J. VAUDREUIL. CLOTHES HANGER SUPPORT. APPUCATlON FILED DEC.26. 191s.

JOHN VAUDREUIL, or M ILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
CLOTHES-HANGER SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
Application filed December 26, 1916. Serial No. 188,839.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN VAUDREUIL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes- Hanger Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in supports, more par ticularly of that type comprising a bar adapted for abutment of its ends against opposite walls of a closet, or against other supports and being extensible in nature whereby to procure a clamping action of said ends to retain the bar in place.
. It is the object of the present invention to provide a clothes hanger support, adapted more particularly for position transversely in a closet, and which is of such structure as to permit a minimum cost of manufacture consistent with sufficient strength and convenience of operation.
It is more particularly an object to provide a clothes hanger support comprising a wooden body bar, and to eliminate the necessity of providing and clamping plates at the ends of the support I purpose to provide a body bar of such relatively large diameter that the end thereof presents a sufficient area danger of marring to form an eflicient clamping face without the faceof the wall.
A still further object resides in the ,pro-' vision of a screw extension means for the support which may be associated with the body bar in a manner necessitating a minimum expenditure of labor and of metal.
\Vith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, arrangement and formation of parts more particularly hereinafter described'and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
The drawing shows a side view, partly in section of a clothes hanger support embodyin the present invention.
eferring now more particularly to the drawing, 5 designates the cylindrical wooden body bar of my support, which is of a diameter slightly less than the usual diameter of a clothes hanger hook whereby the outer end face of the bar affords an efficient face for coaction with one of the walls 6 of a closet.
For clampingly engaging the opposite wall 7 of the closet, a cylindrical section 8 is provided of a diameter equal to the diameter of the bar and secured in a recess 9 in the inner end of said block by means of a retaining plate 10 is a headed end 11 of a threaded bolt 12. This bolt extends into a bore 13 in the adjacent end ofthe body bar 5. To threadedly engage the bolt 12, an interiorly threaded sleeve 14 is provided and this sleeve is driven into the bore 13, and has longitudinal teeth 15 on its outer periphery whereby to provide for its non-rotative securement therein. The outer end of the bushing sleeve is provided with an out-turned annular flange seating against the end of the body bar whereby to limit inward movement of the sleeve, it being noted that the sleeve is equal in length to only a fraction of the length of the recess 13, whereby a considerable economy of metal is procured, it being appreciated that the bolt 12 and consequently the socket 13 would be of considerable length to compensate for desired clamping adjustment of the support.
Thus to secure the support in place it is positioned transversely of the walls 6 and 7 of the closets or any other desired supports and the bolt 12 is rotated to clampingly engage the outer ends of the body bar and block 8 against the walls or other supports, rotative movement of the bolt being facilitated by a transverse opening 17 in its outer end through which may be passed a large nail or other member affording a sufiicient leverage. I
To provide for a proper spacing of clothes hangers on the support, 7 whereby said hangers may not become massed in a manner preventing ready removal of desired hangers the body bar is provided at suitably spaced intervals with annular hook seating grooves 18.
By forming the body bar 5 and screw swivel block 8 of relatively large diameter I not only provide a maximum strength sufficient to meet any unusual strain of use, but I provide end faces for the block and body bar which are of sufficient area to form clamping faces engageable with the walls in a manner preventing injury thereto. Thus the necessity of providing clamping heads. on the ends of the support is obviated, and 11 find that the extra cost incidental to my rela-.
tively large diameter of the body block is material and labor am aware that extensible supporting rods of the present general nature have been heretofore contemplated, and I therefore do not claim broadly the idea of a support extensible in nature to clamp its ends against opposed walls.
y invention is directed more particularly to the described pecularities of structure which assume a vital importance in the cost of manufacture of the device in necessarily large quantities.
What is claimed:
A clothes hanger support comprising a wooden body bar, provided in one end with a longitudinal bore having its mouth counter-bored, an internally threaded sleeve positioned in the counter bore, gripping teeth on the periphery of the sleeve for retaining the same in fixed relation with the body bar, an annular flange at the outer end of the sleeve and abutting the end of the body bar, said sleeve being of lesser length than the bore, a bolt threadedly engaged in the sleeve and extensible into the bore, a cylindrical section forming a clamping bore and being provided with a recess for receiving a head formed upon said bolt, tion being of a diameter equal to that of the body bar, and means for retaining said bolt head in the recess of the cylindrical section substantially as described.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wiscons'in, in the presence of two witnesses.
