Application filed February 25, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that we, Josnri-r U. ltlrrcirnan, GUs'rAvn A. lln'Mrr, and (irons-n M. Brown, citizensof' the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Phila delphia and hit/ate of Pennsyliutnia, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a speciiication.
(lur invention relates to innnroveinents in garters, the object of theinvention being to provide a garter which is particularly intended for supporting niens socks, and which is provided with a sock engaging clasp connected to the free end of an inelastic tape. thelatter connected by elastic tapes with an inelastic leg encircling portion.
A further object is to provide a garter of the character stated which comfortable to the wearer, which securely holds the "sock or stocking, which is neat and attractive in appearance, which protects all metal parts from contact with the leg, and which will perform its functions for a much longer period of time than garters such as ordinarily manufactured.
l Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a view in front elevation illustrating our improved garter.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section illustrating the elastic tapes and the parts to which they are connected, and
Fig. 3 is a view in section on the line 33 of Fig. l.
1 represents an adjustable band which is adapted to be positioned around the leg, and which is made in two sections connected by any ordinary coupling device 2. One section of the band 1 is provided with an adjusting buckle 3, so that the band can be adjusted to lit various sizes of leg, and we would have it understood that we might employ any form of adjusting device for the purpose.
The band 1 is composed of a tubular tape of inelastic material, and in the ends of said band, elastic tapes 4 are secured. It will be noted that we employ a group of two of these elastic tapes t at each end of the band 53pecificatlon of Letters Patent.

1. These tapes, therefore, are relatively narrow, and whilethey are closetogether where they are attached totlie band 1, they preferablysprea d apart toward their opposite ends.
These elastic tapes %l are positioned at an angle, and at their converging ends are socured to a tape 5 of inelastic material. llhe tape 5 is folded around the ends of the tapes with a sock engaging clasp 7 which is pro- :teetedfrom the leg by the manner of folding the tape 5 around the same.
By having the tapes tnarrow and arranged in groups which spread apart from their points of attachment to the opposite ends of the band 1 to their points of attachment to the clasp-supporting tape 5, tension is placed on the clasp-su1 )porting tape at different angles and at different positions with in the length of the latter.
Each tape of each group applies a different tension upon the clasp-supporting tape, since the pull of the tapes of each group is applied at different angles. The result of the lifting pull upon the clasp-supporting tape of this construction has been found to be far superior to garters having only one wide strip connecting the clasp-supporting member with an end of the leg-encircling band or girdle and one reason for this advantage is that in a single wide elastic connection, a great part of the pull is transmit ted transversely to the direction in which the strip is elastic. 'lhus, by having the elas tic tapes constructed and arranged as above described in my invention, a desirable lifting action. is applied to the clasp-supporting tape and the direction of the tension is such as to comfortably hold the band around the leg.
While, of course, our invention is not limited to the particular clasp employed, we preferably employ a clasp such as illustrated with a locking bail 8 engaging over a hoolr 9 and operated by a finger lever lit).
in use, the inelastic band 1 extends around the leg of the wearer, and the elastic tapes l extend downwardly at an angle to the horizontal position of the band 1, so that the i11- clastic strip 5 which is positioned longitudinally of the leg constitutes a hanger supported by the elastic bands 4.
The elastic bands 4, therefore, perform the double function of binding the band 1 around the leg with sufficient pressure to hold the garter in place, and also provide an elastic connection between the band and the sock, so that the movement of the muscles of the leg is compensated for without undue binding or rubbing action.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from our invention, and hence We do not limit ourselves to the precise details set forth, but consider ourselves at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A garter including a band made of in elastic material for partially encircling the leg, a plurality of groups of elastic tapes, the tapes of each group being arranged side by side and extending downwardly at an angle from each end of said band, a clampsupporting tape consisting of a single strip of inelastic material having one end folded over the lower ends of the elastic tapes and stitched thereto, said elastic tapes forming the sole connection with the ends of the inelastic band, substantially as described.
2. A garter comprising a leg-encircling band, a clamp-supporting tape adapted to be positioned longitudinally oi the wearer's leg, a clasp supported by said tape, two gairs of elastic tapes each pair having its tapes arranged side by side and having their opposite ends secured to the clamp-supporting tape and to a respective end of the band, the tapes of each pair being spaced farther apart where they connect with the elaspsupporting tape than where they connect with the band, the pairs of elastic tapes tapering toward each other and intersecting the clasp-supporting tape at an incline, said n elastic tapes forming the sole connection between the ends of the band, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we ha Ye signed our names to this specification in the presence o I' two subscribing witnesses.
