IMPROVEMENT IN MUSIC-LEAF TURNERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,924, dated March 26, 1872.

SPECIFICATION. To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IV. VVEAVER, of Phcenixville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Turning Sheet-Music by the Feet; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a leaf-turner for pianos or other similar instruments, which device I call a pedal leaf-turner, as the leaves are to be turned by the feet of the performer, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention arugerta-ins to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view, and Fig. 2 a vertical cross section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a detail view.

A represents the book-support, on the lower edge of which at each end is pivoted a small hook, 13. These hooks are to be turned out, and the music, either sheet or book, is to be placed upon them, when they are turned back, which will elevate the music to a level with the arms that are to turn the leaves. They will also prevent the music from being displaced while the leaves are being turned. 0 0 represent the arms which are to turn the leaves, and are pivoted at their inner ends by one pivot to the lower edge in the center of the book-support A. The outer end of each arm (J is provided with an upward-extending projection, to, which is slotted longitudinally, as shown. The inner end of each arm 0 is made round and grooved circumferentially, and in said groove are secured to cords I) b, by means of wire pins, to prevent them from slipping. Each cord 1) passes to the back part of the instrument, and down the same, around pulleys d (l, and its lower end attached to a chain, 0.

This chain is attached to the upper end of a lever, D, hung or pivoted in the lower front part of the instrument in such a manner that its lower end will extend forward when in its natural position. The lower end of each lever D is on its front side provided with a button or knob, E, upon which the performer is to press the foot when desired to turn a leaf. The leaves to be turned are placed in the slots of the upright projections to a on the ends of the arms 0 (3, being held and supported by the same while being carried forward or backward by the arms. 0n the back part of the booksupport A is a guide, f, intended to keep the cords b I) in the grooves when operating the leaf-turner and when closing the instrument. The inside works of some instruments are fit ted up close to the back of the instrument, so that there is no place to take the cords down at the inside. In such cases the cords are taken through the back of the instrument and down on the outside, which method I have also represented in the drawing. (See Fig. 3.) The chains 0 0, attached to the cords I) b, serve to keep them stretched and in their places, and also serve the more readily to adjust the length of the cords. There are small washers placed above and below, and also between the arms 0 G to obviate friction. Any number of these arms may be used.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination with the arms 0 O and cords b b, I claim the guide f attached to the book-support A, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination of arms 0 O, cords b 1), guide f, pulleys d d, chains 0 e, and levers D D, all arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
