ROTATABLE BRUSH,
Specification oi'lLettei'is 'atent.
Patented. Dec.. 4, 191W..
Application led August 1, 191'?. Serial No. 183,898.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotatable Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in rotatable brushes, adapted for use in cleaning the teeth, while not necessarily restricted to this use.
An important object of the invention is to provide a brush of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, convenient in use, efficient in operation, and formed of parts which may be readily separated for the purpose of cleansing or replacement.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
ln the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of apparatus embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the same,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the handle of the device, parts being removed,
gig. 4 is a perspective view of a guard, an
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 1.
ln the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates the handle of the device, which is preferably milled. rThis handle is provided with a forward reduced cylindrical ortion 11, forming with the handle 10 a sioulder 12,. The reduced cylindrical extension 11 carries a forwardly extending member 13, which is square in cross-section, as shown.
Pivotally mounted upon the reduced cylindrical extension 11 is a relatively stationary holding sleeve or tube 14, provided with longtudinal corrugations or ribs 15, as shown.
A latch 16, preferably of the reciprocatory type, is disposed within a slot 17, in the forward end of the handle 1() and is adapted to be moved into a notch 18, formed in the rear end of the stationary sleeve 14, to lock the sleeve with the handle, when desired.
rlhe numeral 19 designates a rotatable brush, having a body portion 20 for the bristles. This body portion has an opening 21, which is square in cross-section and receives the member 13. The brush is detachably secured to the member 18 and this member serves to connect the brush with the handle l() for rotation therewith.
Disposed upon one side of the brush 19 is a guard 22, provided with an angular shank :23, carrying a resilient clamp 24, which is approximately U-shaped and adapted to straddle the stationary sleeve 14 and be held thereon by frictional engagement. It is obvious that the guard is detachably secured to the stationary sleeve 14.
ln the use of the device, the brush 19 is inserted in the mouth, while the guard 22 is arranged between the brush and the cheek, or other part of the mouth. The stationary sleeve 14 is held in one hand while the handle 10 is rotated by the other hand, causing a rotation of the brush 19, which effects an up and down cleaning of the teeth.
it is obvious that the brush 19 may be readily removed from the member 13 for cleansing the saine or for replacement and that the guard 22 is readily removable.
lt is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A brush of the character described, comprising a rotatable handle adapted to be turned upon its longitudinal axis and provided at one end with a longitudinally extending cylindrical extension which is provided at its free end with a longitudinally extending member formed polygonal in cross-Section, a relativelyl stationary sleeve handle cannot turn With relation to the having the cylindrical extension pivoted sleeve.
therein, a brush having a body portion pro- In testimony whereof I alix my signature vided With an opening polygonal in erossin presence of two Witnesses.

clamped to the relatively Stationary Sleeve, and means to look the relatively stationary sleeve to the rotatable handle so that the Witnesses:
