g; `Be 1t known that I, WILLIAM H. WINTER- nowo, residing 1n the city of Montreal, Prov ;ince, 0.tQuebec, vDominion of Canada, have in` f;ented certain= new and useful Improvements.fi11l)raft-Gear Carriers for Railway- Locoinotives; an'dl' dohereby declare that .the following isY a full, clear, and exact description' thereof.A
ll/,ly limfentlon has for its 4object to adapt the usual draft gear of railway locomotives to 'be ,removedand replaced at will without dismemberment of the gear -propergand it maybe-'said bri'eiy'to consist of ay combinedl footplate and `draft-gear-receptaeleV rigidlysecured between the ends of the frame other rigid parts' at the front and rear et the locomotive,.and readily removablemeans -:serving tolock the draft gear proper Within .the receptacle, theiwhole being so constructed and arranged that the drat-gearfproper may be removed fromorinserted' into-the recep a For full comprehension, however, of my invention "refere'ncey must be had to the ac companyingr drawings forming a part of tl specification, in Which' imilar re "er characters indicate thesame parte., wherein 'g Figure 1 is a part plan View and part hori-- zontal section of my combined foot plate and draw' vgear receptacle.
Fig. 2 is a part elevation, part vertical sec- I tional View ther *15, section beingr frequentary and'take'n on line B B of Fig. 1.

he principal member of my invention consists of a combined footplate and draftgear-receptacle comprising a casting 2. This receptacle is formed with a longitudinal chamber 5 of rectangular cross-section, and the forw end of the member is extended in; depth bylboth upward and downward extensions 7 and B respectively, as shown in Fig., the entire length of the member being extended laterally in both directionsas at 9 UNTTED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.

and 1U respectively, reinforced at its thickN .cned forward end by top webs l2, and a web lat about midway the depth of the casting, each lateral extension presenting a side-I bar 16 adapted to bear upon the locomotive frame and having. a vertically disposed 'shoulder Il adapted to engage a shoulder on such frame. Theeasting is secured to the locomotive lframe by bolts 'which pass through `the side oars 1G, the framey 3 and brackets lf? located on the opposite sides of he latter in transverse alinement with the casting; The rear end of the carrier is cast with a pair of relatively heavy a reinforcement against which the rear ower buts when the draft spring come sed and, in addition, accommodating the ne., .il yoke or draft bar l5. The reinforced forward end, including its lateral extensions, constitutesl the ootplate, shocks upon which rear of the-webs thus correctly positioning thefooiplate relativelyto the frame of the locomotive: This reinforcedootplate pon tion of the casting is formed with `aree tangular openinglQO communicating with the -interior of the receptacle, and a pair of vertical openings 116 extend thrf; the top reinforced portion 7, the lo'we inforoed portion 8 having relatively diminished opening (20a) of realer-.gralar fr The draft gear proper is located within this carrier and for purposes of illustration` the well known Sessions type is shown. This type comprises a pair of follower plates, 2() and 21, slidably fitted within the chamber 5 one at the inner end thereof and lthe other adjacent to the openings 116. Between these follower plates are located the eide and center friction blocks 24, 9.5 and 26 respectively and spring barn` 23 within which the double coil draft spring is located, theshank beinn indicated. at 16 and yoke at 15.
' The draft. gearlv is adapted to' be inserted bodily into my combined oo'tplate and.
shan- 116, and t ey are reinforced by integral outward ,extensions 36, the up er ends thereof being formedwith heads 3 of the nature bars la .are transmitted through the shoulders s to AAfronI` follower latein close proximity to the .of-either 'a yoke, as shown in Fig. 4, uniting r lthe two wedges together and serving as a han'dle, or individual handles, as shown in Fig. 5. The portions 126 or the casting directly beneath a portion of the opening 116 (see Fig. 6) are made solid and with a flat top to have shoulders 127 on the wedges or pins rest thereon, while the openings are contiguous thereto and accommodate the lower diminishing endsl 136 of the wedges or pins. The handles extend above the top of the member and facilitate the withdrawal of the wedges or pins. lWhat I claim is as follows:
1. The combination with a pair of spaced engine frames, of a unitarymember comprising a foot-plate and draft-gear-carrying portions, means rigidly securing the said unitary member-between the englne frames with the outer face of the member and outer ends of the frames in the same transverse plane relatively to the engine, for the purpose set forth.
The combination with a pair of spaced engine frames having outwardly facing shoulders, of a unitary member comprising a foot-plate and draft-gear-carryin portions, suoli m'eans havin shoulders or engagement with the shoul ers on the frames, and means rigidly securing the said unitary member betweenjthe engine frames with the outer fabefftlte member 'and outer ends of `the framesy ih the arie transverse plane relatively to tlh'e enrlhe, for the purpose set forth. I i Y A 3. The combination witha pair of engine Iconstructed and arranged, to ceptaele for a draft-gear and t e said memparts and bolted thereto with its forward face flush with the forward ends of the, said engine frame-parts, such member being resent a reber having a substantially flush top and forward reinforcement and openings intersecting the receptacle, a draft-gear mountedV in said receptacle' and removable in the horizontal plane in. which it is located in serviee and means dropped' into the openings and constructed and arranged to retain the draft-gear in place, the said means being united by a yoke serving as a handle, for the. purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my namevto this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
