Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented Jan, 115, rare.
Application filed October 2, 1915. Serial No. 53,785. I
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, F RED F. UNDEnwooD, av citizen of the United States, residing at Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Threading Devices for Curtain-Rods; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to admit of a curtain rod being conveniently and expeditiously threaded through the hem of a lace curtain.
it further object of the invention is to provide an attachment for the curtain pole, that will admit of the above object being carried out, and which will be of simple construction, cheap to manufacture, durable, and efficient in operation.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention in which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings forming a part thereof in which Figure 1 is a detail view of the hem of a lace curtain, showing the manner of threading the rod therethrough.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the curtain rod attachment, and showing the same applied to the end of the rod.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamp employed to clamp the curtain rod when the latter is inserted into the attachment.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates a curtain, B the hem and C the curtain rod. The attachment consists of an elongated slightly tapering tubular body 1, formed preferably of aluminum or other similar material, and having one end closed and pointed, as at 2 and the other end 3 opened.
Positioned within the body 1, is a clamp 4i. Ibis clamp, as shown in Fig. 3 is formed of a single length of spring wire bent intermediate its ends to provide an offset portion 5, the strands of the wire being continued from the offset portion and terminally bent upon themselves to provide the clamping jaws 6 and 7, the ends of the jaws being deflected in opposite directions, as at 13 and 14:, and the terminals of the wire, designated respectively 15 and 16, being extended from the jaws in intersecting planes.
lVhen the clamp i is positioned within the tubular body, the jaws have their deflected terminals engaging the inner faces of the walls of the tubular body, so that the jaws will be partially forced together and said deflected terminals of the jaws engage behind a split washer 17, that is embedded within the open end of the housing and prevents the withdrawal of the clamp 4:.
In use, one end of the curtain rod is inserted in the open end of the tubular housing or between the jaws 6 and 7, of the clamp, as shown in Fig. 2. The pointed end of the tubular housing is then introduced into one end of the hem of the curtain, and force applied to the rod, causing the same and the tubular body to travel through the hem. After the curtain rod has been fully inserted into the hem, and the tubular body projected through the opposite end of the hem, the said tubular body can be removed from the curtain rod, and the opposite ends of the rod placed on the supporting members provided therefor. H
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A threading device for curtain rods including a tubular body having one end closed and pointed and having the other end fully open and adapted to detachably receive one end of a curtain rod, a clamp for holding the body on the rod, being formed of a single length of wire looped at its medial portion to provide relatively wide clamping jaws adapted to engage the outer surface of the inner end of the rod when the latter is inserted within the body, the terminals of the jaws curved back upon themselves and flared outwardly to provide an enlarged flared end to permit the easy insertion of the rod between the jaws, and a washer 10- In testimony whereof I afiix my Signature cated within the open end of the tubular in presence of two witnesses. body and adapted to engage the flared ter- FRED F.
