Specification r Letters Patent. pmnm .9 6, m
Application filed January 31, 1917. Serial No. 145,756.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
ing at Thetford Mines, in the Province of Quebecand Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in RazonHoning Implements, of which the follow1ng1s a specification.
This invention relates to a razor honing implement and the primary object is toprovide a device for facilitating the proper motion lmparted to a razor when the same 1S being sharpened so that an even and uniform pressure will be applied to the blade while it is being moved across the hone.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a razor honing implement having a clip adapted to receive a reciprocatory motion and pivotally mounted whereby the sweep or length of the are through which the razor is moved may be varied according to the length of the hone employed.
As another object of the invention the device includes the provision of resilient means associated with the pivot connection of the swinging clip whereby an even pressure may be maintainednpon the edge of the razor blade when the latter is in contact withtlie surface of the hone.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for fastening the hone at any desired angle upon the supporting base.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a razor honing implement which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
Fora full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference isto be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view, the razor being shown in diagram. v
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section the razor being removed.
Referring to .the drawing, wherein is illustrated the'preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the supporting plate 1 is of substantially rectangular formation and includes a projection 2 extending from the rear edge of the supporting plate." The upper surface of the supporting plate 1 of a size sufficient to conveniently receive an ordinary razor hone designated by the character A. For retaining the hone in proper position upon the supporting base, I have provided a pair of retaining elements 3 each of which is adapted to contact with one longitudinal edge of the hone. Each retaining elementconsists of a relatively long strip 4-. engaging the edge of the hone while intermediate the .ends o-f-the strip 4:;the same is integrally connected to a flange 5 through which a fastening screw. 6 is projected and extended into the base 1 for. securely holding the retaining elements. the strip the same is provided with right angularly extending flanges 7 for bracing the ends of the strip. It will. be obvious that these retaining elements may be-swung upon the screws 6 for holding the strips t at an angle whereby the hone A may be mounted upon the base at an. angle for 013- taining a greater bearing surface for the edge of the razor blade while the same is having diametrically opposite flanges 9 through which fastening screws are extended for fastening the disk to the extension 2. As clearly shown. by Fig. 2 of the drawing, the disk 8 raised above the plane of the base 1 to provide a space beneath the disk in which the flange 9 of a rotatable cylinder 10 is received. The cylinder 10 is projected upwardly through the central opening in the disk and is open at its top. Oppositely disposed vertical slots are provided in thecylinder and the shank 11 of a spring clip 12 is disposed within the slots. The shank 11 extends considerably beyond the cylinder and is provided at its terminal. with a knob 13. The spring clip 12 consists of a cylindrical sleeve having a longitudinal slot 1% which communicates with a circumferentially extending slot 15 formed adjacent the At each end of wall of the elo'sedend is a coil tension spring '16 which has its'opposite end provided with a loop 17 which receives the shank 11.
After placing the'razor blade in the clip '12, it is merely necessary to grasp the knob 13 and imparta 'reciprocatory movement to the shank 11, the cylinder 10 rotating and acting as a pivot for the clip; The spring,
' by'virtue of its action on the shank 11, will Y which i embody the preferred form.
S1116 it .to be understood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction maintain an even pressure on the edge of the razor blade so that the operator need not press at' all upon the knob 13.
7 v If desired the hone may be turned to a difierent angle to obtain a greater sweep for the blade.
' By virtue of theloop around the shank 11 and the cylindrical formation of the clip the blade may be easily turned over so that 'bothsides ma be ooerated ujonothe surface of the hone.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable razor honing implement has been provided, the details of I de in theb'ase at one side of and intermediate the ends'of the said hone, the said cylinder having vertically extending slots, ablade holdingclip provided with a shank adapt- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ed to extend through the said slots, at resilient means arranged in the cylinder and fixed thereto and connected with the said shank for exerting a pressure downwardly of the clip against the said hone.
2. A razor honing implement comprising the combination with av hone, of gripping means for receiving the razor blade and eX- tending across the face of the hone, the said means including a shank projecting beyond the edge of the hone, a rotatable cylinder provided with slots for receiving the said shank, and coil spring mounted in the cylinder and including a loop encircling the said shank, whereby the pressure of the clip on the said hone may be evenly maintained during the reciprocation of the clip.
8. A razor honing implement comprising, the combination with a razor hone, of a base, a raised disk mounted upon the base and having a central opening, a rotatable cylinder extending through the opening in the raised disk and provided. with an annular flange engaging the bottom oil. the said disk, :1. clip carried by the cylinder and engaged with the said razor, the said cylinder having slots, and the said clip including a shank received in the said slots, and a tension'spring carried by the cylinder and fastened to the said shank.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
