CAR-FENDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan.'8,1918
' Application filed October 30, 1917. Serial No. 199,347.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM EDRING'I'ON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Turners Station, in the county of Henry and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Fend ers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to guards or fenders for railway cars, trolley cars and street cars.
The object of my invention is to produce a guard or fender for inclosing the sides of cars beneath the floors thereof to prevent persons from falling under the cars and their wheels. Another .object of my invention is to produce a device of the character described, adapted to be adjustably secured upon the sides of cars and capable of being adjusted to different heights from the ground. A further object thereof is to produce a fender of said character, adapted to be vertically slid upon suitable supports upon the side of a car; and a still further object of my invention is to produce a more simple, cheap and efficient device of said character than has heretofore been constructed.
To these ends, my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, 1n which like reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a side view of my invention showing the fenders in lowered position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the fenders in raised position;
Fig. 3 is an end view of one side of a car equipped with mv fenders;
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line it-45 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a detail view of a portion of the side of a car with the fender plates removed;
Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional vlew of a portion of a side plate, and
Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view showing the headed bolt on which my side plates slide.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates the side of a car upon which is secured a plurality of vertically disposed bars 2 which depend somewhat below the lower edge of the side. Said bars are secured thereon by the bolts 3 having the screwthreaded ends and nuts 4 on the inner end and the enlarged head or button 5 on the outer end.
As shown in the drawings, a plurality of plates 6 are carried on said bars and adjustably secured thereon by the heads 5 of the bolts 3 before mentioned engaging in the slots 7.
For the purpose of securing said plates in desired position and to permit them to be held in vertical adjustment, I provide the looped rod 7 secured on the side of the car as by bolts 8. Said looped rod embraces the fender plates to permit them to slide up and down therein and the outer member of the rod is provided with a plurality of ratchet teeth 9 into which the pawl 10 carried on the face of the fender plates may be engaged when the fender plates are raised from their lowered positions. The outer end of said pivoted pawl is counter-weighted to throw the engaging end into contact with the ratchet teeth on the bar.
As shown in the drawings each of said fender plates is provided with shoulders or lugs 11 on each side of the looped rod 7 to act as guides when the fender is raised and lowered.
From the foregoing description, and by reference to the accompanying drawings, it will be appreciated that my fender plates when carried in lowered positions, will inclose the lower parts of a car and completely prevent a person falling beneath the wheels thereof, and yet will permit the fender plates to be readily raised for the purpose of gaining access beneath the car to make adjustments or repairs that might be required.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to be secured by Letters Patent is- 1. A car fender comprising a pluralitv of vertically disposed bars secured upon the sides of a car, a pluralitv of vertically disposed plates having vertical slots therein, headed bolts passing through said slots to secure said plates on the sides of a car, and means for securing said plates in raised and lowered positions.
2. A car fender comprising a plurality of vertically disposed bars secured upon the sides of a car, a plurality of vertically dislooped rod carried onrthe side of a car interposed p ates having vertical slots therein, headed bolts passing through said slots to secure said plates on the sides of a car a on each side of said looped rod, substantially as described. j
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. mediate of the vertical bars provided with HIRAM EDRINGTON. ratchet teeth on the edge thereof, a pawl pivotally carried on said fender plate to engage said teeth and guidelugs on said plate Witnesses: V
