It is found in actual practice that by giving the jet the described course, its efficiency is materially increased as compared with any other disposition of it, of which I am aware. It forms a barrier across the upper portion of the down-take leg of the Siphon and etfectually prevents air from rising in said tip-take leg to the crown of the Siphon. Furthermore, whatever air may be in the crown of the Siphon is drawn out by the suction produced by the water flowing through the down-take leg. It does this so etectually that it has been demonstrated by actual practice that even it the clean-out cap 18, be removed, thereby opening the crown of the siphon to atmosphere, the siphon will nevertheless be primed, or having been. primed, the siphonic action will not be broken, and this is more than has been complished by any heretofore existing arrangemento'f which l am aware. With all heretofore existing arrangements, the ad mission of air to the crown of the siphon will either prevent the siphon from being primed in the first instance, or, it the priming has been accomplished, will break the siphonie action.
Aside from this coperation of the jet in the `siphonic action, the particular arrangement described gives it a lifting effect that will evacuatethe basin, even to the extent ot breaking the water seal in the trap, this hev ing a result that will not follow if the jet is directed centrally through the up-take leg of the discharge pipe. I advance no theory. as to the superior etliciency due to the angular course of the jet, relatively to the axis of the discharge pipe, but may say that the statements above made have\bcen proved by actual practice.
For supplying the passage, 13, with water. its upper end communicates with a chamber, 19, in the extension, back wall of this chamber is formed by a web, 20, having an opening which is occul, pied by the' cylindrical portion, 21, of the casing of a valve device. 22. lt is unnecessary, 'tor the purposes ol this application, to fully show or describe in detail the construction ot this valve device. The valve device has a valve stern, 25, connected with thc val fc the infiuencel of its own Weight and any load that is put upon it will produce great tor sional strain upon this joint, tending t0 injure and weaken it. ln order to eliminate this torsional strain as far as possible, and confine the strain upon the joint to a vertical strain parallel with the joint itself, and at right angles to the horizontal disposed lower end of the down-take leg of the siphonic discharge pipe, the latter is provided on its opposite sides with perforated lugs, 38, through which pass headed tie rods or bolts, 39, the heads et which bear against the front faces ot' thel lugs, and the rear ends of which are Screw threaded to receive nuts, 40, which bear upon the rear faces of lugs carried by a yoke, 41, which, in turn, bears against the rear side of the soil stack, the lugs of the yoke being perforated for the passage of the tie rods or bolts, 39, so that by tightening up the nuts on the tie rods or bolts, the latter may be put under tensile strain, and thereby prevent the siphonic discharge pipe from tippii'ig' forward.
The object in making the down-take leg of the siphon tortuous 1s to cause the water to be deflected across the waterway so as -to form a sort of dam or cut-oli for preventing the air from rising through the downtake leg to the crown of the Siphon. am aware that it is not broadly new to make the down-take leg of a Siphon tortuous for a like purpose, but the use of a Siphon of this construction in combination with e jet opening arranged to discharge a jet ol water upward in the 11p-take leg, manner herein described, results in the complete and thorough evacuation of the basin even Where the water supply is under low pressure, such as in fixtures having low-- down flushing tanks.

Talent, #559559, Clnocl UCL. i i f 5 the water passage for supplying the water 'communicates with the water box at its opposite sides, while in Fig. 5 that portion of the water box which is above the plane of the packing ring does not extend completely around the outlet opening of the basin, but only far enough to conduct the water from the passage, 13, to the opening, 11", between the portions 1l and 11n, of the water box.
It is preferable to divide the water-way for supplying water to the jet opening into two passages which extend around the outer sides of the horn ot' the basin as shown in Fig. 5, because it produces a more even distribution of the water and tends to avoid the objectionable whistling or hissing sound that is usually produced by the jets ot water in fixtures of this type.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A plumbing ixture having a bowl comprising a basin provided through its bottom with an outlet opening, a hollow horn joining the basin around said opening and projecting downward therefrom, -a discharge pipe terminating at its intake end in a bell mouth presented laterally relatively to the axis of said pipe and upwardly toward the basin, into which bell-mouth the hollow horn projects, said horn having a lateral discharge opening presented in the direction of the axis of the intake leg oi' the discharge pipe, the basin being seated upon and supported by said bell-mouth, and means for supporting said discharge pipe with its bellmouth clear of the floor.
2. A staclchung plumbing fixture having a bowl comprising a basin provided through its bottom with an outlet opening, a hollow horn joining the basin around said opening and projecting downward therefrom, a discharge pipe having an iii-take leg terminating at its in-take end in a bell-mouth presented laterally relatively to the axis oit said intake leg andupwardly toward the basin into which bell-mouth the hollow horn Vprojects, said horn having a lateral discharge opening presented in the direction of the axis of the intake leg of the discharge pipe, into which bell-mouth the horn projects, the basin being seated upon and supported by said bell-mouth, and means for connecting the discharge pipe to a stack, whereby it is supported independently of the ioor.
3. A wall-hung or stack hung plumbing fixture having a bowl comprising a basin provided through its bottom with an outlet opening, a hollow hrn joining the basin around said opening and projecting downward therefrom, a discharge pipe having an upwardly inclined intake leg terminating at its intake end in a bell-mouth presented laterally relatively to the axis of said intake leg and upwardly toward the basin into which bell-mouth the hollow horn projects, said horn having a lateral dischargeopening located opposite and presented in the direction of the upwardly inclined intake leg of the discharge pipe in position to discharge directly into and through said upwardly inclined in-take leg, longitudinally, the basin being seated upon and supported by said bell-mouth and means lor support-- jing the discharge pipe independently of the oor.
4. A wall-hung or stack hung plumbing fixture having a bowl comprising a asin provided through its bottom with an outlet opening, a hollow horn joining the basin around said opening and projecting downward therefrom, a discharge pipe having an upwardly inclined intake leg terminating at its intake end in a bellmouth presented lat erally relatively to the axis of said upwardly inclined intake le and upwardly toward the basin, into whichFlfiell-inouth the hollow horn projects, said horn having a lateral discharge opening presen-ted in the direction of the axis oit the upwardly inclined in-talre leg of the discharge pipe in position to discharge directly into and through said intake leg7 longitudinally, the basin being seated upon and supported by said bell-mouth and means for supporting the dischar e pipe independently of the floor, said horn aving also a jet opening arranged to discharge a jet ot water into and longitudinally through said upwardly inclined intake leg.
5. A plumbing fixture having a bowl conr.
prising a basin provided through its bottom ywith an outlet opening, a hollow horn joining the basin around said opening and proj ccting downward therefrom, a siphonic discharge pipe having an upwardly inclined intake leg, the lower in-take end of which terminates in a bell-mouth presented laterally relative to the axis of said pipe and upwardly toward the basin, into which bellmouth the hollow horn projects and upon which the basin is seated so as to be supported thereby, said horn having a lateral discharge opening located opposite the inclined intake leg of the discharge pipe and presented in a direction to discharge directly into and through said in-take leg, longitudinally, said horn having also a jet opening disposed with its projected axis atan angle to the longitudinal axis olf the intake leg of the siphon and passing in 'close proximity to the dam or overflow level of the siphon and means for supporting said discharge pipe with its bell-mouth clear ol .the floor.
6. A stack-hung plumbing lixture having a bowl comprising a basin provided through its bottom with an outlet opening, a hollow horn joining the basin around said opening and projecting downward therefrom, a siphonic discharge pipe having an insliued up-take leg, the lower end of which terinii teo oharge joining Ihe basin around Said opening and projecting do\\'\'nward therefrom, a waterbdx, one "ilyallofwhich is formed by the front wz'lill of said horn, a jet opi'ining through which vthe water-box and the interior oi the horn communicate, a water-way or passage,
