CIGARETTE-PACKAGE HOLDER AND ASH-TRAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb, 1%, EMS.
Application filed July 27, 1916. Serial No. 111,559.
1 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT DE MONT- I-UZIN and ALAN G. LYNN, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, and New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, respectively, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Package Holders and Ash- 'l'rays, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination cigarette package holder and ash tray, and has particular application to an article of this character by means of which a box or package of cigarettes or cigars may be socurely supported in convenient position to permit the ready removal of the individual cigarettes or cigars from the package, while at the same time the base of the article, in addition to forming a broad, wide and stable support for the holder. also constitutes a tray for the reception of ashes.
In the present instance we propose to provide an article of this type embodying a base tray carrying a standard or support upon which is mounted a holder for the cigarette package, this holder being adapted to embrace the package in such manner as to hold the latter againstlateral shifting movements while atthe'satne time such holder is provided with means for maintaining the top end of the package elevated above the top end of the holder thus enabling the individual cigarettes or cigars to be conveniently withdrawn-from the package.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the package holder" is preferably formed from a single plate or sheet of metal bent to provide a pair of opposing flanged walls between which the package is clamped or gripped, said opposing walls being connected at their lower portions through the medium of an integral bottom wall to which is attached a raised base block upon which the lower end of the package is adapted to rest and by means of which block the upper end of the package will be elevated above the top end of the holder.
Furthermore it is our purpose to provide a package holder equipped with a frame c 0- cperating with a wall of the holder to v1sually support a sheet, such as a calendar, advertising card, or the like.
Another object of the invention is the pro Vision of the cigarette package holder and ash tray which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, etliciency and convenience, and which embodies but relatively few parts, may be manufactured and marketed at comparatively low cost.
With the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in view, our invention consistsjn the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and fall- 111 within the scope of the appended claims.
n the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined cigarette package holder and ash tray embodying the invention and showing a package of cigarettes supported thereby.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the holder section of the article and showing the skeleton frame swung outward upon its hinge.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through an article such as is shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail view, partly in section, of the lower part or bottom portion of the package holder.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the letter A indicates the supporting base of the article and which in the present instance is in the nature of a dish-like tray adapted to constitute a receptacle for cigarette and cigar ashes. This tray, which is preferably stamped or otherwise formed from a plate or sheet of metal, such as copper, brass, aluminum, silver, or any other preferred metal, and is provided with a central boss 1, depressed at its crown as at 2 to form a seat for the foot, 3 of the post 4,:1 screw 5 being threaded through the boss and into the socket 6 in the post to detachably connect the post with the tray. This post 4 carries at is upper end a package holder which is indicated as an entirety by the letter B. the package itself being shown at C. This package holder B is also made of any selected metal. preferably the same metal as that from which the tray is formed. The body portion of this holder is also preferably made from a single sheet, blank or plate of the metal, which is cut and bent to provide the vertical, parallel, spaced clamping walls 7 and 8 integrally united at their lower portions by the horizontal bot tom wall 9, and it is this bottom wall 9 which is connected to the post 4, as shown at 10. The vertical Wall 7 is provided at its longitudinal side edges with a pair of inturned flanges, shown at 7, while the opposite vertical wall 8, is provided with a similar pair of inturned side edge flanges shown at 8, these opposing pairs of flanges being adapted to bear against the sides of the cigarette package as shown in Fig. l and thus prevent any pronounced lateral movement of the package which might cause it to be disengaged or fall from the holder. The lateral side edges of the bottom wall 9 of the holder are cut and bent to provide upwardly and inwardly inclined spring lips shown at 11 for the purpose hereinafter apparent,
The numeral 12 indicates a removable and resilient foot block which is carried by the holder and upon which the bottom end of the cigarette package is adapted to rest, this block forming a raised foot to elevate the top end of the cigarette package above the to end of the holder, as shown in Fig. 1. T iis foot block 12 is also preferably formed of a single blank of sheet metal which is bent in the form of an oblong to provide a top wall 13 with vertical side walls 14 and the end walls 15. The four vertical corners of the block are cut away as shown at 16 so to accommodate the adjacent parts of the flanges of the vertical walls of the holder, as by so cutting away the corners of the block, as will be understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2, the end walls 15 of the block are made substantially equal in width to the space between the opposing flanges 7 and 8' of the vertical walls of the holder, and consequently when the foot block is snapped into position in the holder, these end walls 15 of the foot block, will lie between and flush with the outer faces of the flanges 7' and 8' as will be readily understood. end walls 15 of the block have the lower free edges thereof turned inward as shown at 15. Now owing to the character of the metal from which the block is made, such block possessesa certain degree of resiliency and in snapping the block into position in the holder it is moved downward between the vertical walls of the holder until the inturned walls 15' of the block contact with the inclined lips 11 of the bottom wall ,.9 when these lips will guide the end walls of the block downward and outward, slightly spreading said end walls so that when the inturned edges 15 of these walls pass below the lips 11 they will spring or snap inward beneath the'bottom wall 9, as shown in Fig. 4 and thus interlock with such bottom wall thereby insurin that the block will be securely retained in position.
()ne of the vertical walls of the holder, in the present instance the wall 8, is cut and slmnped to provide a series of spaced lugs 17 which are adapted to engage the adjacent edges of a display sheet S. This sheet may be of any suitable character and printed with any desired data or information. For instance it may be in the nature of a calendar or an advertising card, or a picture and the like, and the lugs 17 are to assist in holding the sheet or card S against the outer face of the wall 8 so that such sheet or card will be exposed to view. In order to provide a suitable covering or frame for the sheet S, the top edge of the wall 8 is bent outward and rolled to provide a sleeve 18 which the frame may be raised and lowered or in other words, swung upon its hinge.
The lug 17'- at the bottom of the Wall 8 is bent to form a latch adapted to engage the keeper slot 23' in the bottom of the frame 21 as shown in Fig. 3, although it will be understood that any suitable means may be employed for latching the frame to the wall in order to have the frame form a cover for the sheet S, and to protect the latter while permittin the data or other matter printed on the s eet to .be exposed to view.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing the construction and manner of employing the invention will be readily apparent. It will be understood that when the block 12 is positiened in the holder and the packa e of ci arettes O inserted in place, said will cause the top of the package to prO ect above the top end of the holder so that the individual cigarettes may be readily removed. At the same time, the walls 7 and 8 and their vertical side flanges 7 and 8' will cooperate to so clamp the package that the lateral shifting movement or disengagement of the latter fr m the holder is prevented.
It will further be noted that the tray, the holder itself, and the foot block 12 for the holder are all preferably formed each of a lock single sheet or blank of metal which may be struction herein set forth by way of illustration as modification and variation ma be made without departin from the spirit of the invention or excee ing the scope of the appended claims.
What we claim is- 1. An article of the class described comprising a base member and a package holder supported thereon, said package holder ineluding a sheet of metal bent to provide a pair of opposing substantially parallel spaced walls adapted to clamp a package therebetween, one of said walls being provided with sheet-retaining members, and a frame hinged to said wall and adapted when closed to overlie the sheet retaining members and to cooperate with said wall and members to support a sheet.
2. An article of the class described comprising a base member and a package holder supported above the base member, said holder including a pair of spaced, opposing side walls adapted to clamp a package therebetween, a bottom wall extending between and uniting the two side walls and rovided with inturned end lips and a res1ient removable foot block having end walls adapted to resiliently interlock with the lip provided ends of the bottom wall.
3. In an article of the class described, a package holder comprising side walls and a. bottom wall, said bottom Wall having upwardly extending inturned spring lips, and a foot block having depending walls provided with inturned ends adapted to engage with the lip-provided portions of the bottom wall.
In testimony whereof, we afix our signatures.
