Specication of Letters Patent. i
Patented lFeb. 191.
Application ledl September 25, 1916. Serial No. 122,129.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS A. CORNELIUS, a citizen of the lUnited States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath or Basin Waste; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrlption of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates toa waste plug and construction for operating the same said plug being used in wash basins, bath tubs and the like. llt is an object and purpose of the present invention to provide a `construction of this character in which the waste plug may be operated up and down through a pivotally mounted operating lever and in novel means for connecting said lever to the plug to compensate the arcuate movement of the end of the lever; A further object of the invention consists in the provision of operating means for the plug which is ractically of universal application and capa le of adjustment for use with dilierent sizes'of wash basins, the operating mechanism being provided with a number ofadjustments which permit the positioning of the plug and the operating knob of the device in a large number of positions with respect to each other. ll/lany other objects and purposes together with novel construction and arrangement of parts for attaining a maximum flexibility of operation and adjustment of the operating mechanism for the plug will appear as understanding is had of the construction disclosed in the accompanying drawing, in which;
lFigure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in `vertical section showing the application of my invention to a wash basin or lavatory.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation illustrating` the connection between the operating lever ipr the plug and the device used to actuate said operating lever.
Fig. 3 is an under plan.l view of the plug used, and
lFig. 4 is a vertical section showing the mount for that part of the mechanism which is operated by hand for changing the position of the plug. u
Like reference characters refer te like lili Positioned in the opening through the Y neck 5 is a sleeve 6 at its upper end formed with a flange 7 underneath which a washer or gasket 8 is placed so that when the sleeve is secured to the basin a water tight connection is made. rllhis sleeve is provided with a number of openings 9 in the sides below the flange 7 located in conjunction with the end of the overflow passage 4. 'llhe lower part of the sleeve extends below the neck 5 of the wash basin and is threaded to receive a nut 10 .having an upper disk-like flange 11 adapted to be tightened against the under side of the neck 5, there being interposed between the neck and said part 11 a gasket or washer preferably of rubber making thereby a water tight connection which precludes any leakage. A coupling 13 threads onto the lower end of the sleeve 6 its upper end being covered and concealed by a depending sleeve 14 formed integral with the nut 10. A waste pipe 15 is threaded into the lower end of the coupling 14 and leads to the waste main in the usual manner.
Movably mounted in the sleeve 6 is a rod 16 formed with a plurality of outstanding radial wings 17 to serve as guides for the rod in the sleeve. A plug 18 is secured at the upper end of the rod and is adapted to seat in a suitable seat in the upper end of the sleeve 6 in one position of its movement. At the lower end of rod 16 a. head 19 is cast Substantially in the form of a short cylinder it being bored lengthwise to provide a socket for la purpose hereafter described. rlFhe coupling 13 has a neck 20 projecting laterally therefrom in the end of which is placed a gasket 21 bearing against which is a ball 22 formed between the ends of a lever 23 the inner end of' which extends into the coupling and is fashioned as a ball 24 it entering loosely the opening in the head 19 on the lower end of the vertical rod 16 as shown.
mounted in a sleeve 28 nut 22 is threaded on to the end of the neck and serves to force the ball 22 against gasket 21 the pressure with which the ball bears against this gasket being regulated by the nut.
Lever 23 is adapted to be operated from a point above the support 2. The device for operating it is mounted on the support 2 comprising a rod 26 having an operating head or knob 27 at its upper end and loosely which at its upper end is formed with an enlarged head 29 resting against the upper side of the support While a nut 30 is threaded onto the sleeve below the support 2 serving t0 fix the mount for rod 26 firmly in posltion. The
lower end of rod 26 is bifurcated as indicated at 31, the upper end of a short rod 32 being received between the such bifurcation and pivotally connected thereto. In alinement with the rod 32 is another rod 33 said rods 32 and 33 being oppositely threaded and connected together .by a turn buckle 34. The lower end of rod 33 is formed with a spherical end 35 adapt. Ved to enter a cylindrical boring in the enlarged end 36 of lever 23. The upper portion of the part 36 is removed to form a slot 37 to receive rod 33 and permit the adjustment of the end 35 thereof lengthwise of the boring. Alined openings 38 are formed through the sides of part 36 and the end 35 of rod 33 is held in position between anyV two of said openings by cotter pins 39 which pass through the openings at each side ot end 35. y
In a construction of the character described the connection` between the lower end of the rod 16 and the inner end of the lever 23 is one permitting movements of the rod and plug in a vertical .direction without any swing from the vertical due to the movement of the head 24: through an arc of a circle, the head sliding back and forth in the opening in the part 19 simultaneously with the up and down movements of the valve rod. Furthermore the connectionV between the rod33 and the outer end of the operating lever is one which may be -readily changed for diderent conditions and, likewise the turn buckle may, whenever desired, be used to adjust the distance vbetween the end of the lever 23 and the lower end of the immediate operating rod 26. In addition the pivotal connection between the lower ears formed by end of the operating rod 26y and the upper end of the rod 32 permits the positioning of the rod 32 at var1ous angles with respect to the operating rod 26. These various adjustable constructions and pivotal connections permit a wide range of adjustment of the device whereby it may be used with wash basins of different depths and diameters without the necessity for designing various sizes of waste plugs and operating parts forthe many different sizes of wash basins. The joint connections are substantially all of the ball and socket type eliminating friction and binding to the greatest possible degree, and renderin the device very easy to work and practica ly free from getting out of order.
I claim- 1. In combination with a basin having a waste opening, a plug for closing the same, a rod depending from the plug, a cylindrical head having an' openino therethrough at the lower end of the ro a lever pivotally mounted between its ends, a ball on one end of the lever entering the opening in said head, ,an enlarged part on of th lever having a cylindrical boring therein and slotted 1n one side, there also being provided a plurality of alined openings through the sides of said part, a rod having a spherical ball at one end said ball entering the boring in said part withthe rod above the ball located in the slot, pins passed through said alined openings one-at each 'side of the ball, a rod in alinernent with said second mentioned rod, a turn buckle connecting the rods, an operating member pivotally connected to said last mentioned rod, and means to mount the operating member forvvertical movements.
2. In a mechanism of the character described, a waste plug, a lever associated therewith for operating the same, operating means for actuating the lever, including a rod, a ball at the end of the rod, an enlarged part Aat one end of the lever provided with a cylindrical boring and avslot in the side communicating with said boring, said ball being received within the boring and means to retain the ball at any one of a plurality of positions in the length of said part.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
LOUIS A. CORNELIUS.
