LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
' Speccationof Letters Eatent.
Patented Feb. 26, 1218..
Application led May 5, 19,16.` Serial No. 95,588.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BYsTnOM, a citizenof the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Coolrand `,State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which corresponding numerals of reference in the different ligures indicate like parts. y
rlhe object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and effective loose-leaf binder which shall be so constructed as to enable loose leaves to be clasped or released by the binding elements by means of an actuating screw connected therewith. 1 accomplish said object in the manner and by the means hereinafter more particularly described andl definitely pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing Figure 1, is an inner face view of the frame portion or hinged clamping members,
Fig. 2, is a section taken upon the line 2, Fig. 1, viewed in the direction of the arrow there shown, the cover and supplemental back member being shown connected therewith.
Fig. 3, is a section taken upon the line 3, Fig. 1, viewed in the direction of the arrow there shown, the cover portion being omitted, and
Fig. d, is an enlarged section in detail, taken upon the line 4t, Fig.` 1, viewed in the direction of the arrow there shown.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates generally the main clamping frame consisting of counterpart clamping members having back portions 2 and 3 and clamping plates or flanges L1 and 5, bent in elbow form in cross section at a predetermined angle thereto, preferably less than a right angle, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 8. The parts 2 and 3 are hinged together throughout their length, as shown at 5a. A .supplemental back portion 6, formed from sheet metal, is provided with flanges 7 7 the edges of which are arranged to bear against the rear surfaces of the parts 2 and 3 respectively. Said parts 2 and 3 are provided with openings or perforations 8, Fig. 1, adapted to receive fingers or projections 9, formed upon the edges of the anges 7 for the purpose of positioning or maintaining the supplemental baclr 6 in proper relation to the main or clamping frame 1. The parts 2 and are cut away at 10, preferably midway between their ends, as shown in Figs. 1, 3` and f1, to receive a stirrup or screwinceiving member 11 having parallel parts l2 bored to receive the hinge rods 13, Figs. 1 and 4, of the hinge which connects the parts 2 and 3, upon which rod. said stirrup is pivoted. rl`he cross bar of said stirrup is bored in the plane of the bores of the members or arms 12 but Vat right angles thereto, which bore is threaded to receive an adjusting screw llhhaving a head 15, swiveled in a bearing formed in a bearingplate 16, attached by means of rivets 17, or otherwise to the part 6. Said swiveled head is provided with a socket 18, for the reception of a key 19, Fig. 1l. An opening 20, in the back 6, enables the key to be inserted within the socket. The frame members, to-
- gether vwith the supplemental back are provided with a cover 21, Fig. 2, of any approved construction which cover portion is passed around the baclr and aids to secure the latter inplace. Curved prongs 22, 23,
are provided to serve as stops for the edges of the leaves 24:, to be bound.
When the leaves are inserted with their edges against the stops the screw 14: is turned so as to draw the stirrup or swiveled member toward the back 6. Each of the clamping members acts like an elbow lever with the edge of the ilange 7 as its fulcrum, thereby causing the parts l and 5 to be forced toward each-other and clamped upon the intervening leaves, while the hinge is drawn toward the rigidV back member 6. ln this way any number of Aleaves from a comparatively few to as many as may be received between the parts a and 5, maybe clamped. A reversal of the screw will serve to release the leaves.
l do not wish to be limited to the construction shown, inasmuch as it may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A 'loose-leaf binder, comprising, in combination, clamping members elbowshaped in cross section, said members having parallel clamping flanges and back portions,
member spacedA apart from said back portions With langes arranges to bear against the rear 'outer portions of the latter, a screw threaded member jointedly attached to said hinge and a screw sWiveled in said back member and in operative engagement With said screw threaded member for actuating said clamping members'. v Y.
2. Avloose-leaf binder having clamping members for holding leaves between them, said members being `bent to form backp'ortions'hingeclL together'upon a longitudinal anis,V a supplementalbackmember having' forwardly extended flangesl arranged to Gopies'o! this patentrmay'be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner 'Washingtom D. C.
bear against the back portions of said ela1nping members in planes upon opposite sides ot and parallel to said hinge and a swiveled screw for connecting said supplemental back member with said hinge to move the latter toward and from said back member.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this speeieation, in the presence of two subsoribing Witnesses, this third day of May,
JOHN BYSTROM. Witnesses:
