Application filed November 20, 1916. Serial No. 132,264.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES FERNANDEZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seattle, inthe county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Checks,
This invention relates to improvements in door checks, and has for its principal object to provide a generally improved and novel form of door check, whereby a door may be checked and retained in a number of different positions without the necessity of a floor bolt. A further object is to provide cooperating means, one portion of which is secured'to the door frame, and another portion of which is secured to the door. Still a further object is to provide means attachable to a door and to a door frame, whereby when the door is swung upon its hinges its motion is set or retarded at a predetermined number of points in a circle swing. State-room doors on vessels and the like are difficult to retainin an open or semiopen position without some positive means of fastening, chiefly on account of the roll of the ship. My device'is intended for use in such cases and offers a semi-positive means for preventing the door from swinging upon either side of the predetermined point of setting thedoor.
Other objects will appear as my invention is more fully explained in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a modified form of my device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional elevation of same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, numeral 1 will designate the door which is hinged to the frame 2. A toothed rack 4. similar to rack 4, is secured to frame 2 and is concentric with respect to the door hinge line. Casing 5 is secured direct to the face of door 1 and is provided with upstanding lugs 22 one on either side of rack 4 A roller 23 is mounted within lugs 22 function of the roller is to keep the track in engagement with a pinion 24: which is mounted on a shaft 25 which in turn is The mounted in bearings 26 within the casing 5 Levers 27 are secured one to either end of shaft 25 and are set at a slight angle with respect to each other and with respect to a plane which passes through the center line of the shaft 25. Arms 28 are secured adjacent the ends of levers 27 and support the upper ends of springs 29 the lower ends of which are secured to bolts 30. Bolts 30 are adj ustably mounted in housing 5. In my device, the springs 29 tend to hold the levers 27 in the position as shown and act somewhat against each other in this position due to.
remain in thei normal position. The tension of the springs is suflicient to resist the ordinary tendency of the door to swing and it will require some little shove to move the door from normal position. It will be apparent that there is a normal or holding position for the door in every revolution of the pinion 24. I also provide a night latch 31 which is pivoted to casing 5 as at 32. The lower end of the night latch projects through a slot in the casing and may be operated bv'the hand from the inside of the door. When the night latch is shoved to the right the upper end engages the teeth of the pinion 24 and prevents the pinion from revolving, thereby preventing the door from being swung in either direction. The night latch is of particular advantage on steamers and the like where it is desired to leave the door slightly ajar but locked against entrance. 7
\Vhile l have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, 1 am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I therefore desire to avoid being limited to the exact claim.
Having described my invention, what it claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
In a device of the class described, the combination of of means for automatically checking a door at a plurality of predetersprings are elongated and therefore tend to mined positions, said means including a and tension springs one end of each of which toothed rack mounted upon the door frame is secured to the said levers whereby when concentrically with the hinge line of the the door is swung onits hlnges the movc- 10 door, a'pinionsfecuied to a shaft andrnoiintment of the levers will increase the tension 5 ed upon the door and engaging the said rack, of the springs which will tend to hold the levers secured to either end of the pinion door in normal position.
shaft and disposed sit an angle to each end Y CHARLES FERNANDEZ.
