' MARKING-MACHINE.
Application filed January 25, 1915.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, county of Plymouth, State of 'lilassaclmsctts, have invented an Improve ment in Mar-hing-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing likeparts.
This invention relates to marking Ina chines of that type that are used. for marking or printing trade names, manufacturers names, or other identifying data on cloth, leather, or other similar material. Machines of this type are used to some extent in the manufacture-of shoes for marking identifying data on different parts of the shoe, or for marking the name of the manufacturer or trade name on the inside facing or some other part of the shoe. Machines of this character are also used in various other lines of manufacture for somewhat similar purposes. Such machines generally include a printing couple comprising a platen, on which the work is placed, and a die member or impression member carrying type characters. which die member is movable toward and from the platen thereby to make the printed impression.
In some machines of this character the 'iinpression-making compound or material is in the form of gold leaf or other metal leaf carried by a backing in the form of a strip or sheet, and the device herein illus trated is of this type. One of the objects of my invention is to provide novel means for feeding the strip carrying the gold leaf as successive impressions are made, so that each impression will be made from a fresh portion of the strip.
in some classes of work it is desirable that the printing member should remain in contact with the work for a considerable length of time in order to make a proper impression. and one feature of my invention relates to a means by which there will be a dwell or pause in the movement of the die memliier when it is in contact with the Work. In order to give an understanding of my invention I have illustrated in the drawings a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described, after which the novel features will he claims.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rying the type pointed out in the appended Patented Jan. 29, 1918.
Serial No. 4,101.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a machine embodying my in vention Fig. 2 is a front view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a side view showing the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 1 s is a detail view showing the part of the control nrcohanism by which the plunger is caused to dwell when in contact with the work;
Fig. 5 is a. fragmentary sectional view showing the strip-feeding means;
Fig. 6 is a section on the line ww, Fig. l;
Fig. 7 is a section on the line :I/- Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a detail view of the clutch mechanism, being a section on the line aa, Fig. 9;
Fig. 9 is a section on the line Z)-b, Fig. 8;
Fig. 10 is a section on the line c--c, Fig. 1;
Fig. 11 is a perspective view releasing member 86;
Fig. 12 is a section on the .line (Z-(.Z, Fig. 5;
Fig. 13 is a plan view of the platen showing the gage.
The elements of the printing couple are indicated at 1 and 2, respectively, 1 being the platen on which the work is supported, and 2 being the die or impression member. The platen is herein shown as sustained by a suitable frame which also supports the operative parts of the machine, this frame being herein shown as constructed to be secured to a bench or bed i. The die member 2 is carried by a. plunger 5 which is movable toward and from the platen 1 and is mounted in suitable guides or ways 6 formed on the frame 3. This plunger may be given its reciprocating movement in any suitable way and in the construction shown I have provided means for actuating it from a driving shaft 7 which is mounted in suitable bearings formed on the frame and is driven from a driving pulley 8 through suitable clutch mechanism presently to be described. This shaft 7 is shown as provided with an eccentric 9 which is connected to the plunger through a connecting rod 10 so that rotation of the shaft will give the plunger its reciprocating movement. I will preferably make the die member 2 can characters so that it can be removed from the plunger thereby enabling me to employ any one of a number of die members, according to the character of the of the pawl- 'wrench, key or other tool by which the screw may be turned.
The platen member 1 will preferably be provided with a' suitable gage by which the work 1 1 can be properly positioned. The gage herein shown comprises two gaging fingers situated at opposite sides of the platen 1 and against which the edge of the work 14 may be placed. 1 will preferably provide means for adjusting this gage so that the printed impression may be placed at any desired distance from the edge of the work. In the illustrated embodiment of my invention this is provided for by mounting the fingers15 on a plate or mem ber 16 that is situated at the back of the platen 1 and Which'is provided with a stem 17 extending into an opening in the platen and having at its front enda screw-threaded bore 18 into which an adjusting screw 19 is screw-threaded, the head of the adjusting screw being accessible from the front of the platen. The opening in the platen through which the stem 17 extends is enlarged at its rear end, and a spring 20 is situated in said enlarged portion, said spring encircling the stem and bearing at one end against the member 16 and at the other end against a shoulder 21. The spring tends normally to force the gage rearwardly, while the adjusting screw 19 retains the gage in its adjusted position. By backing the screw 19 off, the spring 20 will force the gage rearwardly and by turning the screw up the gage will be drawn forwardly.
As stated above, one of the objects of my invention is to provide a novel machine of this class which embodies means for feeding a strip containing some printing material between the work and the die 2, so that when the die descends and is brought into printing position, the type characters thereon will engage the strip and cause a transfer of the printing material on the strip to the work ll. While the strip may contain any printing material the machine herein shown is especially useful where the strip is coated with gold leaf, so that the operation of the die 2 will be to transfer the gold leaf from the portion of the strip with which the type characters engage to the work, thus making a gold impression on the work. The strip is shown at and itmay be formed of the guide 23 as occasion requires.
paper, cloth or any material which can be loaded with printing compound. This strip is fed to the work through a strip-guiding member 23 secured to the front of the machine and comprising a support or plate 2+ on which the strip rests, and guiding flanges 25 that overlie the edges of the strip and hold it in position. The strip 22 may be in the form of a continuous strip, in which case it will be taken from a roll or other source of supply, or it may be formed in comparatively short lengths, or in pieces of suflicient length to be fed into the top of The lower end 26 of the guide 23 is situated slightly above the platen, as shown best in Figs. 1 and 5, said guide having the curved delivery apron 27 over which the strip passes. From this delivery apron the strip feeds across the platen above the work 1| and extends to a strip-feeding mechanism designed to feed the strip forward, one step at each operation of the machine. Any suitable strip-feeding mechanism may be provided without departing from the invention. In the construction herein shown said strip-feeding mechanism comprises a reciprocating feeding element for gripping the strip and feeding it forward, and a retaining element, to engage the strip and prevent backward movement thereof when (he feeding element is moving backward to secure a fresh grip on the strip. The feeding element con'iprises the two gripping jaws 28 and 29, the jaw 28 being shown as consiituted by the bridge portion of a yoke-shaped member 30 between the arms of which the strip 22 extends,said arms beingpi voted to the frame at 230. The other gripping member 29 is shown as constituted by the lower ed go of a plate'or bar 31 which extends from one arm to the other of the yoke-shaped member 30 and is pivotally mounted in said arms at 32'. hen the member 31 is in, the full line position Fig. 5, the gripping jaws are open which is the position when said gripping element is moving forwardly in the di rection of the arrow 0 into the dotted line position to get a fresh grip on the strip. When the bar 31 is moved into the dotted line position, Fig. 5, and starts its return movement, the lower edge thereof will grip the strip between itself and the member 28. and this is the position of the parts during the strip-feeding movement in. the direction of the arrow 79.
I have provided herein means for giving the yoke 30 its reciprocating movement, which means also operates to swing the bar 31 into its gripping position when the yoke 30 is given its strip-feeding movement, and into its non-gripping position when said yoke is moved forwardly. This means coniprises a link 33 pivotally connected to the bar 31 at 8 1 below the pivotal connect ion 35? llil l'ZO
of the bar with the yoke 30. The link 33 is pivotally connected at 35 to the lower end of an arm 36 which is fast on a rock-shaft 37 mounted in the frame of the machine. This rock-shaft has an arm 38 fast thereon to which is connected a link or connecting rod 39 that is actuated by an eccentric or crank 40 on the shaft 7, said eccentric being properly timed and positioned to give the arm 36 its requisite movement. The connection between the link 09 and the arm 38 is adjustable so as to provide for giving a greater or less feeding movement to the strip at each reciprocatirm. This adjustment is herein provided for by making the arm 38 with the slot 4]. in which is adjustably motmted a bolt 42 by which the link 39 is connected to the arm 38. The strip-retaining element which holds the strip against backward movement when the gripping element is moving from the full to the dotted line position Fig. 5 is herein constituted by a rest- 43 over which the strip 22 passes and which is sustained by an arm 44 secured to the frame and a clamping member 45 movable toward and from the rest, said clamping member being operative to clamp the strip against the rest when the feeding element is moving forwardly and being separated from the rest. when the feeding element is giving the strip its feeding movement. This clamping member 45 is carried by an arm or plate 46 which is pivotally connected at 47 to the end of an arm or support 48 secured to the frame. The member 46 has extending upwardly therefrom a flange or car e9 which overlies one side of the link 33 and is frictionally'held thereagainst by a screw 50 that screw-threaded into the car 49 and extends through a slot 51 in said link, a resilient washer 90 being confined between the head of the screw and the link. This construction provides a frictionalconnection between the link and the clamping member by which the reciprocalin movement of the link gives the required movement to the said clamping member to clamp andunclamp the strip. ll hen the link 33 moves to the leftFig. 5, as shown by the arrow 0, the friction of the link against the ear 49 and spring member 90 will cause. the member 46 to turn about its pivot to bring the clamping member 45 against the strip thereby clamping the latter against the rest The screw 50 will be adjusted so that while the friction developed is sutlicient to rock the member 46, yet it will permit the link to continue its movement after the clamping member has been brought against the rest, and during this continued. movement the friction holds the clamping member in its strip-clamping position. Vt hen the link moves backwardly or in the direction of the arrow 29, to give the member its strip-feeding movement, the friction between said link and the member 46 turns said member into the dotted line position to release the clamping pressure on the strip thereby to allow the strip to move forwardly freely. It will thus be seen that I have provitfled a friction device for actuating the clamping member 4:5, which friction device is operated by the means for actuating the gripping member.
In operating with some kinds of printing material a better impression can be made if the die or platen is heated. I have, there fore provided m cans for heating the die, this being herein accomplished by forming the plunger with an aperture or opening 52 into which a heating'element, such, for instance, as an electric heater, can be inserted for maintaining the die in a heated condition.
In making some kinds of printed impressions it desirable that the die should remain in contact with the work or with the strip for an appreciable length of time, and one feature of my invention relates to a construction by which the time interval during which the die is in contact with the work may be increased or diminished. When the shaft 7 is rooting at a. uniform speed. the time interval during which the die is in contact with the work or strip is comparatively short as this contact will occur only when theeccentric is pe ing its dead center. in machines of this nature where a longer contact is desirable it has been here tofore necessary to hold the work in position while the die made several successive reciprocations in order to make a good im pression. My invention provides means whereby the die 2 may be brought to rest when in contact with the work or with the strip, that is in printing position, and re main at rest for predetermined length of time, and then be carried into the position shown in Fig. 1. in machines of this type, it customary to employ a so-called oncrevolution clutch between the driving pulley and the operating shaft so that the machine will be brought to rest with the die in raised position after one cycle of operation. I have provided herein means whereby the clutch may be disengaged when is in its lowered or printing position and engaged again after a predetermined time interval thereby to complete the cycle of operations and raise the plun er. The clutch herein shown comprises a cuitch member 53 in which slidably mounted a clutch dog that is adapted to engag a shoulder or projection formed on the driving pulley 8 when said dog is in operative position. This clutch dog is acted upon by a spring 56 which tends normally to throw operative positiom as shown in dotted lines Fig. 9, and is also provided with a laterallyextending releasi 'g finger with which a releasing member or knoclcotl" 5? is adapted to engage, the latter having a beveled face the plun geiit into its 58. The releasing finger 57 is carried by a lever 59 pivotally mounted at 60 said lever having a laterally-extended portion 61 to which is connected a link 62 leading to a treadle or other actuator. This arm is acted upon by a spring 63 which tends normally to hold it in. operative position with the member 57 in position to engage the finger To start the machine the connection 62 is drawn downwardly by a treadle or other device thereby rocking the arm 59 into the dotted lineposition-l ig; 1 and removing the releasing member 57 from engagement with the finger This allows the spring 56 to nur-rc thoclutch dog into clutching engagement with the driving pulley 8 thereby starting the machine in operation. If after the machine is started. the treadle is released the lever 59 and member 57 will as same the full line positions Figs. 1 and 8, and when the shaft 7 completes its revolution, the finger 55 will engage the bevel portion 58 of the releasing member and thereby be moved backwardly into the full line position Fig. 9 and disengaged from the driving pulley.
The above describes a more or less familiar construction of one-revolution clutch. In addition I have provided herein a device which can be thrown into and out of operativeposition as desired and which when in operative position operates to disengage the clutch when the plunger is in its printing position and to hold said clutch disengaged tor a predetermined length of time and then to automatically cause the clutch to be reengaged again to bring the plunger back into its elevated position. This device comprises an auxiliary clutch-releasing member 6%. which can be moved into position to engage the clutch-releasing finger 55 or out of such position. This auxiliary clutch-releas ing member 6t is so situated that when it is in its operative position it will engage the finger 55 and release the clutch when the plunger is in its lowered or printing position. This releasing member 64 is carried by a member or lever 65 pivotally mounted at 66 upon a carrier 67 adapted for vertical movement on the frame 3so that when the carrier 67. is in its elevated position the releasing member 64 will be in its operative position, while when the carrier is in its lowered position tl e releasing member 64: will be inoperative. This carrier is shown as provided at its upper end with a slot 68 embracing a stud 69 carried by the frame and is provided at its lower end with another slot 70 through which a clamping screw 71 extends. This screw and stud guide the carrier in its vertical movement and the clamping screw 71 serves to hold it in its elevated position. The carrier 67 sustains a shaft 74c carrying a gear 7 2 which when the carrier is raised is adapted to mesh with agear 73 rigid with the driving pulley 8. The shaft 74 is also provided with a pinion 75 that meshes with a gear 76 mounled on the carrier, and said gear actuates a cam member 77 adapted to engage the lower end 80 of the lever 65 thereby to move the disengaging member (3% into its initial position. The gearing 72, (5, 7G is thus driven from the driving pulley 8 so that when the carrier 67 is in its elevated position said gearing is operating continuously. \Vhen, therefore the carrier 67 is in its elevated operative position. with the; gear 7 2 in mesh with the gear 73 and the machine is started in operation by releasing the clutch the shaft 7 will make a halt revolution to bring the die 1nen1- her 2 into its lowered printing position, at which time the clutch will be disengaged by the member 6%, allowing the die member to remain in its lowered position. The continued rotation of the driving pulley 8 and gear 73 will operate the train of gearing 72, 75, 76 and thereby rotate the cam 77, and when said cam has been turned sufiiciently to bring the projection 81 thereon against the roll at the lower end of the lever (35, said lever will be turned about its pivot to throw the disengaging member G t out of engagement with the releasing finger thereby permitting the clutch to become on- I gaged again. The shaft. 7 will then be rotated further until the clutch is disengaged by the member 57 when the plunger is elevated.
have also provided means whereby the length of the time interval during which the plunger will remain in printing position can be varied. I accomplish this herein by providing means whereby the cam 81 can be adjusted so that it will occupy dillerent positions when the machine is brought to restwith the plunger elevated. This cam 77 is adjustably mounted on a bushing 82 that in turn is rotatably mounted on a sleeve 99 fast to a shaft 98 to which the gear 76 is secured. The sleeve 99 is provided with ratchet teeth 83 and, the bushing 82 has integral therewith a housing 96 in which is retained a spring-pressed pawl Sl that is adapted to engage the ratchet teeth 83 whereby the cam will be rotated forwardly by the shaft 98. This pawl is provided with a laterally-extending finger 85 which is adapted to be engaged by a pawl-lifting member 86 that is slidably mounted in the bearing 87- for the shaft and is acted upon by a spring 88 that normally tends to throw it into its operative position. A cam member 89 is slidably mounted in the bearing 87 and is provided with a cam face 90 adapted to engage a correspondingly-shaped face on the pawl-releasing member So. This memher 89 is acted upon by a suitable spring 91 which tends normally to hold it in inoperative position. lVhen the carrier 67 is elevated the actuating member 89 stands in line with a projection 9:2 formed on the clutch lever 59 so that when the treadle (32 is depressed and the lever 57 is moved to disengage the clutch, the projection 92 will engage the member 89 "and move it into a posi' tion to withdraw the member 86 from the pin 85. ihis permits the pawl Set to move into its operative position in engagement with the ratchet thereby coupling the cam to the shaft 98. The cam will, therefore, be set in rotation andwill continue to rotate with the shaft 98 until the latter has made one complete rotation, when the finger will ride up the inclined. portion 175 of the pawl-disengaging member 86 thereby lifting the pawl out of operative engagement with the ratchet S3. The parts will remain in this position until the clutch is operated to set the machine in operation again.
The cam 77 is secured in its adjusted position on the sleeve 82 by means of a setscrew 910, which set-scrow provides for shifting the position of the cam relative to the sleeve 82. This adjustment of the cam 77 provides for varying the time interval during which the die member will be in contact with the work or in printing position. When the cam 7 is so adjusted on the sleeve 82 that it will occupy the position shown in Fig. 1 when the parts come to rest, then said time interval Will be the greatest, for the parts will remain in printing position during substantially a complete rotation of the cam. If a shorter time interval is desired the cam 77 will be adjusted on the sleeve 82 to set the projection 81 into a position so that it will engage the roll 80 before it makes a complete revolution, such adjustment of the cam 77 shortening said time interval. By this means it is possible to regulate the time interval that the die member is in printing contact with the work so as to produce the desired results The construction above described especially useful Where it is desired to emboss the material or to form a. burnt impression therein, for by heating the die and then causing the die member to dwell for a desired length of time when in printed engagement with the work, said die member will burn an impression in the work.
In the above application I have used the term strip as indicating the sheet or vehicle which carries the printing compound, whether the latter be ink or gold leaf, or any other material. This so-called strip may be in comparatively short pieces or may have a long ribbon-like shape, and I have used the term strip in the claims not with the intention of describing a limitation of the vehicle carrying the inking compound, but merely as a convenient term for indicating some such vehicle.
In order to provide for operating equally til well on work of varying thicknesses, I have provided means for adjusting the plunger relative to its operating mechanism. I have arranged for this herein by providing an adjustable connection between the connecting rod 10 and said plunger 5, said connection being best seen in Fig. 10. The connecting rod is pivotally connected at its lower end on a pivotal pin 14:3, the central portion 144 of which to which the connecting rod 10 is secured being eccentric slightly relative to the ends 145. The eccentric ends of this pin are journaled in bushings 1 16 carried by the plunger, and one end of the pin is provided with a tool-receiving socket into Which a tool 147 may be inserted through an opening 148 in the guideway 6. By turning the pin 143 the plunger will be adjusted relative to the connecting rod due to the eccentricity of the ends 145 of said pin. This adjustment is sutlicient to compensate for different thicknesses of material.
Vhile I have illustrated herein a selected embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the constructional features U shown.
