To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known t v MORE, a citizen of the United States, residingat Chicago, in the county of Qook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-vestibule Diaphragms, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has for its provision of an improved iaphragm face plate adapted particularly for-use in. con,
, even enhanced while" permittin of a re accordion plaited belting.
duction in the total weight of t e car end diaphragm construction. far overbalancing theadded weight due to the use of the metallic diaphragm instead of the old form of The ordinary diaphragm face plate, in order to secure the necessary strength, is sewn-eighths inch or one inch in thickness and weighs in the neighborhood of 600 pounds, which weight, in addition to that I of the diaphragm proper, must be carried %y the reciprocatin spring pressed stems. he wear is consi erable and in a short time causes a sagging of the face plate and resultant speed disintegration of the diaphragm plaits especially at the upper cor- 11ers, necessitating blocking up or other unsatisfactory expedients.
3 The use of the metallic diaphragm, such as that of United States Patent No. 1,167,973, issued to Brown, has found favor with the railroads, but an objection urged against all metallic diaphragrns is the greater weight over dia hragms 0 the beltin type, which increase Weight added at bot-1 ends of the ear isto be avoided if possible.
In the attempt to overcome this objection I have sought to decrease the weight of the heavier part, 2'. e. the 'faceplate, without sacrifice of strength by utilizing structural features of the metallic diaphragm to reinforc-e a lighter face plate,,thus effecting a useful coiiperntion between the two parts of the dia hragm which results in the production 0 a metallic diaphragm materially lighter instead of heavier than the belting at I, EDWARD E. Wnrr special object the in service.
In order that the invention inay be readilyunderstood the same is ,scit forth in the accompanying drawing and in the detailed de- 'scription as embodied in a metallic diaphragm of the Brown type. It will be un ,dcrstood, however, that/the invention is not Patented 1)c.-11,"i191.7.
limited to diaphragms of this typeas the essential features thereof may be employed in. various embodiments.
In the drawing I Figure -1 is a side elevation of a our end diaphragm construction embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 2-2 of Fig. 1;, and. a v Figs. 3, 4, and 5 show in-il'cross section.
modified forms of face plates and connectionto the diaphragm sidelwalls.
As illustrated, thecar end plate is shown at 11 attached to the end post 12 and: carrying diaphragm side members 13 of inverted U-shape forming continuous side andtop is a transverse sectionon the line walls. The side and top Walls 13 have outwardly extending flanged 'portions'l l (:0 operating with similarly flanged portions 15 of-the side and top diaphragm members 16 whereby telescopic action of the members 13 and 1G is provided for, as will be readily understood. 'Rigidly connected with the diaphragm members 16 is a diaphragm face plate 17, carried by stems 18 and 19 spring pressed and mounted for longitudinal re- .ciprocation as is usual, Preferably, the face plate 17 is an integral continuous structure having the side portions 17 the bottom pornal line thereof, as indicated in-Fig. 2.
The rigid fixed connection. between the diaphragm face late l'f and the diaphragm side and top we 1 members 16 constitute of 'tions 17* and the top ortion's 17. The gengroper, the dia-- xedly 'oined to the diaphragm members 16 an efiective re inforcement for the face plate 17 thus enabling the latter to be formed of sheet meta su itabl stamped, pressed or rolled as distingui ed from the heavy face plate heretofore used. I
As an additional reinforcement the face plate 17 may be provided throughout its extent with marginal reinforcing ribs 20 upon either its inner or outer margins or both, these marginal reinforcing ribs supplementing the diaphragm members 16 which are, in a sense, also reinforcing ribs of the face plate 17. a
In Fig. 3 a form of construction is illustrated in which the' diaphragm membenlettered 16', is formed integral'with the face plate 17, the latter bein folded upon itself in a median plane and a vantageously joined by rivets 21.
In F ig. 4 the face plate 17 is shown 'as provided with a median reinforcing rib 22 to which the diaphragm member 16 is secured by rivet 23.
In Fig. 5 the face plate 17 is shown as rovided with both the integral median ri '22 and the marginal ribs or flanges 20, the diaphragm member 16 being jolned to the rib 22 by the rivets 23 as in ig. 4.
, e I claim:
. 1. In'a car vestibule construction, the comhination- Iwijth a sheet metal face plate havin formed integral therewith a lon itudi a rejpforcing' rib, and'metallie' dia'p ragm sidejgalls rigidly joined to said face plate and reinforcing said plate.
2. In a' car vestibule construction} the combination with a marginall metal face. plate, and metal icdiaphragm side members rigidly joined to said face plate and additionall 3. In a car vestibu e construction, the combination with a 'flieet metal face plate having continuous side, bottom and top portions with marginal reinforcin flflnges, and metallic diaphra 11 side an top, walls ri 'dly joined to the ace plate along'a media line thereof and additlonally reinforcing said face late. V 4. n a car vestibule construction the combination with a sheet metal face late provided with an integral longitudina re 1nforcing rib, and diaphragm side walls jolined to said face plate by means of' said r1 I 5. In a car vestibule construction, the combination with a sheet metal face plate having continuous side and top portions,
flanged sheet reinforcing" said plate.
and metallic diaphragm side and top walls rigidly joined to the face plate along a medial line thereof and reinforcing said plate, said. face plate also provided with marginal reinforcing ribs.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto si ned my name in the presence of two subscri ing witnesses.
