2 SMEETS-SHEET 24 @Nl lil @Tlll PATENT THOMAS LARSON, O'F BRICELYN, MINNESOTA.
WAGON-RACK.
Application filed May 24, 1916.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS LAnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bricelyn, in the county of Faribault and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vlagon- Racks; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in wagon racks especially adapted for use in hauling hay and grain; and, to this end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure l is a. front elevation of the i1nproved wagon rack;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, some parts being broken away; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the posts.
rlhe numeral 1 indicates a pair of laterally spaced longitudinally extended sills adapted to rest on the wagon holsters between the end stake, not shown. Rigidly secured to and resting upon the tops of the sills 1 is a plurality of laterally spaced cross sills 2, as shown, four in number. iioor 3, made up of a multiplicity of boards placed close together, is nailed or otherwise rigidly secured to the cross sills 2. Obviously, the sills 1 and 2 and floor 3 constitute the platform for the improved rack.
Four corner posts 4f and four intermediate posts 5 are rigidly secured to the cross sills 2. The corner posts 4 are secured to the end portions of the two end sills 2 and the intermediate posts 5 are secured to the end portions of the two intermediate sills 2. The posts t and 5 are constructed from coinmercial angle bars and they are bent so as to curve outwardly and upwardly transversely of the rack. One of the flanges of each post 4 and 5, at its lower end portion, is placed with its outer face in flat engagement with Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2?, 191% Serial No. 99,531.
the upper edge portion of the sill 2 to which it is secured and the other flanges of said posts are bent or folded onto the lower flanges, as best shown in Fig. 3.
Bolts 6 are provided for rigidly securing the posts el and 5 to the sills 2. It is also important to note that the two outer boards of the floor 3 are laid on top of the folded flanges of the posts 4C and 5 and are secured in position by the bolts 6. rlhe posts 4 and 5 are identical, one with the other, with the exception that they are made in rights and lefts, so that the flanges of the four corner posts il project toward each other, both at the ends and sides of the rack. Edgewise spaced front and rear boards 7 are bolted to the `end flanges of the end posts 4 and edgewise spaced boards 8 are bolted to the side flanges of the end posts l, as well as the outer flanges of the intermediate posts 5. rlhe end posts 4.-, on each side of the rack are connected by a re-inforcing wire 9 anchored to said posts by eye-bolts 10. These re-inforcing wires 9 extend through perforations formed in the inwardly projecting posts 5. The rack is provided with the customary front end ladder 12.
The outwardly curved posts 4 and 5 give the rack a large holding capacity and as they are made in duplicate rights and lefts, it makes it an extremely simple matter to construct a rack in accordance with my invention. As the end and side boards 7 and S are bolted to the posts l and 5, it is very easy to replace one of the boards in case the same is broken. It is also evident that the rack is very light and strong and at the same time of comparatively small cost to manufacture.
l/Vhat l claim is:
1. A wagon rack comprising a platform including cross sills and a licor supported thereon, corner and intermediate posts having their lower end portions bent laterally inward, tapered and inserted between the floor and cross sills to lift the outer longitudinal edge portions of said floor, and means securing the posts and floor to the cross sills.
2. A wagon rack comprising a platform including cross sills and a floor supported thereon, corner and intermediate posts formed from angle bars that extend upof said floor, and `nueans securing the posts Warolly and outwardly transversely of the and floor to the cross sills. l0 rack, the vertical flanges of the posts, at In testimony whereof I affix my signature their lower end portions, being folded obin presence of two witnesses;
5 liquely onto the horizontal flanges thereof THOMES LARSON.
and said lower end portions of the posts be- Witnesses: ing inserted between the Hoor and cross sill O. O. STAGEBERG, to lift the outer longitudinal edge portions J. R. LEE.
