zen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of 01110, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vibrators, ofwhich thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to pneumatic vibrators or rapping devices such as are used in plate or bench molding to vibrate the bench plate or tub in separating the cope from the drag or pattern, which vibrators are intended to take the place of an assistant in striking the plate or benchwith a hammer, in order to loosen the sand.
The object ofthe' invention is to provide a simple and effectivevibrator whichshall be airtight and jarproof, which shall require no unnecessary pipe connections or pipe fittings, which the molde'r can operate while standing inhis natural position, and which shall embody the complete mechanism including theair; valve in a single casing adapted for ready attachment to the bench or tub. j

My vibrator is illustrated as attached to a molders hand plate 1 (Fig. 3), and also to 'a molders bench 2 (Figs. 4 and 5) in a modified form. In the vibrator to be described herein, the valve for the air line is built into the vibrator itself, thereby permitting in bench moldinga simple toot, knee or body prcsser device for controlling the air, and in plate molding permitting the vibrator to be employed as one of the handles of the plate, as will be described.

Thecylindrical portion of the casing is cored out lengthwise to form a cylindrical channel in which is mounted the pneumatic plunger 5 Off the ordinary construction, provided with'annular grooves 6. Ports 7 are formed in the cylinder to allow for the inlet and exhaust of the compressed air fromeach end of the plunger. In the older constructions above mentioned, in which the air valve is contained in a separate casing, it is necessary to have pipe connections between the air valve and the vibrator, which connections must necessarily be maintained airtight, andin the ordinary construction being separated from the vibrator proper, the air valve is very apt to get clogged up with dirt causing trouble in the operation of the device. H
By locating this air valve in the cylindrical casing inclosing the plunger, these diiiicultiesare obviated, as well as permitting the easy air control to be now described. y
The air valve chamber 13 is closed by the plug 14: which can be removed for the inserpressed air to operate the pneumatic hammolding, is a double bell crank lever 21, the
vertical arm of which has pivotal connection with the dovetailed sliding bar 22, which is located in a channel 22 in the-top of the vibrator cylinder. One of the horizontalarms of the bell crank is connected by a'connecting rod 23 with a foot treadle 24, pivoted in a bracket 25, secured to the bench. The depression of the foot treadle will rock the bell crank and cause the sliding bar to slide at itsfarther end over the top of the valve stem 11, which is arranged to extend out through the channel for the sliding bar. This will cause the valve to be depressed and the air to rush into the vibrator chamber.
The end of'the bar 22 is cut away at 26 to enforce an easy depression of the valve stem, and the other horizontal arm of the bell crank is acted upon by a' compression spring 27 to return the lever and slide bar .to normal position whenever released.
' Pivotally mountedin ears 28 on the base plate is the .curved plate 29. This plate is provided with an extension 30 at one of its pivots (Fig. 5), which bears against the under side of the spring-pressed end of the bell crank lever so that the operator, push ing with his knee or other part of his body against the plate 29, will also rock the bell crank lever to open the air valve.
By reason of my construction which mounts the controlling valve directly in the vibrator casing, I amable in this convenient way .to provide separate independent dev ces for opening the air valve,one to be operated by the foot and the other by the knee or some other portion of the body.
In platemoldingv there is, of course, no necessity for a foot or knee presser device. The plate is heldv in the hands of the operator in separating the mold or whenever vibration is desired. on the plate 1, shown, ,(Fig. 3) which has the usual hand holdsBl,

The hand vibrator will preferably be made smaller than the bench vibrator and its cylindrical casing can be I grasped by the operator and used in holding a stud or finger hold. As the operator grasps the cylinder with his palm over the sliding bar, he can easily use his thumb to push the bar into position to open or to close the air valve. Of course, in the hand hold vibrator, there will be no necessity for the bell crank lever 21 and its spring 27, so these parts will be omitted.
In this latter special use of my new vibrator, the great advantage of the selfcontained air valve as far as its opening the way for convenience of operation, is perhaps more apparent than in the use first mentioned. The non-clogging and non-leaking advantages are the same in both adaptations, as is self evident.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim .as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a molders vibrator, the combination with a casing, a vibrator therein, and air inlet therefor, a valve for the vibrator inelosed Within said-casing and having a stem, a sliding member on the casing, so mounted as to slide across the end of said valve stem to depress the same and to hold the valve depressed.
2. In a molders vibrator, a casing, a vibrator within the casing, an air valve in the casing, a mounting plate for the casing extending laterally therefrom, and means for mounting the same on a molders plate to constitute a handle therefor, and a sliding member on the casing for depressing the valve, located on the opposite side from the mounting plate and adapted to slide longitudinally of the casing to actuate the air valve.
