To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN B. DAUDELIN, citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, county of Bristol, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shuttles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand threading shuttles and particularly to a thread conductor and guard for the threading eye of such a shuttle to-prevent dethreading during its run.
The device of my present invention is especially designed for use where a hard drawn filling such as silk thread is being run through the shuttle, although of course it may be used with softer fillings.
The tendency of a hard drawn filling such as silk is to cut grooves in the friction surfaces of the usual metallic or wire threading eyes. This tendency is due to the fact that the hard unfleXing sliver exerts a greater friction on the parts than does a softer filling. Such filling is also difficult to draw in on account of its wiry na ture. That is, it does not run readily around corners and does not draw or creep as do soft fillings like cotton. It is therefore difficult to lead such filling through a tortuous channel.
In my present invention I have provided for a direct draw on the filling which causes it to lead past the deflecting points of the passage and to this end provide space so that it can be raised in threading in line with the highest parts of the threading passage.
The present invention contemplates a thread conductor of a construction and material which will not be liable to grooving by the hard drawn filling and which will effectively direct the filling into the eye and prevent improper escape thereof during the run of the shuttle. This-device is preferably made of porcelain or like material and is given a form best suited. to direct the thread into the conductor and prevent 1mproper escape therefrom.
The construction and operation of my device will be more fully disclosed in the specification that follows. In the drawings forming a part of that specification I have shown as anillustrative embodiment a form of guard which has proven'satisfactory in Specification of Letters Patent.

The shuttle body 1 may be of any construction having a bobbin chamber 2 in which is located a bobbin 3 on which is wound. a thread T. The forward end or throat of the bobbin chamber opens up into an eye iwhich extends across the shuttle asa substantially cylindrical bore. The threading slots 5 and 6 communicate with the eye 4. In the form shown the slot 5 is diagonally disposed with respect to the longitudinal axis of the shuttle and is so sawed as to develop a curve on the top face of the shuttle. The slot 6 connects the slot 5 with the eye a and preferably enters said eye at a point near its top.
The thread T is guided into the slot 5 and is prevented from escaping therefrom by a slot guide and guard member 7 of any desired construction.
Between the bobbin chamber and the de livery end of the eye a said eye is counter bored along its top-wall as shown (see Fig. i) to receive the thread conductor. In the form of my present invention the thread conductor consists of a bushing 9 driven into the eye 4 and substantially filling said eye. The bushing is preferably made of some smooth vitreous material as porcelain or the like. The bushing has a shouldered bore 10 extending from the delivery end thereof to an integral upright portion 11 disposed adjacent the entry of the bobbin chamber into the eye and providing a thread guiding and snubbing post. The shoulder of the bore is indicated by the numeral 10. Beyond the post 11 the bushing has a cleared portion or notch 11 (see Fig. 4:)
communicating with the bobbin chamber and providing a passage through which the thread from the bobbin chamber feeds to the bushing after the shuttle has been threaded.
The bushing is split along its top edge as indicated at 12. The slot 12 enters the bore 10 of the bushing and isco-extensive therewith. This leaves a wall on each side of the slot and extending from the delivery end of the bushing to the friction post 11. The delivery end of the bushing is flared out as best shown in Fig. 5 to provide a smooth surface past which the thread may run.
The wall 14 of the bushing adjacent the plane of entry of the slot 6 into the eye 4 is beveled ofl' slightly along its topedge to provide a deflecting portion 14 adapted to direct the thread from said slot 6 into the slot 12 of the bushing. Beyond the beveled portion 14 the Wall 14 extends as an edge 16 which is gradually sloped downwardly and r'eawardly to a point adjacent the post 11 whereby to expose the bore 10 of the bushing. This provides a lateral entrance open ingl? through which the thread enters into the bore of the bushing as it runs down the sloped edge 16 of the wall 14. The thread is therefore carried up to its point of highest effective travel before it is laid in the threading passage of the bushing. The opposite wall 15 of the bushing extends into the counter bore of the eye back to the post 11 as a vertical fin 18 effective to prevent turning movement of the bushing in the eye.
Overlying the slot 12 of the bushing is a guard device for preventing escape of the thread back into the slot 6 or escape by a direct upward movement. This device may be of any desired form. In the embodiment illustrated, and referring particularly to Fig. 6 it is shown as consisting of a simple notched plate 19 having a pair of spaced legs .20 adapted to be driven into suitable holes in the side wall of the shuttle whereby to properly position said plate relative to the slot of the bushing. The notch of the plate is indicated at 21.

The edge of the plate between the notch 21 and the leg 20 nearest to the threading slot 6 is preferably developed on a curve as indicated at 22. In threading the shuttle, the thread from the slot 6 is deflected by the portion 14 down along the gradually sloping edge 16 of the wall 14 and into the bore of the bushing, through the lateral opening 17 into said bore. The shuttle is now threaded. The thread then feeds direct from the bobbin chamber through the cleared portion 11, past the guide post which substantially bridges the space between the ports 11 and 17, and into the bore of the bushing Any tendency to escape by a direct upward movement is met by the shoulder 10 of the bore and if the thread twists upumrdly by this shoulder, it is prevented from escape by the plate 19 overlying said bore. The thread cannot therefore escape by any but its true path which is transversely out of the bush- Various modifications in the form and construction of my device may obviously be resorted to within the limits of the appended claims.
hat I therefore claim and desire to secure by-Letters Patent is:
1. A thread conductor for use in a shuttle having a bobbin chamber, a delivery eye, and a connecting threading slot, consisting of a member located. in said eye and extending across to the shuttle throat at right angles to the axis of the shuttle, said member having a thread passage including a portion disposed above the plane of entry of the threading slot into the eye and upon which the thread entering from said slot is adapted to be laid, and said portion beyond said entrance extending angularly downwardly toward the base of the member, and connecting with the shuttle throat to guide the thread back toward the bobbin chamber and a guide and snubbing post substantially bridging the space between the lower end of said downwardly extending portion and the thread exit end of the shuttle threat.
2. A thread conductor for use in a shuttle, consisting of a member havinga longitudinal thread passage and having transverse ports on opposite sides of said member, and a guide and snubbing post substantially bridging the space between said ports.
3. A thread conductor for use in a shuttle having a bobbin chamber, a delivery eye, and a threading slot connecting the throat of said chamber with said eye, consisting of a member located in said eye and having a longitudinal thread passage communicating with said slot and throat, and having transverse ports on opposite sides of said member, an integral guide and snubbing post arranged upon the wall of said thread conduetor adjacent the throat of the shuttle and substantially bridging the space between said ports.
4. A thread conductor for use in a shuttle having a bobbin chamber, a delivery eye, and
a threading slot connecting the throat of said chamber with said eye, consisting of a member located in said eye and having a longitudinal thread passage communicating with said slot and throat, and having transverse ports on opposite sides of said memher, and an integral guide and snubbing post arranged upon the Wall of said thread conductor adjacent the throat of the shuttle and substantially bridging the space between said ports, and means effectively disposed relative to said thread passage for preventing escape of the thread therefrom by a direct upward movement or by amovement back toward the threading slot of the shuttle.
5. A. thread conductor for use in a shuttle, consisting of a member having a downwardly and rearwardly inclined guiding portion and a pair of spaced thread ports, a post substantially bridging the space between said ports, and a guard member lodged in the shuttle body with its guard portion overlying the delivery end of the thread conductor.
6. In combination with the delivery eye of a shuttle and a thread conductor located therein, a thread barrier overlying the de livery end of said conductor, and having a portion effectively disposed to guide the thread into said conductor after it has reached its point of highest effective travel, and having a notch effectively disposed to prevent the escape of the thread by a direct upward movement.
7. In combination with a shuttle having a bobbin chamber, a delivery eye, and a threading slot connecting said chamber and eye, a thread conductor located in said eye and having a threading passage communicating with said bobbin chamber and threading slot, a thread guard overlying said threading passage for preventing escape of said thread therefrom said guard being up wardly notched to substantially the plane of the entry of the threading slot into said thread conductor.
8. In combination with a shuttle having a thread delivery eye and a threading passage, a thread guard overlying said eye, and having a notch effectively disposed above and to one side of the axis of said eye for preventing escape of the thread by a direct upward movement.
9. In combination with a shuttle having a bobbin chamber, a threading eye and a thread slot connecting said chamber with the delivery end of said eye, a thread conductor located in said eye and having a bore open along one face thereof, a wall of said thread conductor extending as a downwardly curved guiding portion terminating in a port opening into said bore near the bottom thereof, and a thread guard substantially bridging the space between said port and the shuttle throat and effective to direct the thread from the bobbin chamber into said opening after the thread has been laid in. said thread conductor.
10. In combination with a shuttle having a thread delivery eye, a thread guard having a portion effectively disposed to initially deflect the thread into said eye, and having a portion disposed above and to one side of the axis of said eye adapted to freely receive the thread from said deflecting portion and prevent its escape while allowing it limited upward movement in the direction of its threading travel, and means for attaching said member to said shuttle in overhanging relation to said eye.
11. A thread conductor having a bore slotted along its top edge, and an internal shoulder adjacent the entrance of the slot into said bore and adapted to initially oppose any tendency of the thread in said bore escaping by a direct upward movement, and a guard lodged in the shuttle and having a portion overlying said bore and adapted to oppose escape of the thread should it twist past said shoulder.
