To all 'whom t may camera.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. STEINBAOH, a citizen of the United States, residi at Baltimore, in` the State of Maryland, ave
5 invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Coasters and -Rockers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates-to a oom-` bined coaster 'and rocker for children, and 10 the rimary object of the invention is to pro uce a device of this class which shall be simple in construction and easily and quickly converted from a wheeled toy into A a rockin gltoy f A. furt er object of the invention 1s to f produce a toy of this character' having wheels or rollers upon the ends of the legs thereof and rocker membersI hingedly sethe rollers, and whereby the said rockers in the latter position will serve as a rest for the feet of the operator of the to It is a still further object o the invention to produce a figure toy constructed Ito simulate the general outline of a horse andwhich f tosha maybe readily converted from a coaster to a rocker, or vice versa, the figure being pro- .vidd with audible means for lattracting attention thereto when in motion, to amuse the child as well as with a tail which is inuenced by a weight to impart an oscillatory movement thereto and serve as, a further attraction to the general construction.
It is a still further object of the invention rdduce a device of this character which be of a simple construction, cheap to manufacture, but thoroughly` eiclent 1n operation. o
` With the above and other obJects 1n v lew the improvement resides in the constructlon, combination and'arrangement of parts set forth in the following specication and fallin withinthe scope of the appended clalms.
n the rawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating' the improvement,
Fig. 2 is a-front elevation of the same,-
Fig. 3 is a similarvview butillustrating the rockers in their elevated position andlocked in such position Vto convert the same into -a foot rest,
. Fig. 4. is a front elevation of a .slight modification of the means for retainin the rockers in their elevated positions, an
Fig. 5 is adetail longitudinal sectional view upon .an enlarged scale, through the rear of theto v or platform of the toy and illustrating t e arrangement of the tail.l
thereon.
rEhe improvement has the general characteristics of that class of toys known as kiddie toys, comprising 'a main body or latform 1- which has its sides inturne to readily accommodate the legs of the child. Upon the platform 1 is centrally secured the neck ortion of the device, the said neck 2 beingormed with the head portion 3, and pivotally secured to either the neck or the underface of the head 3 isa bell 4. The .bell is-desirable inasmuchas it adds to the attraction .of a child using the toy and the device is provided with the usual reins 5 which are grasped by the childl to stead himself upon the body or seat 1. lf desired: and as illustrated in Fig. 1 ofthe drawings, the vcentralportion of the fiatv latform 1 may be provided with a sadd e and the sides of the saddle may project below the referred to central reduced portion of the body or Exten ing longitudinally upon the underface of the platform and secured thereto in any desired or preferred vmanner istJ cleat 6, the sides of said cleat bein beveled from the outer to the inner face o the cleat, and secured tothe said beveled sides of the cleat are the leg members 7' of the toy. The leg members are, of course, shaped to conform -to the general contour of the animal which the toy is designed to represent, and the ends of. each-of sald legs has pivotally arranged thereon rollernor wheel members 8-8.l
' The legs 7 comprise fiat members and have hingedl secured thereto, as at 9, upon their inner aces and adjacent their outr ends, the angular upper ends of the rocker length greater than the fdistance between the legs u on the sides of the toy, and the beveled e ges provided upon the said ends,v and indicated by the Lcharacters 11, are designed tocontact with the inner angular surfaces of the legs whereby to sustain the members 10 horizontal with respect to the toy, when the same are in their elevated position. The rockers 10 have their underfaces curved, and preferably the said rockers have their upper edges between the referred to beveled or inclined portions 11 utarcuately, as at 12.
The means for retaining the` rockers 10-10 in their lowered position, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, or in their elevatedlposition,l as indicated; in Fig. 3 of thedrawing, comprises a pair of links 13 and 14 respectively which are p-ivotally connected, as at 15, and which have their ends pivotally secured, as at 16, to oset members or lugs 17 provided upon the inner faces of the rockers 10. rlhe link'lll which? laps orisarranged adjacent the side of the link 13 for a considerable distance beyond the pivot 15 is formed with an odset member 18 that engages with the upper edge of the link 13 to hold both the links 13 and 14 in alinement either when the rockers are positioned belowv the rollers, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2; or
when the rockers are swung to a horizontal position asindicated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. 'Whenthe rockers a fe in their last mentioned position the joint between the links cannot .be broken unless the said links `are swung in an upward position, so it will be noted when the rockers are arranged horizontally they will aord a firm rest for the feet of the child operating the toy, and likewise when the links retain the 'rockers in their lowered position, the joint between the links cannot'be broken unless the said links are swung in an upward direction.`
The platform 1, centrally anfd at the rear thereof, has its underface grooved or' channeled, `as at 20, to receive a transverse pivotmember 21, around which is coiled an .eye
y2 2'formed upon a strand of wire 23 that'hae one of its ends weighted, as at 24, tle said wireA 23 normally being sustained .vertically withirespect tothe toy or at a right angle with respect tothe "body 1. rllhe wire, from Nitsreferred to coil or eye 21 is extended angularl with respect to the 'f referred to weightec portion, and to this angular end'.
is secured the tailpiece'25 which is ofa length suflicient to be projected through the,
channel or depression 20 and to be extended a' suitable distance beyond the rear of the toy.
or raise position isof a slightly diitierent lin Fig. 4 theidevice-is substantially simi- 'members 29 when the said rockers are vswung outwardly or 1n rocklng position. 'llo ar,
range the rockers 29 to the position illustrated by the dotted lines of the said ligure, the member 27 may be swung longitudinally and centrally of the body of the device, which permits of the rocker members being swung upwardly to a horizontal position to provide a foot rest, the said member 29'being then a ain turned to its initial position, transverse y between the horizontally disposed rockers to su port the same.
From the above escription, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, theimplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereofwill it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains withoutfurther `detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what Y ll claim is 1, A. toy of the class describedA including \legs, rollers upon the legs, rockers hingedly secured to the legs, and means carried by the toy co-'engaging between the rockers for retainmg the rockers longitudinallyagainst the legs and in spread position and for also supporting the rockers when swung horizontally between the legs to provide a foot support for the occupant of the toy.
,-2. ln acombined coaster'v and rocker, al
body, le members secured to and de ending angulfar y from the body, rollers pivotally secured to the legs, rocker members arranged longitudinallyv of the toy between the legs,
said rockers having their upper ends bevlill@ eled, hinge members secured to the beveled edges of the rocker' and connected with the legs, and'mechanism adapted to be disposed between the rockers to retain the same ina straddled condition and to, permit, ofthe said rockers being swung horizontally .be- I tween the legs to' cause the beveled-edges thereof to contact with tlie legs to convert the rockers into. a foot rest and to supportv the rockers in such position. l 'A 3. lin' acombined coaster and rocker a y guredesigned to represent a horse having' a bell, suspended from the neck thereof, a
tail .pivoted to the rear thereof, an angularly disposed weight forJthe tail, rollers upon the legs of the toy, rockers hingedly secured between the legs'thereof and adaptedy when 'l 1,250,045. y v 3 swung in one position to be depended ,-belo'w retain the same horizontally with respect to. the rollers, and mechanism arranged to enlthe toy between the legs thereof to convert gage between the rockers to forcethe-sam the said rockers into a. foot rest whenthe 1-0 into -eontaeting relation with the legs and rockers are swung between the legs'.h
` 5 for retaining the rockers thus spread when In testimony whereof I ax my signature.
the device is Aemployel as a rocker, and said t r f x means adaptedl to co-ct with the rockers toY f GEORGE P.. STEINBACH.
