COVER-HOLDER AND STOVE-LID LIFTER.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1, 1918.
Application filed April 18, 1916, Serial N0v 91,944.
To all "LU/L0) it may concern Be it known that I, EcBnR'r S. TrIoMAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nevada City, in the county of Nevada and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover- Holders and Stove-Lid Lifters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a combination cover holder and stove lid. lifter.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of cover holders and stove lid lifters and to provide a simple, strong and inexpensive device adapted for lifting stove lids and the covers of utensils without the hands of the person using the device coming in contact with such heated articles.
it-h these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accon'ipanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view partly in section, the handle being in section to show the manner of securing the strands to the same,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the outer engaging portion of the combination cover holder and stove lid lifter.
Like numerals of reference designate cor responding parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the combination cover holder and stove lid lifter comprises in its construction two pairs of strands of wire 1 and 2 which strands are twisted together to form a relative" stifl' shank or stem 3. In practice the two pairs of strands or wires are twisted together as shown but any other form of twist may of course be employed and each pair of strands is extended beyond the outer end of the stem. One pair of strands 1 has its extensions bent to form a substantially rectangular loop 4 which is provided with a straight transverse outer connecting portion 5. The outer portions of the sides of the loop 4 are arranged in substantial paral lelism while the inner portions diverge from the shank. The extensions of the wires of the pair of strands 2 form a pair of arms (3 of substantially the same shape as the sides of the loop -i and having inner diverging portions and outer substantially parallel portions. The arms 6 are arranged in spaced relation with the loop and the engaging portions are adapted to hold between them covers of cooking utensils and various other vessels to prevent the hands of the operator from coming in contact with such heated articles. Also the device is adapted to engage stove lids to enable the same to be readily lifted in placing them on and removing them from a stove hole.
The inner end of the shank or stem 3 is secured in an enlarged portion 7 of a bore or opening 8 of a handle 9 and one of the strands has an extension 10 passing entirely through the handle and bent exteriorly of the rear end thereof to form a loop or eye 11 which constitutes a. stop for securing the shank in the bore or opening of the handle and also a means for suspending the device from a nail or other support. By this construction, the device is rendered strong and durable and there is no liability of the handle, which is designed to be constructed of wood or other suitable material, becoming accidentally disconnected from the shank or stem.
What is claimed is 2- A combination cover holder and stove lid lifter including two pairs of wire strands twisted together to form a shank or stem, and having outer projecting engaging por tions, and a handle having a bore or opening enlarged to receive the inner portion of the stem or shank, one of the wires of the said stem or shank being extended inwardly or rearwardly entirely through the bore of V In testimony whereof I afiix my signature the handle and havlng a terminal exterlor 111 presence of two wltnesses.
loop or eye constitutin a stop and formin a hanger, theiend of the Wire being extend THOMAS.
3 ed inwardly i'n't6 the said bore zindthe latter Witnesses being slightly enlarged at the rear portion E. J. MORGAN, to receive the said end of the Wire. ELIZABETH OTHOMAS.
