 9 secured to a zsuitable support. In
practice one of the socket'bloc'ks is provided at e-ach end of a car and thus the casing may be changed from end to end of thecar upon completion of a run. r g V The web 8 is mounted upon apair of rollers 10 and for 'journally :supporting these roller in the upper and lower portions respectively, of the casing journal sleeves '11 are provided in the end wall of the casing and slidably receive pintles 12 on corresponding endsof the rollers i'llhe jections 13 which engage in the socketed other ends oftlie rollers carry squaredgpi-oends of stub shafts 14 journaledin sleeves r steps, andsaid web is held adjacentthe window by rollers 18 extending across the front portion .of: the casing immediately in wardly of the door, By shifting the rollers l to disengage the progectioiis j13I-fromthcf sockets of vthe stub shaftsfitgis:tlius possible to entirely -detachfthe roller 'andgweb f j whereby a fresh-web may be inserted. 1T0;
normally hold the rollers against displace mentand at the same time toiplfovide-a I friction detent preventing accidental move ment of the rollers; the r-pintle ends have secured theretorelativelyshort coil springs :19 which bear againstzzs'aid-:pintleends; and against the adjacent end wall of they casing;
For selectively. actuating the ratchet wheels, a pair of hell cranks 20 are mounted on pivots 21 disposed inwardly of the 7 wheels and are provided with oppositely extending arms to which are pivoted 'paw1 22 resting upon the seriesof' ratchet pins 17 and normally held in retracted position by Q springs 23 secured to the other armsof the-- bellcranks. Also lo sely 'pi t ly se r d l V to the other arms of the leversare the'arma accompanying drawings, there is provided tures 24 of a pair-of Opp ed solenoid 25,
V and from each of these solenoids, "wires'26i extendato an individual plug socket2'i.
It is noted that in the retracted position of each pawl its toothlies outwardly of the rotative path of the. corresponding series of ratchet pins 17 and thus the pawldoes swardly of the rotative path of said: ratchet wheel wherebythe same may be free to rotate independently of said pawl 's'ubstan' not interfere with independent movement of the wheel in either direction, conse-; quently upon actuating either of the pawls,
the web may be rotated insucces'sive steps in either direction. Thus in a route wherein the car moves back and forth over the same tracks,-it is merely necessary to alternately actuate the magnets in successive steps to procure a continuous indicating actuation of the web. In some instances,ho'wever, it may be desired touse the indicator on a route wherein the car makes a complete loop and.
in such instances the web would befrewound onone of the rollers by hand, it being noted of my invention,
ositively 1 stations or streets along a route.
that one of the stub shafts 14 is provided a with projecting squared ends for a key memher for efiecting such rewinding.
The circuit for actuating a selective solenoid 25 includes a suitable source of power 28', a plug 29 adapted to engage selectively in one of the sockets 27 and a switch 30 under the control of the conductor or other operator. One of these circuits is preferably disposed at each end of the car, and its plug 29 is associated with a desired solenoid socket 27 when the'cir cuit is utilized. V An exceedingly simple and conveniently operated device has thus been provided for indicating the various successive .NVhile I have shown and described a preferred form it is obvious that to meet various conditions of use differences in structure may be resorted to without departing in any manner frcmthe spirit of the in- Vention asinterpretedby the accompanying claims. I
"What is claimedisz '7 Y 1. In an'indicator, the combination with V a web carrying roll, of a ratchet wheel carried,th,ereby, a pivoted bell crank having a j the "free end of one arm disposed adjacent the uppermost tooth of said ratchet wheel,
a pawl having one end pivotedto the end of saidarm: and its :outer freeend formed with can at on: man may obtained for tially as described.
2. In a device of the combination with a casing and a roll therein having a web wound therearound, of a ratchet wheel carried by the rollat one end, a bell crank pivoted to the casing ber if I low theaxis of said roll and having one arm extending upwardly and adjacent said I B5 otedto-the end of said arm of the bell crank and passing over the ratchet wheel, said" ratchet wheel, a pawl having one end pivpawl having its free end normally held out wheel and formed with a toothed portion,
the character described,
wardly of the rotative path of the ratchet 5 j m most teeth of the ratchet wheel, said ratchet;
wheel being free to rotate independently of said pawl, a solenoid'secured tothe rear wall of the casing, an armature slidably mounted" i in said solenoid and having its outer enfd' pivotally secured in an elongated o i 1 formed in the'other arm ofis'aid bell crank; near the end thereof and adaptedhupon energization of said, solenoid to 'draw said' pawl inwardly'to thus bring said toothed portion in engagement with the teethofthe o ratchet wheel to advance the same, and means engaging the endo'f said other arm of" the bellcrank wherebyto return the toothed V portion of said pawl toits normal position outwardly of the ratchet teeth,substantially" as described; a v v In testimony that I claim-the foregoing I'- have hereunto setmy hand at Madison, in; j the county of Dane and Stateo'f Wisconsin,
