Description

JOHN MILLER. Improvement In Cartridge Boxes. No. 125,069, 1 ParentedMarch 25,1872.

P |II witmm .Me-WY NNITEE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MILLER, OF UNITED STATES ARMY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGE-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,069, dated March 26, v1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Cartridge-Boxes, invented by JOHN MILLER, of the United States army, stationed at Lexington, in the `county of Fayette and State of Kentucky.
Figure lis a plan view, partly in section. Fig. is a transverse section; and Fig. 3, a longitudinal section.
The inventonwill be first fully described, and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
A represents the cartridge-box, having pret erably a `depth of about ve inches, a width of about two inches, and provided with two nonshrinking leather belts, B B. The latter (preferably) measure about one and three-fourths inch in width, by six in length. Each of these belts has ten loops, b, and each of these loops is calculated to receive a single cartridge ready for immediate use. C C are chambers, four in number, occupying the lower part of box A. These are preferably two and onehalf inches deep by three long, and are capable ot' containin g four packages having (each) tive cartridges. D is the pocket for the screwdriver, placed inside the box, and provided with a cap, which is buckled over the instrument. E is an intermediate space between the loops, to allow the convenient insertionof the fingers for reaching the single cartridges, and also for holding additional packages of cartridges uponan emergency.
By this construction of cartridgebox forty rounds can be ordinarily carried with convenience, while in case of necessity fifty might be secured within it. The greatest compactness and simplicity is thus obtained, while access to the single cartridges is easy to the soldier under all circumstances. The pocket for screw-driver being located within the box and not on the rea-r outside, as in the common cart ridge-box, entirely prevent-s that peculiar and noticeable noise made by soldiers when running, and particularly when in a wooded country.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a cartridgebox, provided with two series of loops, B B, with intermediatespace E, and apartments O C C C, as and for the purpose described.
