HUSKING-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 4t, 191% Application filed September 25, 1916, Se ial No. 122,092. Renewed October 23, 1917. Serial No. 198,184.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn M. KozIoL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Herman, in the county of Washington and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Husking- Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to corn husking implements and more particularly that class of such devices adapted to be worn on the hand to assist in cutting and stripping the husk from the car during the husking operation and the invention has for its primary object to construct a device of the character set forth so as to provide means for cutting the husk and means placed adjacent said cutting means for stripping the husk from the ear.
A further object is the provision of the stripping hook with means whereby the same is automatically cleaned after each husking operation so that particles of the husk will not remain on the stripping hook and prevent the operation of the same.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as will from time to time hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the peculiar arrangement and combination of the various cooperating elements of a corn husking hook as hereinafter described and more particularly set forth in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention and in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts wherever used,
Figure 1 i a perspective view of the device' Fig. 2 is a rear View partly in section of the stripping parts and their support; and
Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view showing the parts in separated relation.
4 designates a member of any suitable flexible material formed to fit the hand and provided with a thumb hole 5 and buckles 6 and 7 adapted to receive straps 8 and 9 to hold the device in position upon the hand of the operator. Secured to the flexible portion 1 in such a position as to rest in the palm of the hand is a metallic member 10 formed at it upper end with a lug 11 and a cut out portion 12 adjacent to which is riveted to one leaf 13 of a hinge, the pintle 14 thereof lying in the cut out portion 12 and the other leaf 15 extending upwardly from the pintle and bent at 16 to form a flattened portion 16 and a stri ping hook 17 provided with an eye 17 anc having on the reverse side thereof a stirrup 18 engaged by the free end 19 of a leaf spring 20 which is riveted at 2121 to the rear of the plate 10 in order that the stripping hook may be allowed a slight movement about the pintle 14, such movement being governed by the spring 20. Upon the under side of the flattened portion 16' is riveted a leaf pring 22 the free end of which is adapted to bear against the inner face of a cleaning member 23 pivoted at 24 upon a pintle 25 extending through the eye 17'.
Adjacent the hook 17 is a knife blade 26' riveted at 27-28 to theplate 10 and provided with apertures 2930 and a cutting tip 31, the apertures 2930 being adapted to receive rivets or similar fastening means 3132 which removably upport upon the knife 28 a member 34 having an angular projection 35 provided with a cutting edge 36.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The hook is placed upon the hand of the operator in such manner as to bring the plate 10 in the palm thereof and the thumb in the opening 5 and the straps 8 and 9 adjusted. When in this position, the cutting edge 36 or the cutting edge 31 as is most convenient to the operator, may be utilized to slip the husk on the ear when it i engaged by the hook 17 and stripped therefrom. The member 25 moving inwardly during the husking operation and moving outwardly when pressure is released at the finish of the husking operation thus forces all hreds of the husk out from under the hook 17 and efiectually cleans the same to prevent clogging thereof.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I there: fore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form shown and described.
What I claim as new is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a flexible member adapted to fit the hand, of a plate secured thereto, the upper part of said plate being bent back upon itself to form a husking hook, a cleaning member carried Within said bent back portion, and spring means acting between the inner part of said bent back portion and aid cleaning member for.
normally holding said member at the for- Ward portion of the hook. 2. In a device 01 the character described,
' the combination with a flexible member I Gopies of this patent may be obtained for ally mounted on said plate in the opening between the body portion of the plate and the bent back end at the entrant end of the opening and spring means coacting with said cleaning member adapted to normally urge the same toward the forward portion of the hook to keep the same clean.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
